Why is the Air India order such a big deal? (The Hindu BusinessLine)

The deal has the potential to not only vault Air India to the number one position in the domestic aviation sector but also spur jobs in India, ...

According to IBEF, India is poised to improve its position from the 7 th largest in civil aviation to the third largest in the next 10 years. In domestic aviation market, India is set to overtake the UK to become the third largest by 2024. With a large jump in international air carriers from India, the deal promises to make India an international hub for air travel. The kind of planes which Air India has ordered shows that it plans to increase its presence in international routes dramatically as well as ply to large and smaller cities in the domestic market. This happens to be the largest bulk order for aircraft, the second highest was by American Airlines for 460 planes in 2011. The erstwhile national carrier of India, which had been running large losses, has been trying to turn around its operations after the Tatas gained control in early 2022.

New owner drives $80bn Air India fleet expansion to regain market ... (theloadstar.com)

Air India will buy a total of 470 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing, at an estimated cost of some $80bn, and up to 80 freighters.

According to him, Air India also has plans on the drawing board to add some 80 freighters over the next 20 years to cement its freight footprint. “The government has shown policy directions to scale up exports,” Joy John, director of sea and air freight at Mumbai-based freight forwarder Jet Freight, told The Loadstar. Tata’s fleet push has now set the stage for heightened competition and newer growth strategies among carriers. Industry sources believe network expansions from Air India’s fleet rebuild will also present significant growth potential for the nation’s air freight industry, already boosted by government policy reforms and growing investment in new airport projects. Last week, AISATS, a joint-venture between Air India and Singapore-based SATS, won rights to build an expansive multimodal cargo hub at India’s upcoming Noida International Airport. And sources have told The Loadstar, the carrier plans to add some 80 freighters over the next 20 years.

Airbus A320 Neos were not available before 2026 while Boeing was ready to supply immediately,” the person quoted above said. While the rationale in the aviation industry has been to maintain commonality between aircraft types, Air India has opted for four variants in the wide body category like A350-900, A350-1000, 787-9 and 777-9. Similarly having the A350-900 and the 787-9 can alternate on long haul routes depending on traffic potential. These are fuel guzzlers and hence will be replaced by the A350-1000 as they start arriving by 2025,” the source said. People aware of the company’s functioning said that the airline, over a period of one year, held tough negotiations with aircraft and engine manufacturers at London.

Among wide-body aircraft, of which there aren’t too many in India, Boeing is the leader — both Air India and Vistara have all-Boeing wide-body fleets. The Tata Group wants AI to quickly gain market share and the mega order is part of the action plan. The new wide-body fleet especially, is expected to boost Air India’s competitiveness in the long-haul flight segment and help it emerge as a formidable global network carrier. “The first aircraft to arrive will be 25 brand new Boeing B737-800s and six Airbus A350-900s in the second half of 2023, with deliveries really ramping up in 2025 and beyond. In addition, it is leasing aircraft to expand its network and offering till the time the new planes join its fleet. After irking the West by ramping up its purchase of Russian crude, it is good optics for India to be seen as creating jobs in Europe and the US through the AI order. A five-year roadmap — Vihaan.AI — was prepared with the aim of substantially growing the network and fleet and putting it on a “path to sustained growth, profitability, and market leadership”. The Airbus deal means big business for engine maker Rolls-Royce, and will create jobs in the UK where parts of the aircraft are expected to be manufactured. Air India is also in the process of refurbishing its existing planes and trying to get a few grounded ones back in the air. The significance of the order goes far beyond Air India and India’s aviation sector. The erstwhile Indian Airlines and Air India had placed an order for a total 111 single-aisle Airbus and twin-aisle Boeing planes more than 17 years ago. This is the largest order placed by an airline in one go anywhere in the world, beating the 2011 order by American Airlines for a combined 460 aircraft.
