Shazam! Fury of the Gods Review: Orphaned DC Superhero Makes ... (Den of Geek)

Shazam! 2 has plenty of heart to carry it over some rough spots, even as the franchise faces an uncertain future in the new DCU.

With the DC film/TV universe now in the hands of James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are mapping out a major reboot, we don’t know if there’s room for Shazam, Billy Batson, and company in their plans going forward. There are also two bonus scenes during the end credits, which we won’t reveal here, but we will say that the second one certainly points the way for a Shazam 3, which we would very much like to see but probably won’t. But even with the movie’s flaws, we can’t help but enjoy watching Levi and his co-stars — both the young and superhero versions — as they bounce off each other, bravely contend with the new movie’s increasingly frenetic scenario, and even screw up a few times (the local news media calls the team “the Philadelphia Fiascos”). Fury of the Gods afloat for its 130-minute running time is the repartee and genuinely heartfelt performances of both Levi and Angel, as well as their interactions with Mary, Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer/Adam Brody), Eugene Choi (Ian Chen/Ross Butler), Pedro Pena (Jovan Armand/D.J. But that impact gets undermined a few moments later by a scene that feels like it was tacked on in reshoots and which also features a cameo that has already been inexplicably revealed in the movie’s most recent TV spots. They plan to both avenge their father and retrieve the powerful but now broken staff of the Wizard (Djimon Hounsou), which gave Billy and his family their powers but can take them back as well. Mirren and Liu are game (and so is the appealing Zegler, although she seems a bit too fresh-faced to be playing a seasoned immortal deity), but their storyline has that “been there, done that” feeling. There’s also a subplot about Billy aging out of the foster home that doesn’t get enough time to fully develop either. Fury of the Gods](https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/shazam-fury-of-the-gods-shazamily-dc/), finally makes its lonely stand in an effort to tap into the good will generated by his 2019 big-screen debut and, perhaps, plead its case to keep this off-brand DC franchise going. The rest of Billy’s foster siblings/superhero family return as well, with Grace Caroline Currey replacing Michelle Borth as both versions of Mary Bromfield. Its production and release hampered by COVID and now seemingly lame-ducked by the arrival of [a new regime to run DC Studios](https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/new-batman-robin-movie-green-lantern-dcu/), the big red-suited lug’s second movie, [Shazam! It had heart, its stakes were relatively small, and its hero was much more relatably human than the brooding bro-dudes and psychotics we had gotten used to from the DCEU.

Shazam Fury of the Gods Review - Can Lightning Strike Twice ... (GamerBraves)

Shazam Fury of the Gods has fun actions scenes and a great main character but often feels held back by a reliance on CGI and bad comedy.

The change in personality between Billy and Shazam feels too great to the point where it feels like the movie is fighting with itself over what they want this character to be. In many ways, they fall into the problem of a lot of comic book and movie action scenes nowadays in they’re decently shot and choreographed but with an overreliance on CGI and lack of internal weight to make the fights feel meaningful. You have Billy Batson struggling with grounded home life issues but Shazam is far more arrogant, whimsical, and of course with constant quips, and yes, several of these quips come right in the middle of emotional moments to disrupt the tension. Outside of this, the movie was solid overall. Once again they don’t get a lot of development but each adult actor does pretty well at trying to act like a child as an adult with a particular shout-out to Meagan Good as the super version of Darla Dudley, Billy’s younger sister, who acting is simply precious. They also help bolster the theme of family as all three are able to act like real sisters standing up for each other but having their own set of discourse that needs to be sorted out. Billy and his family are thrust into a battle for their superpowers, their lives, and the fate of their world. Some of the best parts of the film are with Asher Angel as the young Billy Batson, even if he doesn’t get a lot of screen time. As with the first movie, Zachary Levi is still great as the big red bruiser that is Shazam. The other kids don’t have as much to do but they still deliver all-around good acting. Asher is able to put a lot of sympathy and relatability into Billy’s struggles as he wants to maintain the life he has but knows it can’t last. [DC movies](https://www.dc.com/movies) were still trying to figure out what direction they wanted to go, the 2019 Shazam in many ways took the best elements of their rivals at [Marvel](https://www.gamerbraves.com/black-panther-wakanda-forever-review-a-darker-and-refreshingly-unique-new-marvel-movie/).

