All England 2023: Lakshya Sen starts with a bang (Hindustan Times)

The young Indian, who reached the All England final last year, beat fifth seed Chou in the first round.

It was level at 20-all too but Prannoy pulled out two crucial points to clinch the contest and enter Round 2. It is a tough opponent so I was prepared to give my all out there and I’m happy with the way I came out in both of those sets," said Sen in the mixed zone after the match. In a game of lightning fast reactions, Sen pulled out some stunning winners that caught Chou completely off guard despite fighting back late into the first game. Apart from the success at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last August, the shuttler from Almora has struggled to make a mark in the international circuit. It’s one of the biggest tournaments and it was always my dream to come and play here. While 2022 started brilliantly for him – winning India Open, reaching the finals of German Open and All England Open – he failed to go past the quarter-finals in all BWF World Tour events in the past year.

The young Indian women's doubles pairing defeated Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai for the first time in five meetings.

In the opening game, she did well to recover from a slow start to lead 16-13 but Zhang put together a run of seven straight points and closed out to take the lead. The Thai duo fought back as they would but at 16-16, the Indians won a marathon point with Jolly diving to retrieve and closing the rally out with a backhand winner. Returning after a long layoff, Sindhu had lost in the opening rounds at Malaysia Open and India Open. In women’s singles, Sindhu was coming into the tournament after a less than ideal start to the 2023 season. The young Indian women’s doubles pairing, who were semifinalists in 2022 after a sensational run, defeated the Thai world No 8 for the first time in five meetings. Coming back to the venue where they made the world of badminton sit up and take notice of their talents, Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly produced another memorable result on Wednesday.
