Sean Dyche's Everton experiment: Strikers? We don't need no strikers (The Athletic)

Sean Dyche experimented with no strikers against Forest. It was by necessity, but it seemed to work...

The next highest overall was Forest’s Gibbs-White on 10.9km, just ahead of the ageless [Seamus Coleman](https://theathletic.com/football/player/seamus-coleman-AzYEiBc0z7HqMrtB/)’s 10.7km for the visitors. “He is technically very good and he’s stronger than you think, so I was pleased for him — and I was pleased for ‘Douc’. So for his team to score twice without a recognised centre-forward on the pitch is testament to the improvements he has prompted from McNeil and Doucoure, as well as Gray’s lively display. “I wasn’t really bothered if he (Gray) was recognised or not. “There are pleasing signs from what the players are delivering and how they are taking these games on,” said Dyche. [Crystal Palace](https://theathletic.com/football/team/crystal-palace/) 3-0 at Goodison on October 22 — a dismal run of 15 matches in all competitions without doing so, underlining the lack of firepower which has become so damaging. Once again, Everton proved they were up for the fight; both in terms of graft and aggression. He seemed intent on taking the chance handed to him by his manager and was determined not to be out-muscled by Forest’s defenders. Whether their failure to capitalise on all that effort and attacking improvement returns to haunt them will remain to be seen. Gray’s hard pressing and shrewd use of the ball helped the visitors compete. So it felt like time Dyche found a way to get the club’s top goalscorer in this barren season back into the starting line-up having begun those same three matches on the bench. But it was his overall play that helped Everton pose a greater attacking threat than they have managed lately.

Will Everton fans want to keep Sean Dyche brutalist football after ... (Football365.com)

Sean Dyche might keep Everton in the Premier League but what then? There's nothing to suggest he has a Plan B, says John Nicholson.

The pro-Sean brigade point to his success at keeping Burnley in the top flight and there is no denying that achievement. Doing all the right gestures, striking alpha male poses, casting cynical looks at officials and shouting loudly at players. Pitchside at the City Ground, Dyche was doing his best building site manager impression. He’s got the middle-management patter down to a tee. When the Everton players tried to do anything skilful, they looked like an elephant in tights trying to do ballet. A hard shell, yes, but a shell all the same. If they can’t bully their opponents, if putting 10 behind the ball doesn’t work, is there a plan B? Certainly not in the mainstream football media where he appears untouchable. Ex-players nodded sagely and declared it a good choice, as they usually do when the appointment is a British man. In Brennan Johnson they certainly had the best player on the pitch. On Sunday, they played a brutal lower-league mid-90s style game, tried to disrupt Forest with fouls, aggression, pushing, throwing the ball away, provoking fights, squaring up to the opposition and play-acting. He’s got the Tony Pulis habit of picking all the biggest boys in the class available to him.

Nottingham Forest 2-2 Everton: Premier League – as it happened (The Guardian)

Brennan Johnson twice levelled the scores for Nottingham Forest to earn a vital point against relegation rivals Everton.

[Everton](https://www.theguardian.com/football/everton) enjoy all the possession in the first minute of so to keep the City Ground quiet. They are both a threat but if Forest win the first header, it leaves a big gap in midfield. 42 mins: Godfrey, who has had a tough time, goes into the book for taking down Johnson on the right touchline. Gibbs-White is their most dangerous player but Shelvey seems to be playing in the space he often occupies and he is more keen to play in behind sooner. 57 mins: Now Tarkowski is booked for an elite-level lunge on the touchline on Lodi in an attempt to stop a counter. 49 mins: Wood is very much a man aiming to come deep to flick the ball on. With Godfrey on a booking, the referee would have had a decision to make. “This is the sort of game you have to feel sorry for the ref,” says Samuel Campbell. 63 mins: Coleman bundles over Freuler in the corner and there is another split second of pushing. 80 mins: Forest break but Johnson pulls back McNeil to take him out of the game. He fires his shot across Pickford who gets a strong wrist to the ball and he sees it go away from red shirts. Another yellow is shown on a busy day for the referee.
