From 6–11 down in the second, Loh took 15 of the next 20 points to force the decider, but was unable to keep his challenge going. Singapore's Loh, the 2021 world champion, was staring down the barrel of a straight-games defeat to his opponent from the People's Republic of China, but fought hard to send the match to a deciding game.

Prannoy next plays Anthony Ginting in Round 2 after the Indonesian third seed packed off Kantaphon Wangcharoen in straight sets, 21-17, 21-19.

Finally, Prannoy managed to pin him back after he once again levelled at 19-all, and after some stutters and frenetic reflex defending of body smashes, nailed down the match 21-19, 22-20. More often than that though and with some success, Wang used his cross-drops to summon Prannoy to the backhand front corner, drawing out lifting errors. Two clutch points came from straight smashes, as he cut out Wang’s hopes of rushing to take the opener, with a counter-blitz and a lot of shoulder on the big kills.

All England 2023: Lakshya Sen starts with a bang (Hindustan Times)

The young Indian, who reached the All England final last year, beat fifth seed Chou in the first round.

It was level at 20-all too but Prannoy pulled out two crucial points to clinch the contest and enter Round 2. It is a tough opponent so I was prepared to give my all out there and I’m happy with the way I came out in both of those sets," said Sen in the mixed zone after the match. In a game of lightning fast reactions, Sen pulled out some stunning winners that caught Chou completely off guard despite fighting back late into the first game. Apart from the success at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last August, the shuttler from Almora has struggled to make a mark in the international circuit. It’s one of the biggest tournaments and it was always my dream to come and play here. While 2022 started brilliantly for him – winning India Open, reaching the finals of German Open and All England Open – he failed to go past the quarter-finals in all BWF World Tour events in the past year.

Chou made it 18-19 before gifting two match point chances to Sen with a service error. A good judgement at the baseline took Sen to 19-17.
