Car-data firms flop as automakers see dollar signs in software (The Seattle Times)

Startups are looking to scrub, standardize and organize data so it can be useful to third parties, but carmakers don't want to share all that much.

As for BlueCruise, the advanced driver-assistance system that it offers as a subscription service — Ford handles the data in-house. After issuing a going-concern warning last year, it’s in the process of merging with another blank-check company — a transaction that Bloomberg Opinion columnist Chris Bryant has dubbed a Re-SPAC — to secure $100 million in fresh funding. One former startup executive compared the situation with the 1989 film “Field of Dreams,” where Kevin Costner built a stadium in a cornfield to lure the ghosts of famous baseball legends. It expects to triple or quadruple revenue this year, though sales amounted to just $4.8 million in the first nine months of 2022. Another constraint: Some data is valuable only in the aggregate, when provided by many automakers. In December, the company cut jobs to preserve its dwindling cash.

(…) We want an official test of the range of electric cars in winter. This is the fourth winter range test NAF and Motor have conducted. We had some really cold parts on the test route today, but mostly the cars drove in normal winter temperatures. Taking place on 1-2 February, the test assessed the range and charging speed of electric cars available on the Norwegian market. In our test, the best cars are the ones that come closest to their stated range”, says Soedal. The cars started with a fully charged battery, without preheating, from Skur 13 in Oslo where the temperature overnight was between 10 and 15°C.

Cheap Car Insurance For 19-Year-Olds (Forbes)

When budgeting for car insurance for a 19-year-old driver, it's important to know where to find the best coverage for the lowest average price.

Safe driving will influence the cost of car insurance for a 19-year-old in a good way. Average cost to add a 19-year-old male to a parent policy Average cost to add a 19-year-old female to a parent policy Average annual cost to add a 19-year-old to a parent policy Average annual car insurance cost for a 19-year-old on their own policy Demonstrating safe driving behavior can help lower car insurance costs because insurance companies will consider you less of a risk to insure. Yes, a 19-year-old driver can get their own car insurance policy. Collision and comprehensive insurance are less expensive to have as part of your policy if your car is cheaper to repair or replace. That’s a hefty expense but much cheaper than the average car insurance cost for a 19-year-old on their own policy ($4,649 per year). If you’re shopping for insurance for both parents and a 19-year-old, USAA has the cheapest car insurance. If your car costs more to repair or replace than other vehicles, the extra cost will be reflected in the price you pay for That’s about $144 a month extra parents will pay for adding their 19-year-old driver to their policy.

What Objectively Good Car Do You Hate? (Jalopnik)

Not all automotive loathing has to be coherent or rational.

What in the hell was going on with those tail lights? Why was there a random painted square on the side? But when the Defender first launched, the story was different: I hated the thing.
