The Mandalorian Season 3 Explained: What's the Giant Beast in ... (ComingSoon.net)

A giant beast known as the mythosaur made its first appearance right before the end of The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 2.

Even during the events of the rise and fall of the Empire, warriors such as Boba Fett displayed a mythosaur skull emblem on their armor. According to the legend, Mandalore the Great tamed and rode a mythosaur, which had a lair in the mines of Mandalore, the same place where Mandalorians extracted their precious beskar. The second installment in the latest The Mandalorian season brought the titular hero back to Mandalore, the abandoned home planet of all Mandalorians.

We need to talk about Mandalore, the mythosaur, and how The Mandalorian just changed Star Wars lore forever.

But as the return of the mythosaur proves, nothing is ever really what it seems when it comes to these Mandalorians. Not only is he the rightful wielder of the Darksaber, which allows him to claim the throne of Mandalore according to warrior tradition, but he’s also found the mythosaur that was foretold. But beyond how the return of the mythosaur affects these characters on a personal level, there’s now something even bigger afoot, and it goes back to a Mandalorian prophecy that predicts a revival for Mandalore and its people. Was Boba Fett, whose armor is emblazoned with the skull of the mythosaur, destined to unite the Mandalorian clans and lead them back to their home world? And while this may just seem like [a fun easter egg](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/star-wars-the-mandalorian-season-3-episode-2-chapter-18-easter-eggs/) to the casual viewer, the arrival of the mythosaur to The Mandalorian has huge implications for the future of Mandalore and the [Star Wars](https://www.denofgeek.com/star-wars/) galaxy. As the leader of the Children of the Watch, she is the guardian of the legends and traditions of the Mandalorians, but, during her time, Mandalore is in ruins, destroyed by the Empire and turned to glass. From now on, whatever happens with them, we can be sure they will play a big role in the Mandalorian renaissance that's to come, and, who knows? [Mandalore](https://collider.com/mandalorian-season-3-trailer-breakdown/) and its people, the Taung were terrible for the Mythosaurs. Everything that was written up to that moment is now defined by the Legends label, and they tell us a bit more about the mythic Mandalorian beasts. The Mythosaur in The Mandalorian Kind of Changes Everything (menshealth.com)

'The Mandalorian' Season 3 Episode 2 revealed a new monster, the Mythosaur, on Mandalore. Here's what the creature is and what it means for Star Wars' ...

The Mythosaur is less a beast or a monster, and more a sign of things to come. But the presence of the Mythosaur makes her second prophecy much more relevant: "The songs of eons past foretold of The Mythosaur rising up to herald a new age of Mandalore." The image of the Mythosaur goes back a long way in the Star Wars canon. Evan is the culture editor for Men’s Health, with bylines in The New York Times, MTV News, Brooklyn Magazine, and VICE. In one, she mentioned that whoever wields the Darksaber would rule all of Mandalore. Their image and likeness has shown up in The Mandalorian corner of the Star Wars-verse. But after [the events of ](https://www.menshealth.com/entertainment/a43100907/mandalorian-season-3-book-of-boba-fett-recap/) [The Book of Boba Fett](https://www.menshealth.com/entertainment/a43100907/mandalorian-season-3-book-of-boba-fett-recap/), our dear friend Mando could only redeem his transgressions (removing his helmet to share a few moments with cute little Baby Yoda/ [Grogu](https://www.menshealth.com/entertainment/a34806557/the-mandalorian-grogu-baby-yoda-name/)) by heading to Mandalore to bathe in the planet's living waters. So in Season 3, Episode 2, "The Mines of Mandalore," we finally headed there—and saw Mandalore for ourselves. However, when Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, almost all of the Star Wars Expanded Universe up until that point was re-established as "Legends," or: not canon. [Darksaber](https://www.menshealth.com/entertainment/a34530319/what-is-the-darksaber-the-mandalorian/) in the meantime). It was further illustrated in between those films in the Marvel Comics-produced Star Wars #69. These beasts are supposed to be long-extinct, but were believed to roam on Mandalore thousands of years earlier; the first Mandalorians supposedly tamed them and even rode them. This has nothing to do with giant blue people or the planet of Pandora though; Bo-Katan is startled because this is, indeed, a Mythosaur.

What Is a Mythosaur? 'The Mandalorian' Season 3 Episode 2 ... (Decider)

The Mandalorian Chapter 18 took Din Djarin to the Mines of Mandalore and totally blew up the myth that Mythosaurs are a myth. But what is a Mythosaur?

But they were believed to be long extinct, and whether or not you believe the story of Mandalore the Great taming the Mythosaur of the Living Waters depends on how religious you are. Bo-Katan dives in to rescue him, which she does — and while carrying Din back to the surface, her helmet lamp shines on a massive horned creature, the size of a dragon or a dinosaur. According to ancient folklore, the mines were once a Mythosaur lair. After all, she visited the Living Waters as a child of the royal family where she engaged in all of her people’s religious traditions — for show, mind you. She reads an inscription, almost like the kind you’d find at a museum that provides context for the historical sight before you. SPOILERS AHEAD, because there’s one big reveal that we have to talk about: what is a Mythosaur on The Mandalorian?

The Mandalorian: Mythosaur And Mandalore History, Explained (Game Rant)

Episode 2 of The Mandalorian's season 3 introduced a mythical Star Wars monster, yet one never before seen on screen.

It goes without saying that Din Djarin and Bo-Katan are not on the best terms, in fact, when Grogu returns she outright wants to dispose of Mando on the spot. Having established that, the Mythosaur represents one more item that could spark conflict between Bo-Katan and Din Djarin, hence another motive for opposing Mandalorian groups to face off in a grueling civil war. That alone helps drive home the idea that Mythosaurs are thought to be extinct, yet they do play a big part in Mandalorian civilization. [canon debut in The Empire Strikes Back](https://gamerant.com/star-wars-jedi-survivor-empire-strikes-back-similar-dark-story/) as the creature depicted on Boba Fett's armor, and since then these dinosaur-like monsters have become a treasured part of The Mandalorian's growing lore. [The Mandalorian](https://gamerant.com/tag/the-mandalorian/) itself has dedicated a few lines to setting up these monsters' entrance into Din Djarin’s story way before Bo-Katan took him to the Living Waters of Mandalore. Long believed to be extinct, Mythosaurs are an important piece of Mandalorian history that could define the series’ path moving forward.

Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) dug too greedily, and too deep, and awoke… well, not a Balrog, but an equally powerful creature.

Now that the mythosaur has risen from the crumbling remains of their home world, is Mandalore fated to return to prosperity? As thousands of years passed, mythosaurs became interwoven through Mandalorian legends to the point that the image of the beast’s skull became synonymous with their culture. If you’ll recall, The Armorer ( You’ll notice that the name “mythosaur” contains a familiar word: “myth.” That’s not coincidence. Lord of the Rings jokes aside, “The Mines of Mandalore” did move The Mandalorian’s story forward quite a bit. Mandalorian ancestors tamed the giant beasts and once rode on their backs, but a great war rendered them extinct…
