Your sleep data gets crunched into one of three sleep types: “Dozing, Snoozing, or Slumbering.” Pokémon whose sleep type matches yours will appear in the game, which is an easy and adorable way to start to get a sense of how well you’re sleeping. You can pre-order the Steam version of the game for 10% off from most Green Man Gaming which is set to release on March 28. As befits a Pokémon game, the title features Professor Neroli, “who’s researching Pokémon sleep.” That sounds like serious, academic business for sure, but it seems rather straightforward in practice. You get a rough average of the overall time you were asleep (and not staring into the blinding light of your phone, doomscrolling on Reddit for six hours...you know who you are), and some fancy stat readouts for various bits of sleep data. In a break from Pokémon series tradition, the main star seems to be Snorlax (the big sleepy Pokémon) rather than Pikachu (the electric mouse Pokémon), though the trailer also features somebody getting poked by a Bulbasaur (shoutout to all of the cool kids who picked Bulbasaur) and another shot with a Slowbro in the bed—even though Slowbro, which is like a small hippopotamus with a gigantic crustacean attached to its tail, seems like one of the objectively worst pocket monsters to have in your bed. The software will analyse your sleep and divide it into three categories: dozing, snoozing, and slumbering. The app can be used in tandem with Pokémon GO Plus +, a physical gadget that links to both Pokémon Sleep and Pokémon GO. The premise of the app is that you set up the app and simply fall asleep or attempt to sleep with your smartphone in bed.

“Your adventure takes place on a small island where you’ll carry out research on how Pokemon sleep. Urging players to “rest your very best”, it added: “The longer you sleep, the higher your score in the morning, and the more Pokemon you’ll see appear around Snorlax.” You’ll work with a large Snorlax, who lives on the island, and Neroli, a professor who’s studying Pokemon sleep styles,” said the company.

Pokémon Sleep, a new mobile game, is slated to launch in Summer 2023, and requires players to sleep, as its name suggests.

The game will be available on both iOS and Android devices. Pokémon Sleep will require players to research how Pokémon sleep Pokémon that gather around Snorlax will also follow a similar classification and will appear in styles similar to how the player slept the night before. Pokémon will also be making appearances in the game depending on the duration and style of the player’s sleep, giving more reasons for them to be a Snorlax IRL. Aptly named Pokémon Sleep, the mobile game incentivises players to clock more sleep in exchange for a higher score. Soon, the Pokémon Company will be launching a game that quite literally encourages players to do the opposite: sleep.

Pokémon that share the same sleep style as you will subsequently appear in the app, gathering around the giant sleeping Snorlax that is the focal point of the game's island setting. This was followed by the Pokéwalker pedometer in 2009, which could connect to Pokémon HeartGold or SoulSilver to grant Pokémon experience based on the player's step count. A follow up to the Pokémon GO Plus, this device will alert Pokémon Sleep isn't the first time Pokémon has flirted with health gadgets. Players leave their phone beside them when they go to bed, allowing Pokémon Sleep to record and analyse their snooze overnight. Judging by screenshots of the app, these appear to be analogous with phases of sleep.

The device features Pikachu singing lullabies and acting as a morning alarm, unlocking more sounds as players sleep more. More Pokemon will appear around Snorlax as the user sleeps, encouraging players to “rest to their very best”. Each Pokémon will also have its own sleep styles, and players can discover Pokémon with the same sleep styles and complete their sleep style dex.
