David Moyes exclusive: West Ham boss admits their big summer ... (Sky Sports)

West Ham manager David Moyes speaks exclusively to Sky Sports; watch West Ham vs Southampton on Sunday, live on Sky Sports Main Event from 1pm; kick-off 2pm ...

"We're in Europe going into April after starting with a qualifier [in August]" he says. Then West Ham's attentions turn to a Europa Conference League quarter-final against Gent. It has certainly been a welcome distraction for Moyes. They can't all be running forward so it's part of the job. "We wanted to involve him in getting forward quicker, more often. But ultimately that's the next stage, we've got to try and get that, we've got to get them all blended in." "Well, I hope that is the case," he says. "Maybe we don't have Craig Dawson," says Moyes when quizzed about their set-piece woes. It really is a so-called 'six-pointer'. "In the summer, we brought in two Italian internationals [Scamacca and Emerson Palmieri]. "Are we playing as well as a team this year? Only Chelsea and Manchester United spent more in Europe.

Being a West Ham striker is a lonely job (The Athletic)

West Ham are still working out how to get the best out of their strikers - a puzzle they've been unable to solve for a long time.

[Manchester United](https://theathletic.com/football/team/manchester-united/) in the fifth round of the [FA Cup](https://theathletic.com/football/fa-cup/). [Che Adams](https://theathletic.com/football/player/che-adams-eKixL18t2ZucyRig/). Following the unconvincing performance against Southampton and with games coming up against Newcastle United and [Fulham](https://theathletic.com/football/team/fulham/), it may be something Moyes reconsiders. It was [Ollie Watkins](https://theathletic.com/football/player/ollie-watkins-9nwANNnY4TGed61H/) at Aston Villa. [The £12million January signing](https://theathletic.com/4109976/2023/01/20/west-ham-danny-ings-aston-villa-transfer/) was substituted for [Michail Antonio](https://theathletic.com/football/player/michail-antonio-pbOhCPjeJMKGuNIK/) after 65 minutes in [West Ham](https://theathletic.com/football/team/west-ham-united/)’s 1-0 victory against [Southampton](https://theathletic.com/football/team/southampton/). “So we will try to pick and choose the games that we think it will work with him. “There are other parts of games where we may need a different type of striker, where we are playing more on the counter-attack and it may not suit Ings quite as much,” said Moyes. Before late goals from [Alejandro Garnacho](https://theathletic.com/football/player/alejandro-garnacho-Jagcqdt6eTZsDPIM/) and [Fred](https://theathletic.com/football/player/fred-SH3uaPEfAVNkJbik/), Moyes’ side impressed in a 4-3-3. The options he had before signing Ings were [Gianluca Scamacca, who joined in July from Sassuolo for £30.5million](https://theathletic.com/3447074/2022/07/26/gianluca-scamacca-west-ham/) but has struggled with form and fitness and was not named in the matchday squad against Southampton due to a sore knee; and Michail Antonio, who has scored three goals in 24 league appearances and is prone to being a profligate finisher. We’re not playing at our best and the Nottingham Forest game showed that if we can get him in the box and give him opportunities, he will score. He played in a 4-4-2 system at Southampton and his strike partner was He is often isolated and his low number of touches against Southampton wasn’t an isolated incident.

Nayef Aguerd gives West Ham vital win over Southampton to lift ... (The Guardian)

The difference was that West Ham just looked a little bit cannier than Southampton in the areas that mattered. It was a dreadful game, high on tension and ...

The game was in the balance. A slick move opened West Ham up on the left and a goal looked certain when Romain Perraud aimed for the far corner. But the impression that Moyes’s tactics are choking this side’s creativity faded when West Ham went ahead with a simple goal in the 25th minute. It was a dreadful game, high on tension and low on quality, but it was not a surprise that the points belonged to the more robust side. That miss aside, though, this was a performance that underlined why Southampton are likely to be in the Championship next season. West Ham, who needed the VAR to confirm that Nayef Aguerd’s winning goal was onside, had not impressed.

West Ham United beat Southampton 1-0 to move out of the Premier League's bottom three and leave Saints in huge trouble.

Fabianski was beaten but the shot was off target. He shoots through the sea of legs and Fabianski reacts late, but saves well. This was yet another demonstration of what everyone already knew, West Ham are far too good to be relegated from the Premier League. Victory takes West Ham up to 14th, and leaves Southampton bottom. Subs: Fornals N/A, Antonio 6, Downes N/A He easily outshone midfield partners Tomas Soucek and Declan Rice.

In particular, his flick to free Thilo Kehrer and work his team out of a difficult area showed his quality, although Paquetá clearly is just as good without the ball as he was with it. He was also ranked first in 'duels won' and 'ball recoveries', while also providing a few moments of magic on the ball, too. In fact, his ten tackles were double the amount posted by any other player at London Stadium. As he wheeled away in jubilation, you could see what it meant too. Classy, as always, then. Aguerd also impressed with 88 per cent passing completion.

Nayef Aguerd and Lucas Paqueta shine against Southampton to ensure success in another crucial six-pointer.

That’s why we bought him here,” Moyes joked, having seen the playmaker make 10 tackles, the most by a West Ham player in a League game for more than a decade. “When you are not in a great position, performances are really important, but the most important [thing] is the result.” Eight summer signings — nine with Danny Ings’s January addition — are still yet to gel, but of those buys Aguerd stands out a mile as the only unqualified success.

West Ham vs Newcastle Picks and Predictions: Newcastle Snag ... (Covers.com)

English Premier League prediction, odds, and betting tips for West Ham vs Newcastle on April 5. EPL free pick and game analysis.

We know that West Ham have struggled with goals but on the flip side of that they generally are pretty solid defensively. Don’t miss our West Ham vs Newcastle Newcastle also end up in several low-scoring games, mostly down to that great backline and they have seen Under 2.5 goals in 53.8% of their games away from home this season. They come into this in good form and have allowed just ten goals on the road this season, which is seriously concerning for West Ham. Joe Willock took a knock against Man United but he’ll probably start in the Newcastle midfield alongside Sean Longstaff and the club's best player in Bruno Guimaraes. That bodes very well against West Ham who have scored just 25 goals in 27 games this season. You’re getting huge value on a great Newcastle team with odds of +115. Nobody in the Premier League has conceded fewer goals than Newcastle with just 19 allowed in 27 games. This is a Newcastle team who have bounced back after the disappointment of losing the Carabao Cup final. We have bonus Premier League action this week and West Ham vs. This is a Newcastle team who have been playing at such a high level lately: they comprehensively beat Manchester United, a performance that showed their class. Whether European action has distracted the Hammers is a question worth asking but David Moyes' team hasn’t been at the level of recent seasons, in which they perhaps overperformed.