Shazam! Fury of the Gods Trailer (IGN Nordic)

Shazam! Fury of the Gods may not pull the heartstrings like its predecessor, but there's no shortage of the chaotic good humor and energetic performances ...

The lack of focus on its lead character works against Fury of the Gods throughout, but it’s a testament to the strong foundation this movie’s built on that the assembled ensemble is able to share some of that burden. Even in the face of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s impending DCU reboot, Fury of the Gods tells its own story on its own terms, and the missteps it makes along the way at least feel part and parcel with the efforts of a team trying to forge their own path – both in front of and behind the camera. There’s not much to dislike about Grazer’s performance in a vacuum, but it’s what Fury of the Goes is missing as a result of its focus on him that leaves Freddy’s exuberance a double-edged sword. As for Levi’s embodiment of Shazam, the word that rings loudest here is “consistent.” The boyishness of Billy Batson still comes through clear in Levi’s performance, but his occasional melancholy self-doubt isn’t much of a substitute for the comedic goldmine of Billy learning how to be both an adult and a superhero last time. It’s Grazer’s horrified reaction to an especially callous act of violence inflicted on a friend that grounds the Daughters’ malice in something recognizable after a first act which mostly sees them operating in the background. Moments where the kids come up with goofy solves for Serious Problems are gratifying, but Fury of the Gods’ action starts to feel a little tiresome going into the third act, where samey mythological creatures are dropped in to essentially distract the heroes who get less screen time while Shazam gets to do the monologuing with the villains.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods Movie Review Rating: Star Cast: Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Rachel Zegler, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, Meagan Good, ...

All said and done, Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania made Marvel look more like DC and Shazam! [Marvel](https://www.koimoi.com/hollywood-news/ant-man-and-the-wasp-quantumanias-script-leak-leads-to-marvel-shutting-down-the-biggest-mcu-spoilers-group-on-reddit-its-mod-says-the-mouse-disney-always-wins/) to DC, Christophe Beck is here again after Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania, and it’s clear he’s exposing himself a little too much than required. Rachel Zegler, as Anne, gets involved in one of the most dragging tracks of the film, not getting much to explore despite having a good amount of screen time. Henry Gayden (Shazam!) & Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious) are the two writers inculcating the exact two flavours into the story they know and have mastered. Shazam infused superpowers into his foster family as well, and you’ll get no points for guessing who’ll be on his side to fight the fury of the gods. Yeah, that belonged to the goddesses, and hence they’re here to unleash their fury upon the gullible laymen (& women) of the planet Earth.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods: A rushed, ugly and pointless movie (Stuff.co.nz)

REVIEW: Only two hours after I saw it, I had forgotten almost everything about it, except for the things that irritated me.

The Fury of the Gods is a rushed, ugly and pointless film. As I walked out, after the credits, all I could think was how regressive and pointless everything had been. The scenario and most of the dialogue seemed straight out the Paw Patrol movie and I settled in for what promised to be a tough couple of hours. The VFX in Fury of the Gods are not the problem. The writer describes an industry in which the hours are impossible and the pressure to perform is unbearable. If you type "Pixel" and then one of those words you can't put in the newspaper that starts with an F, you'll find it soon enough.

'Shazam! Fury Of The Gods' Flies Toward $75+ Million Worldwide ... (Forbes)

Can the latest DCEU sequel electrify audiences and set the stage for the rest of WBD's superhero slate to fly high this year?

