Honduras says it will seek ties with China, spurning Taiwan (NPR)

The money is included in the $63.1 billion request for the State Department and the U.S. The money, to be paid out over 20 years, would extend agreements with the three states under which the U.S. China expelled Lithuania's ambassador, downgraded diplomatic ties and blocked trade with the Baltic country of 2.7 million people after it boosted relations with Taipei in Oct. The loss of Honduras would leave Taiwan with formal diplomatic ties just 13 sovereign states, including Vatican City. President Joe Biden's proposed federal budget released on Thursday includes more than $7.1 billion in funding for the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau. The move drew concern from the U.S., Australia and New Zealand, as well as opposition politicians within the country. Lithuania has since closed its embassy in Beijing and opened a trade office in Taiwan. Our country has made it clear to Honduras many times that Taiwan is a sincere and reliable cooperative partner to our allies. The switch would leave Taiwan recognized by only 13 countries as China spends billions to win recognition for its "One China" policy. Castro said during her presidential campaign in 2021 that she would look for ties with China if elected, but once in power, her government backtracked on those comments. Those deals were due to expire later this year and next, and U.S. Honduras is requested to consider carefully and not fall into China's trap or make wrong decisions that damage the long-term friendship between Taiwan and Honduras."

For decades, China funneled billions of dollars into investment and infrastructure projects across the region, and it has paid off.

"It gets another country abandoning Taiwan, which is something it has been wanting to do for a long time, depriving Taiwan of all its remaining allies." Trade between China and the region has also shot up, expected to reach more than $700 billion by 2035. While some, like Paraguay, told the AP they remain firmly by Taiwan's side, the island has been left with a dwindling number of allies. "For countries like Honduras, not recognizing the government in Beijing meant missing opportunities," Castrillon-Kerrigan. "It is a complex decision, we understand, but Honduras' foreign policy should seek to benefit the people. Now, as geopolitical tensions simmer between China and the Biden administration, that spending has paid off.

Taiwan ally Honduras seeks diplomatic switch to China (BBC News)

Honduran President Xiomara Castro said the pivot aims to expand foreign engagements. Taiwan promptly cautioned Honduras against falling into China's "trap".

Mr Panuelo's claims were contained in a letter to congress last week. "We ask Honduras to carefully consider and do not fall into China's trap and make the wrong decision to damage the long-term friendship between Taiwan and Honduras," the island's foreign ministry said in a statement. On Wednesday, China's foreign ministry welcomed the Honduras leader's statement and said it was willing to develop "friendly and cooperative relations" with the country.

Taiwan denied that, saying comments from the Honduran Foreign Minister did not reflect facts of their communications. Mr Reina said Honduras had asked Taiwan to double its annual aid to US$100 million, but never received an answer. China does not allow countries with which it has diplomatic relations to maintain official ties with Taiwan, which Beijing regards as a renegade province to be reunified with it, by force if necessary.

Honduras' decision was the second foreign policy coup in a week for China, which brokered a diplomatic agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia last week.

That's different, and it may be due to local considerations," Paal told CNA in an email when asked about Honduras' decision to switch ties to the PRC. "Castro announced her intention to switch relations as a presidential candidate, but she has taken a lot of time to get around to doing this. has been signaling to her government not to do this for some time, so maybe she is motivated by concerns unique to her circumstances, not President Tsai's transit, for example. Yet with Castro seemingly determined to break with her predecessor's Taiwan policy, the U.S. State Department spokesman said that promises made by China often went unfulfilled, without elaborating. Despite Castro stating in a social media post Tuesday that she had instructed diplomats to begin the process of establishing relations with the People's Republic of China, Honduras has yet to formally sever ties with Taiwan, officially called the Republic of China.

Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina said on Wednesday that the pivot to China was partly because Honduras was “up to its neck” in financial challenges and debt – including US$600 million (S$800 million) it owes Taiwan. TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras - A high-ranking envoy of US President Joe Biden will travel to Panama and Honduras in March, the US Department of State said on Thursday, days after Honduras said it would establish formal diplomatic ties with China. “These visits advance the commitment of the United States to foster inclusive economic growth, democracy, human rights and rule of law in the Western Hemisphere,” said the statement.
