F1 Academy: Is Formula 1 finally taking women seriously? (BBC News)

Two teenage female drivers say they hope the new F1 Academy will break down barriers in the sport.

"I don't want to be seen as a female driver, I just want to be seen as a driver. I've got to get physically fitter and things like that. But are they finally taking women seriously with the introduction of the new F1 Academy? A female driver hasn't competed in a Formula 1 grand prix since 1976. "As soon as I heard about the series, the backing of Formula 1 and the teams and people involved, I was extremely keen to be part of this first historic season," she tells Newsbeat. "And if it's not me, I want it to be the next generation.

There are a lot of races on the calendar where you need different things from the car, so step-by-step.” “It was good," Verstappen said when he stepped out of the cockpit after the chequered flag brought the first day of testing to a close. "But the car is running well, and I think that’s the most important. "It's a bit of an evolution from last year. Compared to last year, there are few regulation changes coming into effect this season meaning that the upgrades on the 2023 cars are fairly minimal. ANALYSIS: What did the opening day of 2023 testing imply about ... (Formula 1 RSS UK)

Uniquely among the teams, Red Bull had their same driver in the car all day and Max Verstappen led the headline times – but only barely from the Aston Martin of ...

There looked to be more set-up changes necessary and when Hamilton set the car’s best time, he was around 0.5s off the pace of Verstappen’s Red Bull. The team worked for a long time with aero rakes on the front of Sainz’s car in the morning and on that of Charles Leclerc in the afternoon, hence not as many laps were completed (fifth behind Red Bull, Mercedes, Williams and Alfa). Carlos Sainz headed the times for the first couple of hours, but didn’t progress as much as Red Bull as the day went on. These comparisons are not to be treated as gospel, but the ease with which Red Bull ran through their programme and how it was invariably the fastest car on track whenever it ran – by a significant margin – looked ominous. The track was in excess of 35 degrees C when Alonso set that time in the early afternoon – and he’d set a lap not much slower than that earlier when it was even hotter. Alonso’s time was set with the track down at around 23 degrees C when the surface is much grippier.

Bahrain F1 Testing Day 1: Review by Drivers and Teams (Grand Prix 247)

The Alpine F1 Team continued its preparations for the 2023 FIA Formula 1 World Championship as pre-season testing began on Thursday at the Bahrain International ...

These were preventative measures, but we thought they were useful to make so we could run safely and reliably for the remainder of the day. There are plenty of positives to take away and we can focus on maximising the potential of the car in the coming days. George Russell: It was great to be back out in the car and get a first real experience of the W14. Hopefully the car continues to run like clockwork, and we can make the most of the remaining track time. Oscar Piastri: “My first morning of testing went pretty smoothly which is a good start to the season. The car was responding well to the changes we made and we will continue to review the data this evening ahead of Fernando’s time in the car tomorrow. “We will have to recover the time we lost over the next two days to ensure we maximise our learnings ahead of the race next week. We had a lot of good running throughout the day when it was hot and sunny and also in the evening which is more representative. We were able to achieve the targets that we had set out and I’m happy with how I felt in the car. The goal for the morning session was focused on reliability through a series of baseline runs with Hulkenberg finishing at the break with 51 laps to his credit. Of course, this is only the opening day of testing, and there is plenty of work ahead for everyone, but it’s been a positive start. The Swiss-based team had a successful first day of official track action, as Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas put the new C43 to the test at the Bahrain International Circuit.

The most important thing was to do mileage, and we had no issues. After the break he managed to reduce his time by just over a tenth. C3 Verstappen was the only driver to stay in the cockpit all day, meaning that none of the others taking part managed to follow him past the 100 lap milestone.

But for now we are very much focused at the moment on the Madrid launch and using it as an opportunity to see how it performs." "We felt excited by, rather than launching in London, New York, Los Angeles – an obvious choice – launching the show in a market like Madrid. "We will use that first show to refine it before it goes to the next city," Harvey explains. Part of what makes F1 such a fascinating subject matter is the fact it does have this richness to it – it's a story of triumph as well as tragedy. And that really is reflected so accurately in the sport's history." "The ambition now, for all of the teams and everyone involved in F1, is 'how can we make this one of the 21st century's great stories? F1's top brass and the teams themselves have played a significant role in the production of this new show. Ticket sales, Harvey declares with an obvious note of pride, "have been very, very positive" with the first weekend completely sold out. "So we're able to look back at what people like Bernie and Ron Dennis, Enzo Ferrari and Colin Chapman – the pioneers – created for the sport, but we're also now able to look forward to what the future holds for F1. This new much larger, more diverse audience is a large part of the reason why now is the right time for F1 to go bigger and bolder than it has ever done before in terms of its storytelling. It promises a wealth of artefacts, interactive displays and historical references designed to cater to motorsport fans old and new – ideal, considering the global growth in popularity F1 has enjoyed in recent years.
