“Big thanks to the supporters. You can feel that they are always dangerous.” REUTERS, AFP Chelsea have slumped to 10th place in the English Premier League, with their chances of reaching next season’s Champions League via a top-four finish all but gone, and the team were eliminated early in both of England’s knockout cup competitions. That turned a 1-0 deficit in the first leg in Germany into a ticket for the quarter-finals and kicked off celebrations that harked back to some of the Blues’ great nights in Europe’s top competition over the past 20 years. Chelsea fans, many of whom had booed him loudly as defeat followed defeat in recent weeks, cheered the team off the Stamford Bridge pitch after a goal by Raheem Sterling and a retaken penalty by Kai Havertz either side of half-time earned the team a 2-0 win on the night. LONDON – Chelsea manager Graham Potter looked like the most relieved man in London on Tuesday night, as he punched the air and blew kisses into the crowd after his struggling side’s 2-1 aggregate win over Borussia Dortmund in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Chelsea Saves the Day; Saving the Season Can Come Later (The New York Times)

Beating Dortmund in the Champions League will ease the pressure on Graham Potter and his team, but it won't end the questions about where they are headed.

And it is only natural, given the sheer number of players at his disposal, that Potter has been unable to resist the temptation to cycle through all of his options. But more immediately it can also betray an uncertainty, a restlessness and a lack of clarity, all of which have a habit of making the long term irrelevant. It is better, of course, to win in the way you want to win. First, it had lost ground in the race for a top-four finish in the Premier League, and then it had lost sight of it completely. It was nip and tuck, taut and tense, almost until the end. Still, it was apt, because even in victory it is not immediately possible to discern a clear, distinct pattern in this Chelsea team. But it is preferable to the alternative: Winning this game was not conclusive, but losing it might have been. It was fitting, really, that the game, and the round-of-16 tie, hinged on a five-minute period in which nobody actually played any soccer. Potter will know, of course, that edging past a somewhat depleted Borussia Dortmund, 2-0, on Tuesday to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Champions League is not a panacea. The club’s owners, meanwhile, have been assiduous in reiterating their ongoing faith in the 47-year-old Potter, but there comes a point where the frequency of those reassurances is itself reflective of a problem. As a rule, all of that ends only one way for a coach: not just at Chelsea but especially at Chelsea. Potter, for the last few weeks, has had the air of a manager desperately trying to keep his head above water.

After 2-0 Defeat To Chelsea, Dortmund Fear Loss Of Momentum (Forbes)

Despite winning its home leg against Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund has been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League.

In some ways, it was almost the reverse of the first leg when Chelsea had the majority of the ball, but it was Dortmund that would that would score the only goal. But the biggest question is what will be Dortmund’s reaction to the defeat? “I’ve just looked at our possession stats, and it says that we have had more, but it didn’t feel like we had it in the places where we could hurt them.” But they were not the reason Dortmund has exited the Champions League at the round of 16 stage. But by the letter of the law, Makkiele was correct with both his decisions. “It was the referee's fault.

Carter comes off the bench to score her fifth of the season but Albion go down 3-1.

She was stranded five minutes later though when Terland hit an instinctive volley from the right-hand edge of the box which unluckily clattered back off the crossbar with Musovic stranded. Jess Carter was free at the back post from the resultant corner only to volley wide, but Albion did go behind in the 11th minute when Zoe Morse brought down Sam Kerr in the box. Albion struggled to get out of their own half in the opening quarter.

Universe stays kind and preserves the age of Graham Potter at ... (The Guardian)

There were moments against Borussia Dortmund when Chelsea's manager seemed doomed but VAR and Kai Havertz came to the rescue.

There was a nice moment at the end as Potter celebrated with the Chelsea fans, gamely punching the air and letting out a slightly awkward roar. At times Potter to Chelsea has looked not just a poor or ill-timed appointment, but a candidate for worst marriage of club, board and manager in modern football history. But victory here still came on the back of an agonising run of form, and with a team who were ready to fight. And by the end those four minutes felt like something passing, just a little, and just for now. Sterling crash-tackled his way forwards and lashed it violently into the net, stopping the clock before it could hit eight hours of football without a Chelsea attacker scoring a goal. A minute later Ben Chilwell slashed a shot wide, with the Chelsea bench already up leaping and clutching at each other in desperation.

Spot of good fortune cheers Chelsea (China Daily)

LONDON — Maybe this will be the turning point for underfire Chelsea manager Graham Potter. He went into Tuesday's game against Borussia Dortmund with questions ...

I tried to wait and look at the keeper and the second one was a bit easier." "Fair play to Chelsea and congratulations," he said. This is a big tournament and it's the last trophy that we can win. "We have been through a tough period and this competition means a lot to us," Potter said. "The last two weeks were hard, we lost a lot of games," Havertz said. And he thought he had let another chance go by when firing his first penalty against the post before VAR came to his rescue. Havertz repeated his technique, sent Meyer in the opposite direction again, but on this occasion he found the back of the net to put Chelsea in front in the 53rd. Havertz, whose goal secured the Champions League title for Chelsea in a 1-0 win in the final against Manchester City two years ago, had already hit the post in the first half and seen another effort ruled out for offside. "I was a bit nervous but I scored. Not only did his team show the character to recover from losing the first leg, it did so by scoring two goals in a game for the first time in 2023. "We wanted to progress and get into the last eight and it sets us up for the next few weeks." A twice-taken penalty by Kai Havertz secured a 2-0 win in front of the Blues' co-owner Todd Boehly at Stamford Bridge to ease the pressure on Potter and spark celebrations inside the stadium rarely seen during such a troubled campaign.
