Why Leicester sacked Brendan Rodgers – player unrest, split ... (The Athletic)

Brendan Rodgers leaves Leicester second bottom of the Premier League - it has been quite the fall from grace for club and manager.

Rodgers has had a huge impact on his career, but doubts were starting to creep into the minds of others, even the more experienced like [Jamie Vardy](https://theathletic.com/football/player/jamie-vardy-g0VlEJLKbKMFIJfm/), who has been marginalised in recent weeks. [Youri Tielemans](https://theathletic.com/football/player/youri-tielemans-kg3LT74rQm8GKLmC/), who refused to sign a new contract, was not the only one who felt he had achieved as much as he could at Leicester. [Kasper Schmeichel](https://theathletic.com/football/player/kasper-schmeichel-CC7fIKroWIbjUPtt/) was thinking of his own future. Soumare and [Dennis Praet](https://theathletic.com/football/player/dennis-praet-U3vXtLbD8PJjcwFA/) were seemingly on their way out, too, while patience had worn thin with [Ayoze Perez](https://theathletic.com/football/player/ayoze-perez-S9xnzQLm7XmiRQGT/). They conceded stoppage-time goals against [West Ham United](https://theathletic.com/football/team/west-ham-united/), [Newcastle United](https://theathletic.com/football/team/newcastle-united/) and [Everton](https://theathletic.com/football/team/everton/). He said it was a mutual decision with Schmeichel and Ward, but Schmeichel was unhappy his run of 149 consecutive league games had come to an end. [Crystal Palace](https://theathletic.com/football/team/crystal-palace/) was the catalyst. [Wesley Fofana](https://theathletic.com/football/player/wesley-fofana-B3xBiMo59OK63V81/)’s injury, but the centre-back had by now been discarded and continues to be out in the cold. [Nottingham Forest](https://theathletic.com/football/team/nottingham-forest/) in February last year. Around the time of the Forest defeat, Rodgers began to talk about refreshing his squad and how the natural cycle of the group he inherited had come to an end. It was not just to add more quality to his squad, or more hunger and competition — “competition is a great coach for a player” — but to bring in fresh ears. While there was a lot of sadness when he was told, there was conviction that it was the right call.

Leicester’s supporters have largely welcomed the end of Rodgers’s longest spell as a manager. Sadler was hired as a tactical analyst under Nigel Pearson in 2014 and is a highly regarded coach, while Stowell is embarking on a sixth stint as caretaker having been in charge after the sackings of Martin Allen, Paulo Sousa, Sven‑Göran Eriksson, Claudio Ranieri and Puel. Leicester have sold four players – Harry Maguire, Fofana, Riyad Mahrez and Ben Chilwell – for more than £50m in that time and are hoping for a similar fee for James Maddison from Newcastle or other suitors this summer, even though the England player has only one year on his contract. Last month, however, Leicester posted pre-tax losses of £92.5m for the year to 31 May 2022 – an increase of £61.3m on the previous season – despite reaching the Europa Conference semi-finals and finishing eighth.

“We have the highest degree of respect for Graham as a coach and as a person. In news that will come as no surprise to anyone, a young German with a penchant for wearing controversial trousers and Mauricio Pochettino are both believed to figure prominently on their wish list, while another trip to the seaside to bundle Roberto De Zerbi and his backroom staff into the back of a van has not been ruled out either. On the plus side: Scott Parker, Bruno Lage, Steven Gerrard, Ralph Hasenhüttl, Frank Lampard, Jesse Marsch, Nathan Jones, Patrick Vieira, Antonio Conte and now Brendan Rodgers are all available. “I can imagine the scenes. The club and its manager had parted by “mutual consent”, we were told in news that would normally prompt a lame, monotonously predictable gag about the decision being far more mutual on the club’s part than it was on Brendan’s. “On behalf of everyone at the club, we want to thank Graham sincerely for his contribution to Chelsea,” droned a club statement.