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is a fun, exciting film, but it seems to have disappointed a lot of fans of the previous films who preferred the smaller, more personal stakes, while folks who didn’t care as much for the first two films seem uninterested in Ant-Man taking on more Avengers-level threats and squaring off in settings more commonly found in other Marvel franchises. Fury of the Gods is headed for a softer debut than the studio wants, and on the heels of so many DCEU movies failing to reach even $400 million the past few years, WBD and DC Studios need to do whatever they can to help Fury of the Gods perform higher. Fury of the Gods, setting up a showdown with Shazam, Superman, and Black Adam in another film. Now imagine if Black Adam had made Cavill’s scene a bit longer, or gave him a second scene earlier as Clark Kent, and then included quick shots of Clark and Superman in the trailer. Fury of the Gods hopes for a high-end outcome in the vicinity of $40 million domestic and $50+ million internationally. franchise and the tie-in Black Adam film tried to get Dwayne Johnson’s villain-protagonist/anti-hero to do a cameo in the first Shazam!

Frankly DC, I don't give a Shazam: Fury of the Gods is disposable ... (The Globe and Mail)

Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Directed by David F. Sandberg. Written by Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan. Starring Zachary Levi, Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu.

And because this films central hero has, by design, a childlike sense of wonder baked into his character, the movie is heavy on big-hearted optimism and teamwork-makes-the-dreamwork enthusiasm, not exhausting, mournful cynicism. Sandberg’s sequel finds Philadelphia hero Billy Batson (Asher Angel) struggling to balance his two hectic lives: the normal everyday one in which he’s a smart-alecky teenager hanging out with his large and diverse foster family, and the other in which he utters the magic word “Shazam!” and is transformed into a full-grown man (played by Zachary Levi) with the powers of flight, superstrength, laser eyes et cetera. The experience of watching this new Shazam!

Review: 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods' is exhausting — and not in a ... (Houston Chronicle)

There's an exasperating trend in superhero movies that has reached the end of its shelf life and needs to be chucked. Back in the 2010s, a light touch on ...

Here’s hoping this is not only Shazam’s last outing, but the nail in the coffin of the smarmy superhero as well. A Wolf Blitzer chyron reading “Philadelphia trapped under strange dome” is the only true laugh of the movie, an unintentional one at that. It is ugly, noisy and poorly written (the script is by Henry Gayden and “Fast & Furious” writer Chris Morgan), which is a shame, because director Sandberg has churned out some reliably inspired genre gems, like “Lights Out” and “Annabelle: Creation.” But "Fury of the Gods," which boasts an almost laughably random cast (Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler play a trio of goddess sisters, the daughters of Atlas), is excruciating. The biggest problem with his performance is that it’s completely out of step with his younger counterpart, which was an issue in the first film too. Levi’s performance may be the crown jewel of nonsense swirling at the center of “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” and you’ll find that this overly jokey approach is well past its expiration date.

'Shazam! Fury of the Gods' Review: Yells Like Teen Spirit (The New York Times)

The problem with this sequel is that the character used up his best ideas in the first movie.

The fight scenes are a repetitive headache of lightning zaps and crushed cars. The look is bold and blah, either blue-gray gloom or a shellacking of amber magic-hour glow. For his debut, Sandberg and the screenwriter Henry Gayden were graced with low expectations and a wallop of tenderness and wit. Instead of thinking about the division of god and mortal, we’re distracted by the blurring of actors and wrestlers. Once empowered, the immortal sisters reduce the museum’s treasures (and its tourists) to rubble, having as much reverence for human artifacts as we might have for an Ikea couch. (His uncle is the producer Brian Grazer.) Two hours into his second movie, our hero (Zachary Levi) finally adopts the moniker Shazam!, which stands for his ability to channel the combined abilities of the gods Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury. In 1941, two years after he was created, the character (known then as Captain Marvel) was the subject of a copyright infringement lawsuit by the publishers of Superman, who claimed that he was a knockoff with identical powers. If the Avengers are swaggering mall cops who maintain order for the purpose of selling T-shirts and toys, Shazam is the juvenile delinquent shoplifting their dignity. Even here, within the safe space of his own overlong and clangy movies, he flails for an identity. The problem with Shazam! Spin the jagged M of his lightning bolt horizontally and Sandberg could claim it stands for Captain Metajoke.
