The new trailer for the film shows Miles Morales in a pickle — stuck between being a good kid and a good Spider-Man, two things that don’t necessarily align.

The Second "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" Trailer Pits ... (Motion Picture Association)

The official trailer for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" reveals teenage Miles Morales will be facing an army of Spider-People.

Across the Spider-Verse is the second in the planned trilogy, with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse set for a March 29, 2024 release. For Miles, this is put in the starkest terms when he’s tested by deciding between saving one person or saving everyone across all universes. Parker (Jake Johnson), who now has a baby, and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), who Miles deeply cares for. Miguel has a set of moral and ethical rules that he believes every Spider-Person must follow, and he’s not sure Miles is up for it. We learned that in the first film in the planned-for trilogy, the Oscar-winning 2018 smash hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and now in the second film, we’ll be meeting an even larger universe of Spider-People. Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) might be Brooklyn’s “one and only” Spider-Man, as he says at the top of the second trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, but he’s not the only Spider-Man in the universe.

But as the multiverse ramps up, and To make sense of its many multiverses, Marvel Comics began ordering them with number designations in the 1980s, claiming “Earth-616” for the main setting. But by referring to the MCU’s setting as “Earth-199999,” Miguel has thrown down a gauntlet of technically epic proportions. Miguel O’Hara, the Spider-Man of 2099, tosses off a casual line about how annoying Doctor Strange and “the little nerd back on Earth-199999” were.

Also, did you spot another of spidey’s villains in the trailer? This could be a hint that they go into Stacy’s and how she lost her Spider-Man. Maybe I missed it. This got me feeling pretty content because, in the first movie, Parker had broken up with his wife. As you know, in the comics, Stacy first appeared in “The Amazing Spiderman” and on-screen with Garfield. It seemed to have solved a problem in the first movie where they were all unable to exist outside of their dimension and were glitching. One was how O'Hara has a band on his wrist (he calls it a “goober” at the end of the first movie) and it glows in an orangey-gold colour. First, O'Hara was angry at Doctor Strange and a “little nerd” on earth 19,999 — a reference to the multiverse crumpling in “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. In one scene, orangey-gold power (or whatever it is) kind of bursts out from O'Hara and spreads across a room like a virus — which made me think it is the reason why they are so stable in this universe. What she seemed to be referring to is “The Lobby”, which appears to be the earth or a space where hundreds of spider-people co-exist. And of course Spot, the supervillain, who appeared for a second — could it be that he isn’t the main antagonist in the film? But after one and a half hours of kicking butt, he found the courage to reconcile with her and it seemed to have gone well.

Miles and Miguel are both drawn into the fight to stop the Inheritors and save the mystical Web of Life and Destiny. The fact that Miguel refers to the older Earth-199999 designation may be Sony’s way of getting around Marvel’s reluctance to connect the MCU to this animated franchise. And that may be at the heart of their fight in Across the Spider-Verse. The question is whether Miles will have his Uncle Ben moment in the new movie.
