World Water Day 2023: History, significance, theme (Hindustan Times)

World Water Day 2023: The main objective is to inspire people to sustainably manage the freshwater resources and learn more about water-related issues.

The UN said, "Billions of people and countless schools, businesses, healthcare centres, farms and factories don’t have the safe water and toilets they need. As per the estimates by OECD, global water demand (in water withdrawals) would increase by 55% by 2050. The first World Water Day was observed in the year 1993. According to the United Nations website, the idea behind celebrating the day is to "support the achievement of sustainable development goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030." While many people are privileged to have running water 24x7, there is a huge population around the globe that does not have access to any amount of water. Everyone knows that 'Water is the elixir of life'.

The day encourages people to help in addressing critical water issues, and coordinate various international activities. "Accelerating the change to solve the water and sanitation crisis” will be the theme for World Water Day 2023. World Water Day is observed every year on March 22 with an aim to raise awareness about its importance and conservation.

World Water Day 2023: accessible and safe water for all (Balkan Green Energy News)

World Water Day is celebrated on March 22, and the focus this year is on the global water and sanitary crisis.

She will present the struggle for the right to water and water resources in the country and the Balkan region. And yet, about 90% of investments in water infrastructure come from the public sector. Global water demand is projected to increase by 55% by the middle of the century. Personal and domestic uses of water should have the highest priority over productive uses, such as agri-business and industry. Billions of people are being held back because their right to water and sanitation still needs to be fulfilled. On the same occasion, the United Nations 2023 Water Conference is being held in New York for the first time since 1977, while joint global initiatives have proclaimed the Water Justice Manifesto.

Thanks to these traditional practices, we have ensured the protection of the basin and managed to support the livelihood of our communities. The plant is carried and attached to special gourds, and the women in our community use it to splash milk into the Ewaso Ng’Iro River as they pray. This World Water Day, celebrated under the theme [Accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis](https://www.un.org/en/observances/water-day), we reflect on water scarcity here in Kenya and on the importance of the Ewaso Ng’iro River in tackling this issue and in supporting our livelihoods. When we perform these rites, we draw water from the river, mix it with milk, and splash it onto those involved to drive away evil eyes, cleanse, or as a unifying factor for our community. Historically, we have managed and protected the river using our Indigenous traditional knowledge through various cultural practices, communal sharing, and sustainable use of the resources within the basin. Water is a finite resource and should be used sustainably by the present for the future generation.

According to a report by water.org, 6 per cent of Indians ( 91 million people) lack access to safe drinking water, and 746 million people don’t have proper sanitation facilities. Yet a huge chunk of people (one in four, or 2 billion people worldwide according to the UN, and 771 million people as per water.org) do not have access to clean water. Contaminated surface water and lack of piped water [supply](/definition/supply)are the most common water problems Indians are facing. Investors are now awaiting the outcome of the US Federal Reserve’s monetary policy meeting on Wednesday. Another objective of this day is to educate people about water wastage and help them make optimum use of freshwater resources. When water is scarce, sewage systems can become faulty, and diseases like cholera, malaria, and other contagious diseases may become more rampant.

Seven out of the 10 most water-stressed nations are in the Middle East and North Africa.

Seven out of the 10 most water-stressed nations are in the Middle East and North Africa. Rising temperatures, an increased demand for water and the construction of dams have led to several lakes shrinking across the Middle East. The Middle East has a predominantly dry and arid climate with low rainfall and high temperatures. It is located in northwestern Iran and has now all but dried up to become a salt plain. When water withdrawals surpass available resources, a country is either depleting its aquifers faster than they can be replenished or has significantly high levels of desalination water production. The timelapse videos below show some lakes have all but disappeared.

World Water Day: Expert tips on how to do your part for the planet (The National)

As the UN Water Conference kicks off in New York City, here's how you can help conserve H2O in everyday life.

“Pictures of the Earth's water cycle used in education and research throughout the world are in urgent need of updating to show the effects of human interference,” he says. “We need to reconceptualise the way in which we think about hydrological systems by showing they cannot be viewed purely in the context of natural processes. Basic diagrams tend to show the cycle of water from evaporation, condensation, precipitation and collection, but leave out how things such as human consumption, climate change and land use can have an impact. He recalls growing up in Southern California and one day opening a telephone directory and reading about water-saving tips as part of emergency plans for water scarcity. “We cannot tackle the water crisis without understanding the fundamentals of water science, and how people and water interact,” he says. It is estimated that about 700 million people could be displaced because of intense water scarcity by 2030.

Coupled with inadequate sanitation this can affect how people prepare and eat their meals by increasing the incidence of waterborne diseases, a major cause of malnutrition. A quarter of the people around the world use unsafe drinking-water sources. It will come as no surprise that the most food-insecure people live in developing countries and in arid areas where little water is available – or too much water, of too poor a quality. These benefits also help to increase people’s food security, empowering them over the long term. Bad soils mean more carbon heading into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change, intensifying extreme weather events, accelerating land degradation and perpetuating the cycle. Water gushes where it should trickle and trickles where it should pour freely, thanks to climate extremes.

We cannot afford to be complacent, and we are ready to do our part to create a water resilient world. Water stress is also a driver of geopolitical instability and triggers conflicts. By 2030, the EU targets to support the access of 70 million people to an improved drinking water source and/or sanitation facility. Some are extremely persistent even to the most advanced wastewater treatment. The EU continues to support universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene services through its development cooperation and humanitarian assistance. This is not only a particularly critical challenge for 40% of the world population that lives in areas affected, but it is vital for us all.

Connor said that an actual increase in demand is happening in developing countries and emerging economies where it is driven by industrial growth and especially the rapid increase in the population of cities. Connor said, irrigation for crops has to be more efficient – as it is in some countries that now use drip irrigation, which saves water. It is in these urban areas “that you’re having a real big increase in demand,” he said. This week marks the first major United Nations conference on water in more than 45 years.
