The big question coming into this English Football League cup final is just how much Man United's big Europa League win over Barcelona on Thursday has taken out of Erik ten Hag's side. United last claimed a trophy in the 2016-17 season when the Red Devils won this very tournament, as well as the UEFA Europa League, under the management of Jose Mourinho. Newcastle, meanwhile, haven't tasted glory since winning the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup (a precursor of the Europa League) all the way back in 1969.

Ten Hag is the first manager at Old Trafford to win silverware since Jose Mourinho. They're third in the Premier League table and still in the Europa League draw. The club has now lost each of their past nine matches at Wembley, a run that began in the 1974 FA Cup final. "No complaints with how we played, obviously the scoreline doesn't say that, and that's where football can be cruel," Newcastle manager Howe said. He was deemed to have been played marginally onside after a VAR check.

Man Utd 2-0 Newcastle player ratings: Casemiro the hero for Erik ... (Sky Sports)

Player ratings from Wembley as Casemiro shines for Man Utd on a day when Erik ten Hags side had to rely on the strength of their defence; Bruno Guimaraes ...

The Brazilian's physical presence was key for Newcastle in the midfield battle and he held on to the ball consistently to give his side control for large periods. He showed no fear on a big occasion but just could not find a way through. His experience was important for Newcastle on a huge day in the club's history. He missed a good chance to halve the deficit just before half-time. Man Utd's goldenboy did not get the goal in the end but produced a neat flick to Wout Weghorst before getting the ball back for Man Utd's second. Assisted Rashford's shot that Sven Botman deflected in for the second with a well-timed pass. Could not quite live up to his goal against Barcelona, sending a tame shot wide of the post in the second half under little pressure on the edge of the box. He delivered when it counted, though, to help end his side's six-year trophy drought - even if the goal was not awarded to him. He was sometimes guilty of a few loose passes, but more than made up for it with his reading of the game. He produced a big reflex stop to deny Allan Saint-Maximin in the first half when Newcastle were putting Man Utd under intense pressure. It was Shaw's delivery that unlocked the game for Man Utd as Casemiro headed in their opening goal. Martinez also produced a vital block to foil Bruno Guimaraes in the second half.

Man Utd 2 Newcastle United 0 (Manchester United)

Manchester United have won our first major trophy in six years, defeating Newcastle United 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

It mattered little in the end, as the Reds were able to celebrate the final whistle on a joyous occasion at Wembley. The best chance fell to Joelinton, who had two big opportunities to score in the space of a few seconds, the first taking a huge block from substitute Aaron Wan-Bissaka and the second ricocheting off Lisandro Martinez. Only 30 seconds into the half, United looked to try and put the game out of sight. That’s the spirit of United. And just before the half was about to conclude, Weghorst nearly grabbed a third for Ten Hag’s men. The attacks kept coming from Ten Hag’s men with Bruno Fernandes storming way with Rashford in a two-against-one break against Trippier. VAR checked the goal, but Callum Wilson’s foot appeared to keep our Brazilian star onside and the goal stood as Wembley erupted for a second time. The Dutch forward managed to get the best of Fabian Schar and Sean Longstaff before firing a shot straight at Loris Karius. After seeing off the threat of Newcastle’s attack, Rashford threatened once again. Starting on the left, United’s no.10 linked up well with Weghorst and the Dutchman made a beautiful run into Newcastle territory. The England international found the run of Sean Longstaff and the Newcastle-born midfielder fired a low cross dangerously across goal. Both sides started with quick counter-attacks to try to catch the other team out.
