Super Bowl commercials in the 2023 game relied heavily on celebrity cameos but not on breakthrough, dazzling concepts.
Other ads on Sunday night contained QR codes — including one placed on a can of Michelob that viewers could scan to gain access to a Netflix golf documentary, or another for Planters that gave fans the chance to see more of a comedian “roast” of its popular Mr. Consider the one-two punch of a Michelob ad and a subsequent spot for General Motors, both of which contained promotional nods to Netflix. More marketers are dabbling in “gamification” of their commercials, says Greg Hahn, co founder and chief creative officer of Mischief, the agency that crafted the promos for Tubi. It feels like we’ve got this moment, who can we put into the ad to kind of get flash and pizazz for it.?” “I think I just wanted to see more,” says Kai Deveraux Lawson, senior vice president of diversity, equity and inclusion at Dentsu Creative. The crowd is awakened by the scene, which gave people more to think about than just buying a home computer.

What the ad didn’t do is make a case for that being a Bud Light. That just feels like their creative is stuck in the ’90s. Yet despite being one of the few ads about something that played Sunday, the goal of its message seemed muddled, a perception reinforced by details about The ads for this evangelical campaign were certainly arresting in reminding people, say, that Jesus was a refugee, and to love everyone. Hollywood will likely never completely bounce back in the streaming age, but the studios appeared to serve notice that they’re not giving up without a fight. [This year](https://www.cnn.com/sport/live-news/super-bowl-2023-eagles-chiefs/index.html), the scales tipped heavily toward celebrity talent – in several cases, thrown together in incongruous bunches – in commercials that were loud but frequently didn’t make a whole lot of sense. Of that roster of titles, give the nod to “The Flash,” which should stoke enormous interest in that Warner Bros. title (like CNN, a unit of Warner Bros. A fun idea, indifferently executed. Where were the other highlights, which were outnumbered (as usual) by the middling or low ones? Then again, this year’s crop of beer ads were mostly flat, especially given the high bar that Budweiser has customarily set for Super Bowls past. While this doesn’t include every spot that aired, if an ad featured four or more celebrities, assume it leaned toward the “loser” column.
Many articles that review Super Bowl ads emphasize a single person's opinion or a view of the average consumer. In this article, I consider advertising from ...
Another ad that is getting positive attention for its high entertainment value is [Bud Light’s “Hold,”](https://admeter.usatoday.com/commercials/bud-light-hold-easy-to-drink-easy-to-enjoy/) which converts the pain of being on hold into an opportunity to dance and drink a Bud Light. While it is easier to deliver any one of the above criteria, it is quite difficult to do all three in a single :30 second spot. The risk of course is that it doesn’t compel consumers to want to buy the product. 3) The ad engages and entertains consumers in a way that drives recall. 2) The drama in the ad is connected to the product or service. It is easy to have a funny or dramatic story that is not clearly linked to the product - and therefore it becomes a distraction. An example from this year that did a very good job connecting the drama in the story to a unique feature of the product is In both cases, the shape of Doritos and the production of Weather Tech are differentiating elements of their brands and the drama in the ads reinforced it. Many consumers are not likely aware of the ongoing storyline and if viewing the ad in isolation, it fails to link the drama to anything that is actually unique or differentiated about the product. Not surprisingly, when brands focus on the unique value that they create for consumers, they are more likely to convince consumers to consider (and buy) them. 1) The ad convincingly and clearly communicates some element of competitive advantage about the product or service. After reading lists of Super Bowl ad “hits and misses,” it’s apparent that many represent an individual’s point of view regarding what ads they liked and why.
Kansas City's supremely gifted quarterback was close to flawless when it counted, building his case as the greatest quarterback to ever lace them up.
The fact that Mahomes sees it, already, at 27 years old, might be the biggest reason to think he really could get to seven Super Bowl wins of his own. When his team needed leadership, Mahomes provided it, responding to a Philadelphia touchdown on the opening drive by taking his team the length of the field in eight plays to tie things back up. Tradition dictates that the prize-winner gets a trip to Disney World. But even that might be part of the point. The most important thing, he said, “is just going out there and playing like it’s another game”. The Eagles had 70 sacks during the regular season, 15 more than any other team in the NFL, and eight more in the postseason. This is what the great ones do, putting their troubles to one side and their teams on their backs in the moments that matter. Plenty might scorn the latter suggestion, observing that he still only has two Super Bowl wins to Tom Brady’s seven, but the truth is that comparing a complete career with an ongoing one is pointless in any case. There are moments, though, when Mahomes will make you think he can: a human tornado whipping around so fast in the middle of the pocket that the league’s best pass rush wound up scattered across the field here like debris. It does not matter who you believe the greatest of all time is, was or will be, no player will ever exist who can carry the show all on their own. None of his seven titles arrived in the four seasons when he outgunned his peers. The last sentence almost felt like an understatement but that was Reid’s point too, as he stressed the player’s humility.

