"He's proven himself a very good coach down the years, but it has been about solidity and keeping clean sheets, which is something Vieira didn't struggle with either. "We all thought he'd finished and maybe he did as well. "So, a lot of results were close. "They say the table doesn't lie but it does in a way this season in terms of teams that are around 12th, they don't have time to take risks. He spoke so highly about Wilfried Zaha and the players that are there now. "I said, 'Bielsa, for the last 10 games?' That's not how he works.

Roy Hodgson has been coaxed out of retirement by Crystal Palace, with the ex-England boss returning for a second spell at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace reappoint Roy Hodgson: Why Steve Parish made his ... (The Athletic)

The decision to reappoint the manager who left Palace in 2021 has divided opinion at all levels of the club.

He can also point to the chaos behind the scenes at Watford as being too difficult to overcome in his assignment last season. He took that opportunity to ask manager Marco Silva for an invite to their home match against [Southampton](https://theathletic.com/football/team/southampton/) in which they held a tribute for club legend and [World Cup](https://theathletic.com/football/world-cup/) winner George Cohen after his passing before Christmas. Survival will offer the chance to rebuild in the summer under a younger, longer-term appointment. But in turn, there will be those who appreciate his attention to detail and knowledge from a career which spans over 40 years. Hodgson spoke alongside another former Palace manager, Alan Pardew, at a Leaders Sport Business conference in Abu Dhabi earlier this month and, as part of his work as a patron for the disability organisation Level Playing Field, he launched their Unite For Access campaign film in February. In 2017, Palace were in disarray, trying to play in a new way but with a hopelessly unsuited squad. That is not his fault, but rather a reflection of how expectation has, understandably, grown at Palace. It did not sound like a man pining for a return to the dugout, let alone the intense pressure of a Premier League relegation battle. But it underlined that he still had a deep affection for the club where his playing career had started in 1965. “It’s not something I’m punting for and certainly I don’t think I’ll be in charge of a Premier League team,” Hodgson said last May when collecting a CBE for services to football at Buckingham Palace. Yet Parish will know the optics of firing a manager who had been hired to oversee a progressive, transformational project and replacing him with a 75-year-old whose pragmatic approach had disenchanted many supporters by the end of his previous tenure are awful. Under-21s coach Paddy McCarthy, who had overseen Sunday’s 4-1 defeat at [Arsenal](https://theathletic.com/football/team/arsenal/), will also be part of Hodgson’s staff.

Crystal Palace Hiring Roy Hodgson Is Depressing And Short-Term (Forbes)

Premier League clubs who panic have a habit of making ultra-conservative choices, but this one beggars belief.

I don't think I shall be putting my name forward anymore for further sorties in the world of Premier League football. Three out of the following five games were lost, however, Palace played both Liverpool and Manchester City in that difficult run. It showed as well that we need to improve and there are still a lot of things to improve to turn those performances into a win.” I was quite happy with the performances of the last couple of games we played. That is the frustration. “The Premier League, when you look at the table, has been challenging and tough.

Crystal Palace bank on Roy Hodgson in bid to reunite splintered ... (The Guardian)

The 75-year-old's return may not be popular with supporters, but it's what chairman Steve Parish feels is required to avoid relegation.

“He is the only Palace manager to secure four years in the Premier League and he has helped give us stability in the most turbulent of times.” The task for Hodgson and his trusted lieutenant Ray Lewington, who has worked alongside him at Fulham, England, Palace and Watford, is to put those to one side and reunite a splintered fanbase in shock at the sacking of Vieira. But, for now, Palace’s fortunes are in a more familiar pair of hands. He also inherits a squad seriously lacking in confidence after failing to win a match this year. “Unfortunately, they [Palace] continue to suffer a bit from problems like scoring goals,” Hodgson said. “His record with us simply cannot be overstated,” the Palace chairman said.
