Liverpool ratings: Mohamed Salah 3/10 in loss at Bournemouth (ESPN)

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah missed the target from the penalty spot for the first time in his Premier League career in the shock loss at Bournemouth.

[Andy Robertson](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/104943/Andy-Robertson), 6 -- Created a problem when his burst forward on the left was picked out by a lovely, dissecting pass from Alexander-Arnold, but Nunez couldn't convert his cross. Offered his side a way back when his header was deemed to have been handled by Smith, but Salah couldn't capitalise. Dropped into midfield after the break, which allowed him the space he needed to make more of an impact, but he wasted a last-gasp chance to level. Later saw a low-driven effort of his held by Neto again. Created Bournemouth's best chance of the game when his attempted crossfield pass went wrong, and he made a mess of a shot at goal with a half-volley to delight the home fans. But he relieved the pressure when he rescued Alexander-Arnold and charged forward before drawing the foul from Lerma. Unsurprisingly withdrawn at the break. Jurgen Klopp, 6 -- It's tough to put the blame on Klopp for this one. Well-beaten by Billing's cool finish. The visitors, visibly stunned, struggled to muster a meaningful response. [Virgil van Dijk](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/157892/Virgil-van-Dijk) glanced wide before [Mohamed Salah](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/173896/Mohamed-Salah) made a hash of things from the spot after [Adam Smith](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/122268/Adam-Smith) was harshly penalised for handball. 'We played Bournemouth's game': Jürgen Klopp rues Liverpool ... (The Guardian)

Jürgen Klopp said Liverpool played the game Bournemouth wanted after his side's 1-0 defeat at the Vitality Stadium.

“Setbacks are setbacks but we are in the situation we are because of the setbacks, that’s how it is,” he said. “And we are in the situation we are because of the good performances as well. “It was a big strength for us in the last year, it made a real difference, but that is how it is.” “In the home games we are in the top four but in the away games we are not even in Europe, there is always a reason and our away results is for sure [the reason],” said Klopp. Klopp refused to blame his top scorer: “The last penalty we got in the league was long ago and it’s completely hypothetical but if we score there, the game could turn. the game was played the opposite of the way we wanted.

Bournemouth midfielder Jefferson Lerma also had to clear a Virgil van Dijk header off the line. “It’s completely hypothetical but if we scored (the penalty) the game could turn. The spaces we had to play were super open, but we didn’t use them enough,” Klopp said on BT Sport. We didn’t create enough. We played balls at the wrong moment against a compact side. We didn’t defend well.

Liverpool could be about to sign Jürgen Klopp's 'own Luka Modrić ... (Liverpool.com)

The priority midfield transfer for Liverpool in the summer transfer window is clearly Jude Bellingham. However, the Borussia Dortmund teenage sensation ...

If Barella is available for anything in the region of the price claimed above, Liverpool would be smart to invest in his services this summer alongside, rather than instead of, Bellingham. [Mohamed Salah](https://www.liverpool.com/all-about/mohamed-salah) for one and then [Alisson ](https://www.liverpool.com/all-about/alisson)have both gone on to become key players under Klopp. Barella is not only the captain of Inter Milan but he has been the key linchpin of the side, and his ability on the ball and reading of the game would definitely help elevate Liverpool's midfield. The Italian European Championship winner is a silky midfielder who is easy on the eye and has the ability to find himself in areas where he can cause problems to the opposition's defense while on the ball. Alongside Bellingham, he would be an ideal fit for Liverpool's midfield in a diamond, with Fabinho able to provide the protection behind them, further rejuvenated by the fresh blood around him. That's not a bad price for such an accomplished midfielder who is still only 26 years old, especially in the context of the market these days. In the past players like Alberto Aquilani or Fabio Borini cast a bad impression of the Italian league at [Anfield](https://www.liverpool.com/all-about/anfield). As well as needing to have alternative options, Liverpool also needs to sign more than just one midfielder in the summer in order to bolster Jürgen Klopp's ranks. [ Liverpool ](https://www.liverpool.com/liverpool-fc-news/)will likely lose three midfielders this summer whose contracts are expiring in James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keïta. Who the Reds will target alongside Bellingham will be interesting to see. This would be a rare opportunity for Liverpool to pursue a midfielder who is still in the prime of his career with plenty left at the top of his game, and who has the profile to fit into Klopp's system like a glove. The priority midfield transfer for Liverpool in the summer transfer window is clearly Jude Bellingham.

Klopp given bizarre reason for Liverpool loss at Bournemouth as ... (Teamtalk.com)

Liverpool have been sent a grim warning over their final Premier League position after an unusual theory was given for their woeful 1-0 loss at Bournemouth.

I honestly don’t know because the Nottingham Forest game was a half 12 kick-off and they struggled. They just never looked as if they were going to win. “They were lethargic, they were slow, they moved the ball sideways so many times. McManaman reckons Liverpool seem to save their worst performances for games that kick-off at 12.30pm. That 5-2 defeat last month at Anfield means Liverpool will end the season without a trophy unless they can somehow win by a three-goal margin at the Bernabeu. Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to get going, losing the midfield battle and making mistakes aplenty in defence.

Liverpool win was Bournemouth's most complete performance ... (The Athletic)

Bournemouth have performed well without getting results this season but it all came together against Jurgen Klopp's side.

In stoppage time, left-back Vina dropped a shoulder on [James Milner](https://theathletic.com/football/player/james-milner-I98QkCY4xQxQGloS/), nutmegged him, and went on a marauding run that [Ibrahima Konate](https://theathletic.com/football/player/ibrahima-konate-vi83z5XUFDUq6gFF/) eventually stopped. [Jefferson Lerma](https://theathletic.com/football/player/jefferson-lerma-nPTsB7QqrQwUvyRY/) put out fires as dominantly as supporters have come to expect. [Hamed Traore](https://theathletic.com/football/player/hamed-traore-DbyaE41oCAFfzr9i/)’s absence, Solanke filled the creative void for Bournemouth. The 3-2 loss at Arsenal proved they can give a top performance but miss out on a positive result. Ouattara and Solanke remained a threat in transition as Liverpool committed more bodies to each attack. [Lloyd Kelly](https://theathletic.com/football/player/lloyd-kelly-kxRRYEcoJrn3OEbc/) returned from a five-week injury lay-off at left-back to keep [Mohamed Salah](https://theathletic.com/football/player/mohamed-salah-NuvaNMBabDgYuJtn/) quiet. After scoring in successive weeks, Billing extended his lead at the top of Bournemouth’s goalscoring chart with six goals, twice as many as he scored in his previous three Premier League campaigns combined (three in 77 appearances). After all, the south coast club’s [Premier League](https://theathletic.com/football/premier-league/) existence has been underpinned by upsets against the biggest teams. The entire team battled from the first whistle to the last. After missing those two chances, most 21-year-olds in their first Premier League campaign would retreat into their shells. This injected urgency into the move with two first-time passes that released Ouattara in behind again. Instead, he is somewhere between a No 9 and a No 10.
