Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga review: Yami Gautam steals the show (Hindustan Times)

The benchmark that Sonam Kapoor-starrer Neerja set for a hijack drama is too high to be matched, and that's why whenever I watch a hijack-hostage film, I can't ...

I really wish makers had kept more of him in the film, especially when he is questioning all the passengers and staff after the hijack is over. With a lot of layers and shades to her character, she's confident and carries a swag which is hard to miss. Gianni Giannelli's cinematography is intense and the mid-air shots of the plane both from outside and inside add to the chaos. Nevertheless, I liked how Singh captures the tension in the plane when passengers are in a state of panic though at some places, hijackers appear to be a bit undertrained for the job and end up looking messy. Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga starring Yami Gautam and Sunny Kaushal is no different and yes, you end up comparing it with Neerja in terms of the technicalities, the way hijackers behave and understanding their motive to be able to decode the plot. There are some easy giveaways when things seem pretty predictable but when the actual story unfolds, you are taken by surprise and thankfully it's not a case of too little too late.

OTT Review: Yami Gautam's Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga - Hindi film on ... (123Telugu.com)

Yet another film of actress Yami Gautam named Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga has taken the direct OTT route. The movie, directed by Ajay Singh, has Sunny Kaushal in ...

On the whole, Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga is a heist-hijack thriller that has a good premise but an underwhelming finish. The concept was fascinating, and the movie could have been a great thriller if not for the issues in writing. But one gets disappointed with the mid and final portions after a promising start. The movie is wrapped up just in 100 minutes. The way the hijack is showcased lacks conviction and sounds silly. Hence it is important that the makers need to be more careful to outsmart the viewers and can’t go wrong even with one scene, especially for a thriller. With no option left, Neha and Ankit decide to do the robbery on a plane that is carrying the diamonds. This is where the movie takes a nosedive. The basic premise of the film is pretty exciting. The movie has a few interesting moments. Ankit is asked to do a diamond robbery to repay the debt. Till the time the hijack happens, the movie moves on an interesting note, but later it turns out to be disappointing.

And the moment it reveals its cards, with alert viewers seeing it come, it loses zing. Gautam is having quite a time with all kinds of films: we last saw her in ‘Lost’, in which she plays an investigative journalist; here she is a comely flight attendant who knows more than she lets on. Goons and guns.

If you ask us whether you should watch “Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga,” we would say that adding the “Jaaniye” song to your playlist is enough, and maybe getting the deets on Neha’s red dress. That is what we felt about the first half though the wrap-up of the second half was enough to explain it all away without us having to rewind anything. Is that the only way we are capable of seeing why we should support her actions? Also, we understand a coincidental second meeting, but if the guy is waiting outside the club’s bathroom and it is your third meeting that day, it is not fate by a far margin. Despite this complaint, we have to admit that the song itself is quite hummable. As for our second complaint, it is not as much about the movie itself as it regards the general attitude of couples regarding children and marriage.

Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga is just short of being the most botched-up heist ... (ThePrint)

What disappoints the most is how the Ajay Singh directorial wastes away actors Sharad Kelkar and Indraneil Sengupta in its hurried plot.

The main culprit of the film’s failure has to be its editing. He commits to the role of a robber (Ankit) and loses his cool so naturally and seamlessly as if he’s unaware that he’s on camera. He has upped the ante of playing a robber — Nobody would feel sympathy for his character, the actor has ensured. Kelkar as intelligence officer Sheikh has little screen presence to flesh out his character, and Sengupta is there only to stand in the shadows. Directed by Ajay Singh, the film aspires to be a genre-bender by bringing tropes of a heist and hijack thrillers together. There is little character development of the hostages — they are shown to be completely out of focus and you stay unbothered about casualties.

Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga Review: Yami Gautam Powers The Film Along (NDTV)

Sunny Kaushal has a rakish charm that is a perfect fit for a character who pushes his luck too far after he has dug a huge hole for himself.

But the role has limited emotional bandwidth and that stymies the possibility of a truly memorable turn. As the layers that hide their true colours are peeled in quick succession after the plane has made an emergency landing in Kullu, the film changes course a number of times. The reveals fly so thick and fast that it becomes rather easy after a point to second-guess what lies ahead. Written by Shiraz Ahmed and Amar Kaushik and directed by Ajay Singh, the quirky crime caper centres on a mid-air diamond heist that is upended by the hijack of an aircraft with 150 passengers on board. The last one-third of the 110-minute film delivers revelations and swivels that centre on individuals who string each other along. The writers of Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga, a Maddock Films production presented by Netflix, are like wily cardsharps who get a touch carried away by their bag of tricks and overplay their hand at the business end of their fraught game.