This is another problem which often crops up in Super Bowl ads; in this case, the "teaser" spots — short blips of content, usually dropped early to preview the Big Game ad — are more entertaining than the actual commercial. Uber One suffers from the same problem; snagging a cool celebrity — in this case, Sean "P.Diddy" Combs — and then trapping that Big Name in a terribly unfunny commercial. Stiller's [Super Bowl spot](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ok38Xuc5UTE) is more entertaining, in part because he calls back to his Derek Zoolander character — more nostalgia! There may be no surer sign of tightening belts in showbusiness than Netflix teaming with GM to share the cost of a Super Bowl ad. But the Super Bowl ad for The Flash is so packed with compelling revelations — from the return of Zod to a new Supergirl — that it seems more understandable why Warner Bros. Miniature versions of Jon Hamm and Brie Larson find themselves in a fridge next to a jar of Hellmann’s mayonnaise. And it was — she lost the gig after her Super Bowl commercial for “Ma&Ya’s Candy Coated Clam Bites.” Together, the three sing about T-Mobile home internet to the tune of, you guessed it, “Summer Nights” from “Grease.” The song is obviously catchy, and demands for someone to “tell me more, tell me more” work well for an informational commercial. They got a makeover last year — “with less sex appeal and more Gen Z anxiety,” as a Washington Post story And what is the point of all this, you ask? But it can also be a lazy way to get someone to care about something, especially when it’s used over and over and over again.

[NFL](/nfl/)in passing yards and won the Super Bowl in the same year. - Mahomes has now won two Super Bowls MVPs and two regular-season MVPs in a five-year span. And he's done all that in just five years as a starter. After Brady won his seventh Super Bowl, it didn't seem like we'd ever see anyone get close to matching his record-setting career, but if anyone can do it, it's definitely Mahomes. And he did it IN THE SUPER BOWL on a bad ankle while playing a nearly perfect half, going 13 of 14 for 126 total yards and two passing touchdowns. Brady never did that. You want a touchdown pass on a third-down play in the fourth quarter? He's already doing things that most Hall of Fame quarterbacks never accomplished. (Actually, no QB in NFL history had ever done that before this year.) Mahomes didn't do much before the ankle injury -- he threw for just 89 yards in the first half -- so it seemed unlikely that he would be able to do anything with an ankle injury. Every time the Chiefs needed a big play in the second half, Mahomes gave it to them. The Eagles would score one more time in the second quarter to take a 24-14 halftime lead, and there was no reason to think Mahomes was going to be able to muster any magic in the second half on a bad ankle.

The Eagles and Chiefs played a thriller in Super Bowl LVII.
Two of the most-talked-about Super Bowl ads on Sunday focused on an unlikely topic: Jesus.
The Super Bowl ads are effective precisely because they're less interested in Jesus and more interested in getting us to think about our choices.
Many of the “He Gets Us” spots miss the mark, in my opinion, because, like many of us, they try to sell Jesus, when they should be trying to sell what Jesus sold: a generous and merciful way of life. The fact that each ad ends on the word “Jesus,” with the “us” highlighted dramatically in yellow, as though to say we are a subset of Jesus, is so overwrought and goofy I can just about hear my nephews and nieces in the Midwest shrieking with laughter from here. In the Catholic Church, we regularly talk about evangelization, and watch parishes and dioceses launch campaigns like “Catholics Come Home.” Much of the time I find those discussions misunderstand what they are meant to be selling. It’s to work toward that kingdom of friendship and mercy that Jesus himself was building. Jesus doesn’t need to be “reintroduced.” Trying to make him seem relevant to a media-savvy younger generation only makes Christianity seem that much more out of touch and cringe. As a piece, it is a lot less effective; the violence of the images is just too dramatic and upsetting for that tagline to land. The tag of the longer spot similarly seems to issue a call to action, this time directed at our resentments and hatreds. The first part of the tagline, “Jesus didn’t want us to act like adults,” only points us further in that direction. [about these ads](https://sojo.net/articles/what-he-gets-us-ads-get-wrong-about-jesus) and the broader “He Gets Us” campaign, which has produced more than a dozen ads like this over the last year, many of them intent on recasting some aspect of Jesus’ life, like his conflicts with authority or his crucifixion, in modern-day terms. You cannot watch that children’s spot without feeling the pull to be more kind and loving yourself. There is a white guy wearing a horned Viking helmet screaming into a bullhorn in the ear of a Black man; a woman in a car with a “Liberty over Lockdown” sticker shouts at a man in medical scrubs and a mask blocking her way.
