A giant beast known as the mythosaur made its first appearance right before the end of The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 2.

Even during the events of the rise and fall of the Empire, warriors such as Boba Fett displayed a mythosaur skull emblem on their armor. According to the legend, Mandalore the Great tamed and rode a mythosaur, which had a lair in the mines of Mandalore, the same place where Mandalorians extracted their precious beskar. The second installment in the latest The Mandalorian season brought the titular hero back to Mandalore, the abandoned home planet of all Mandalorians.

We need to talk about Mandalore, the mythosaur, and how The Mandalorian just changed Star Wars lore forever.

But as the return of the mythosaur proves, nothing is ever really what it seems when it comes to these Mandalorians. Not only is he the rightful wielder of the Darksaber, which allows him to claim the throne of Mandalore according to warrior tradition, but he’s also found the mythosaur that was foretold. But beyond how the return of the mythosaur affects these characters on a personal level, there’s now something even bigger afoot, and it goes back to a Mandalorian prophecy that predicts a revival for Mandalore and its people. However, when Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, almost all of the Star Wars Expanded Universe up until that point was re-established as "Legends," or: not canon. But they were believed to be long extinct, and whether or not you believe the story of Mandalore the Great taming the Mythosaur of the Living Waters depends on how religious you are. Bo-Katan dives in to rescue him, which she does — and while carrying Din back to the surface, her helmet lamp shines on a massive horned creature, the size of a dragon or a dinosaur. According to ancient folklore, the mines were once a Mythosaur lair. After all, she visited the Living Waters as a child of the royal family where she engaged in all of her people’s religious traditions — for show, mind you. She reads an inscription, almost like the kind you’d find at a museum that provides context for the historical sight before you. After being captured by a enemy droid and saved by Bo-Katan, Din-Djarin to bathe in the Living Waters, which are sacred, so he can atone for removing his helmet in Season 2 and be redeemed. Bo-Katan’s helmet lamp shines on a huge, horned animal akin to a dinosaur, long believed to be extinct. The animal is a sacred, essential part of Mandalorian culture, and the episode marked the first live-action appearance of a living mythosaur.

It goes without saying that Din Djarin and Bo-Katan are not on the best terms, in fact, when Grogu returns she outright wants to dispose of Mando on the spot. Having established that, the Mythosaur represents one more item that could spark conflict between Bo-Katan and Din Djarin, hence another motive for opposing Mandalorian groups to face off in a grueling civil war. That alone helps drive home the idea that Mythosaurs are thought to be extinct, yet they do play a big part in Mandalorian civilization. Long believed to be extinct, Mythosaurs are an important piece of Mandalorian history that could define the series’ path moving forward.

Now that the mythosaur has risen from the crumbling remains of their home world, is Mandalore fated to return to prosperity? As thousands of years passed, mythosaurs became interwoven through Mandalorian legends to the point that the image of the beast’s skull became synonymous with their culture.
