The first Blue Beetle trailer has arrived giving us our first official look at the highly-anticipated DC film releasing this August.

He has also had one other brush with a live-action incarnation appearing in an episode of the tenth season of Smallville. The second version was a Charlton Comics character that was eventually purchased by DC Comics and served as the inspiration for the Nite Owl character in the Watchmen series. The “Blue Beetle” trailer released today, providing a glimpse into the world of the bug-legged superhero. Set to hit theaters on August 18.

“One of the things that we really wanted to do with the cast was to be able to be as authentic as we can. It is a superhero movie that happens to have a Latino at the forefront. “If you'll help us and this movie becomes a massive fucking hit, we're going to see a lot of those [characters]. We wanted to see the first immigrant family,” Soto explained. Jaime chooses to use his newfound abilities to protect Palmera City as the superhero Blue Beetle. As seen in the new trailer, the Scarab chooses Jaime to be its host, fusing itself to his spine while also bestowing him with a suit of blue armor capable of all sorts of incredible powers.

The DC movie stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, a teenager who gains superpowers when an alien Blue Beetle scarab grafts onto him, forming a powerful exoskeleton around his body. This was originally a creation for the DCEU, but DC's new studio leader James Gunn has said the film would be "disconnected" from previous DCEU entries and could be made a part of the new franchise.

From the trailer however it's clear that the movie was filmed in English, though it's possible that they filmed [two versions in the vein of Prey](https://collider.com/how-to-watch-prey-in-comanche-dub-predator-prequel-hulu/). Marquezine’s character has not appeared in the comics that we know of; and Sarandon’s Victoria Kord is also a character created for the film, though her name indicates she has ties to the comic book character Ted Kord, who is a brilliant scientist and sometimes-member of the Justice League. While this summer’s [The Flash](https://collider.com/tag/the-flash-movie/) movie is set to serve as a reboot point for the universe, DC still has a few other formerly DCEU titles set to [hit the big screen before the end of the year](https://collider.com/blue-beetle-movie-theatrical-release-date/) including Blue Beetle, which just received its first trailer today. We don’t yet know if Sarandon’s Victoria is a gender-swapped version of the character or if she’s connected to the Kord legacy in some other way—though the trailer may just tease the answer to that question. “It’s some kind of world-destroying weapon,” a more knowledgable voice says in the trailer. The beetle has a name and it’s Scarab. His skin morphs into an exoskeleton reminiscent of a standard-issue supersuit, he grows bug-like appendages on his back, and a threat-detecting computer capable of slicing a bus in half now lives in his brain.

Jaime Reyes is here to bring a new hero to the DC Universe, but his new movie trailer also has some interesting connections to Blue Beetle's comics past.

The trailer ends with a brief look at what appears to be the inside of Jaime’s eventual base of operations—seemingly taken over from somewhere inside Kord Industries, given that we see the costumes of the two prior Blue Beetles in the background for a moment. Early on in Jamie’s story, and seemingly in the movie as well, the Scarab often manifests the suit of its own volition, and it takes Jaime a while to actually control his newfound abilities. Given the shadow Kord Industries casts over this whole trailer, it’s no surprise that we’re seeing a lot of Ted’s time as the Blue Beetle even if Ted himself is not the star of the show in this movie. Inside the Big Belly Burger box is in fact not a Big Belly Burger—but the alien scarab that bonds with Jaime’s spine, transforming him into the Blue Beetle. Jaime is given a mysterious package to safeguard with his life in an innocuous hamburger box—which in and of itself is a DC Comics reference. While in most of its history Ted has directly led Kord Industries himself, most recently in the comics, and in the Blue Beetle movie, it’s managed by his sister, Victoria.
