Model student Skipp passes Tottenham test in Champions League (The Guardian)

Pape Matar Sarr also shines in narrow defeat at San Siro that hinted at bright futures for young Spurs midfielders.

The statistics showed that he completed a team high 93% of his passes and he helped to dig out a foothold after the nightmare of the early concession to Brahim Díaz, which would prove to be the only goal of the tie. It feels as though Sarr is ahead of Skipp in Conte’s thinking, providing a better contrast to Højbjerg although, with numbers thin, both are set to be key players in the weeks ahead. Yet Skipp and Sarr more than held their own in the on-pitch style stakes and it was difficult to separate them at the top of the Spurs match ratings. Conte had counted on him after his arrival at Spurs in November 2021 but the following January, Skipp succumbed to a pelvic problem that would end his season. Skipp found the answers in the battle with Sandro Tonali and Rade Krunic and so did Sarr on only his third Spurs start. Milan has its quintessential look and so do the Rossoneri, their players arriving and departing in tailored grey suits with red cuffs on one sleeve, squad numbers on the back of the jackets and matching ruck-sacks. Skipp was a late replacement for Yves Bissouma, who had felt an injury in the warm-up. Skipp did not make the match-day 23 that night but he drank in the experience, filing it away for when he would start a major Champions League tie for Spurs. At the same time, the manager declared his faith in the inexperienced duo. The pair had started together only once previously – against League One Portsmouth in the FA Cup on 7 January – and even that was not supposed to happen. And so Mauricio Pochettino and his players would be treated to the most unusual of sights. The 18-year-old hopeful was bang in the middle of his A-Level exams.

[Chelsea](https://www.theguardian.com/football/chelsea) pressure, Fernandez flicking the ball behind his own standing leg to make room for a shot … Oh, and I’ve just learnt that James was booked in the first half, so that’s half of Chelsea’s back four who need to be careful. 49 min Bellingham slides after the ball and past Chilwell, who goes down howling. [Chelsea](https://www.theguardian.com/football/chelsea) bench pursuing him, someone chucks the ball at Sule … 60 min Mudryk has space to run at Can and he fancies himself, but he picks the wrong line, taking ball too close to man, and is robbed. “George Harrison was 17 when he and his band mates shared a room on the naughtiest street in Hamburg. [Chelsea](https://www.theguardian.com/football/chelsea) lost, but it’s no kind of reach to think they’ll be a proper side in the not-too-distant future. And in sport how about a shout for Andy Farrell being not just Wigan but also GB rugby league captain by the age of 21? but he went early and the ball’s rolling towards the goal … But the ball loops off the turf, which allows James to get back at his man, and with help from Silva, he clears. 82 min Ryerson escapes down the right and swings over a cross towards Modeste. 90+2 min “As a neutral (Liverpool fan if you must),” says Colum Fordham, “I am enjoying Emre Can’s performance this evening, always in the right place at the right time.

Joao Mario's penalty and a second goal from substitute David Neres secured victory for the visitors, their sixth in seven games in all competitions.

Jack Hendry's trip on the striker handed the midfielder the chance to open the scoring from the spot, and he duly obliged, if only just with Mignolet touching his attempt on to the underside of the crossbar without reward. Ramos headed over after Rafa and Mario had combined once against eight minutes before the break, but Brugge defender Denis Odoi saw a deflected header ruled out for offside as the first half ultimately ended goalless. Brugge keeper Simon Mignolet was relieved to see Antonio Silva head over after skipper Nicolas Otamendi had turned the ball back across goal, and he needed the help of the woodwork to preserve his clean sheet on the half-hour as Rafa's attempt hit the angle of bar and post.

Top Winners and Losers After Wednesday's Champions League ... (Bleacher Report)

Borussia Dortmund fended off a barrage of pressure from Chelsea to take a 1-0 lead into the second leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 matchup.

Havertz has not been that type of player on a consistent basis for the Blues and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was left off the Champions League squad list. The pair of mistakes put Brugge on the brink of elimination. The contact made by Hendry forced Ramos to ground, and the penalty kick rattled off the woodwork and past Simon Mignolet. The Portuguese did not receive the proper help from his teammates in attack on some moves. Brugge is in a worrying run of form with one win, eight draws and two losses across all competitions since Nov. It will be a tough task to make up the two-goal deficit in Lisbon in three weeks. Félix was arguably the best player on the field. Adeyemi's second Champions League goal of the season extended his scoring run to three games. Benfica was the only victorious side to emerge from its first leg with a multi-goal advantage. He scored 11 times in the Champions League last season for Ajax. A goal was the only thing missing from the Portuguese's performance. Haller is still finding form after he missed the first half of the season because of testicular cancer.
