KAHN: He says Lula should use his international prestige as a defender of the environment and to get China to help fund preservation. This text may not be in its final form and may be updated or revised in the future. Thiago de Aragao, an international business consultant in Brasilia and Washington, D.C., says the idea of Lula as a peace broker is ridiculous. KAHN: Gomez's family-owned beef and pork business sends 40% of their exports to China. KAHN: Lula is also proposing being a mediator in the Ukraine War. That is at least the hope of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who pledges to try to reverse his predecessor's isolationist policies. The U.S. And as NPR South America correspondent Carrie Kahn reports, Lula is headed to China, and that makes some in the West nervous. Lula pushed his trip back a day after catching a mild pneumonia on Thursday, but the two leaders do plan to meet on Tuesday in Beijing. There are dozens of other countries that have more conditions to do that. His refusal to strongly condemn Russia's invasion or sell ammunition to Ukraine irks the West, and so does his upcoming trip to China. Oliver Stuenkel, an international relations professor at Brazil's FGV University, says Lula is just following Foreign Policy 101.

Morocco loss no disaster for Brazil team in holding pattern (ESPN)

Brazil may have slumped to their second-ever defeat to an African side but, for a team without a permanent coach, there were positives to be taken.

Brazil enjoyed the best of the first half hour, especially with occasional quick combinations of [Vinicius Junior](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/252107/Vinícius-Júnior), [Rodrygo](http://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/267804/Rodrygo) and [Lucas Paqueta](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/234715/Lucas-Paquetá). Teenage midfielder [Andrey Santos](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/314858/Andrey-Santos) was not overawed on debut, nor, as we have seen, was Rony. [Emerson Royal](http://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/246844/Emerson-Royal) were exposed. [Eder Militao](https://www.espn.com.au/soccer/player/_/id/228402/eder-militao) gave a sound performance in his first game as Brazil's senior centre-back. [Yassine Bounou](http://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/175149/Yassine-Bounou) into a gibbering wreck. [Palmeiras](/soccer/club/_/id/2029/palmeiras) coach Abel Ferreira from an erratic winger to a versatile figure capable of operating wide, in the penalty area or work back down the flanks. The shooting position did not look great, and neither was the shot, but it squirmed through Bounou and over the line. Just over three months later they went down 2-1 to [Morocco](/soccer/team?id=2869) in Tangiers -- a [2-1](/soccer/report/_/gameId/665817) debut win for the Moroccans over Brazil and a wonderful way for the Atlas Lions to enjoy the party they were hosting to celebrate reaching the semifinals in Qatar. Brazil were worth their equaliser some 25 minutes from time, even if it needed some collaboration from the Morocco keeper. The best of their team is the quick little exchanges they play from the flanks, and one such move broke the deadlock. While they wait for the next coach to step in (with [Real Madrid](/soccer/team?id=86) boss Carlo Ancelotti on top of the wishlist), Under-20 manager Ramon Meneses was in charge, almost certainly for this game only. If Morocco were at full strength, Brazil hardly have the means at the moment to define full strength; they are in a strange phase.

China is globally competitive in wind, solar energy, and new-energy vehicle (NEV) technology, areas in which experts said both sides can further cooperate. BRICS countries have become an important source of investment in Brazil, led by investment from China. The China-Brazil investment cooperation has a solid foundation. “The signing of the agreement will further promote a series of priority cooperation plans and follow-up actions in key areas of cooperation, while further leveraging its potential in the economic and trade fields between the two countries,” Wang said. Moreover, Brazil has been China’s biggest destination country for investment in Latin America for many years, with infrastructure being key. The magnitude of such a business delegation is historic and could be taken as an indication of more deals to be discussed in diverse fields of cooperation, not just in trade but also investment and other areas where the two countries are highly complementary and are mutually beneficial, experts said.
