Human metapneumovirus, or hMPV for short, has been making headlines lately, especially as reports of rising cases emerge from China. Chinese health authorities first raised the alarm about hMPV back in 2023, and already it's spinning its way into conversation in households across Asia—mostly revolving around the sniffles and coughs that many are no doubt trying to shake off. While it may sound like a name straight out of a sci-fi novel, hMPV is actually a virus that shares similarities with those that cause the flu, and has been around since its isolation in 2001—making it a not so new player on the block.
