It looks like it'll only get better for Liverpool from here, but for Newcastle United it has to get worse because of the mess Nick Pope made.
It's harsh for Nick because he's been magnificent for us and to miss the next game is a huge blow for him." Obviously there were moments were we could have done better, but to come away with three points and a clean sheet and to be back in the team, I'm incredibly happy. Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk on the performance: "Winning and keeping a clean sheet against a side who have only been beaten once this season -- it was well-deserved. Liverpool made easy work of the win, but two crucial saves by Alisson in the first and last ten minutes of the game ensured it could be so comfortable. [England](/soccer/team?id=448) goalkeeper for the rest of the game and had to play out 68 minutes with ten men, which was an impossible situation considering Newcastle were already 2-0 down. I thought we did really well -- the red card probably would have been a wonderful goal as well if Pope hadn't got his hand on the ball. Newcastle is a tough place for any team to visit, but Liverpool made easy work of the game, which was already won before goalkeeper was sent off for the home side in the 22nd minute. [Liverpool](/soccer/team?id=364)'s victory at St James' Park was only Newcastle's second Premier League defeat of the season -- the other came with a late loss at Liverpool in August -- but Howe's side have now won just one of their last seven league games. What was the Newcastle keeper thinking when he handled the ball outside his penalty area? The [Brazil](/soccer/team?id=205) international can't carry Newcastle on his own and results had already started to tail off before he started his three-match ban, which ended with this game. But even if he does, Howe will have to choose between Karius and Darlow -- two keepers who have spent this season watching from the sidelines. Liverpool will face Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League in the Round of 16. Here are the previews for both the teams.
- The Scousers managed to beat Real Madrid in their first three European matches. Konate and Luis Diaz are confirmed absentees for the match. His best ever and to mention, and he also scored the only goal against Liverpool in the UCL final. Real Madrid on the other hand are still holding up quite well. Gakpo is also starting to find form in the Premier League after scoring in the past 2 games. The Scousers are in desperate need for some signings as well.
Liverpool have the chance to avenge the 1-0 loss to Real in the final in Paris last May and go into the first leg in much-improved form.
If it is to stand a chance of going far in the competition, much could rely on Romelu Lukaku staying fit and getting his goal-scoring form back. The City manager is still waiting to win his first Champions League title with a team other than Barcelona featuring It faces Eintracht Frankfurt away on Tuesday on the back of a five-game winning run. A 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest on Saturday saw Arsenal overtake City at the top of the table and highlighted vulnerabilities that have been evident for much of the season. The Champions League is the one major trophy City has failed to win since being taken over by Abu Dhabi’s ruling family in 2008. But it faces a fight to hold onto its Spanish league title, with Barcelona leading the way at the top of the standings.
Darwin Nunez was the star of the moment as he opened the scoring in Liverpool's win over Newcastle. Post-match, Jurgen Klopp provided a worrying update.
We will have to see. [James Pearce on Twitter](https://twitter.com/jamespearcelfc/status/1627038359242547200?s=46&t=DG1CalM1UlloNHGSLbe7fA), Klopp refused to give a definitive answer to Nunez injury concerns. They’re the only team to beat Eddie Howe’s Magpies this season, and they’ve done it twice.

Read on for a summary of what Klopp had to say about the game in his post-match press conference… On the result and Liverpool's performance… I think we knew, ...
So the only way we can do it and get back on this track is by winning, and we did that now twice in a row and that feels absolutely incredible. Yeah, it's massive, but that explains a little bit the issues we had in the game then that we couldn't control it better, so just because it's so long ago that we were in a situation obviously like that. I don't think we are in a position now where we can have a big mouth and say, 'We are here and go again.' It is obvious we are in a better place than we were a couple of weeks ago but there's still space for improvement and we have to show consistency. Because of the amount of set-pieces we gave away, that was always a threat and there is no advantage when it's 11v10 when there is a ball on the corner flag or wherever. I think that was possible, if Mo gets on the ball it is pretty likely we will score there and playing against 11 because it was also the moment when we lost a bit of rhythm. We have to recover and then go for that. In the end, he had to go off with a shoulder issue and we need further assessment. I didn't see it back, [but] in that moment it looked for me like a penalty but I don't know. It was a bit wild and stuff like this, but in the moment we controlled it we scored incredible goals. You can train, but then you need the games and stuff like this. Then the second goal, real good link-up play and then the chip from Mo for Cody… I saw it but somebody was in between and in the end, there was a red card [but] I would have definitely preferred a goal.

It is a familiar refrain around Anfield - and across Europe - but the origin story of football's most famous anthem is full of surprises.
The song was always on at Anfield and it would intermittently break out into the broader culture. The singing of 40,000 Liverpool supporters floated down the tunnel, into the dressing room and into our hearts. So I went to see the musical to understand where it was in it and it was at the sudden death scene. With [Everton](https://theathletic.com/football/team/everton/) league champions in 1963 and FA Cup winners in 1966, the city, its music and its clubs were gaining a global profile. “We got the whole team on stage and we sang Walk Alone on the Ed Sullivan Show,” he recalled. and I Like It at No 1 in the charts and we were looking for our third song. The home side hit the woodwork twice when down to 10 men and could easily have set up a nervy finale. There’s still room for significant improvement, but a first away league win since Boxing Day represented another important step forward following on from the Merseyside derby triumph. “Nearly an assist, unfortunately not, but I’m happy with the win and the clean sheet. The finish from the Uruguayan, who scored in the Premier League for the first time since mid-November, was emphatic. They have also provided a much-needed injection of belief as Jurgen Klopp’s side prepare to tussle with the European champions in a re-run of last season’s final in Paris. The second goal was equally impressive. Pace, incision, vision and quality in abundance. Not least in terms of their attacking fluency.

Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has been speaking about a player struggling for minutes since the Premier League returned after the World Cup.
He might not yet be a 'typical 'Jürgen Klopp player' but in time, he can become one. In many ways, his admissions should not come as a surprise given how the German boss nurtured the likes of established names like Fabinho, "That doesn’t help a lot, but that’s another thing in a long career that you have to go through. Those with longer memories will recall that the trio featured only sparingly during the early months of their Anfield careers while they adapted to Klopp's demands. [Manchester City ](https://www.liverpool.com/all-about/manchester-city-fc)in the League Cup back in December, during a hotly contested encounter where the Reds were unlucky to have been beaten. That said, given the player's tender age, Carvalho certainly has time on his side to become an asset for the Reds. In the moment you cannot see that on the pitch or when I see him, it’s not really obvious, but I can imagine. Of course, the hallmarks of what truly constitutes a typical 'Jürgen Klopp player' are not necessarily set in stone. In short, Carvalho seemingly is still yet to convince Klopp that he merits a run in his side and, as such, has featured for just three minutes in the Premier League since October. It has been a mixed start to life at Liverpool for starlet Fábio Carvalho since his move from Fulham in the summer. Following the loss to Brentford last month, the Liverpool legend namechecked Carvalho, saying that alongside Harvey Elliott, he did not appear to him to look like a typical 'Jürgen Klopp player'. The youngster has averaged an impressive 0.37 goals per 90 during what has been a largely tumultuous campaign for Liverpool so far, having started a total of eight games.
