Ueda served on the BOJ's board from 1998 to 2005. "None of the three governor/deputy governors appear to have the (dovish) reflationist idea. He voted against raising interest rates to 0.25 percent from zero in August 2000, arguing that the bank could wait a while longer given limited inflation. "Ueda is well-versed in interest rates. Japan to appoint Kazuo Ueda as next BOJ governor - sources (ZAWYA)

Japan's government is likely to appoint Kazuo Ueda, an academic and a former member of the central bank's policy board, as the Bank of Japan's next governor ...

"What I would imagine, is that because he has been on board of the Bank of Japan, that he is relatively dovish, because just about everyone that's been on the board of the Bank of Japan has been dovish for a long time. I have been of the view for a while that probably - whoever takes over as the governor - there may not be any huge initial change in so far as everyone is trying to nurture inflation into place, everyone is waiting for the spring wage talks and the initial indications are a little bit positive, but perhaps not enough for a huge turnaround." So with him gone, the reaction we are seeing is probably one of relief that the current weak-JPY policy may be coming to an end." "This is unexpected as the market was expecing (Masayoshi) Amamiya to be nominated. "However, the apparent choice for Governor now - Ueda - is somewhat of a wild card for the markets. "It's quite a surprise in terms of the way that the candidates have have lined up. "This was quite a surprise, he wasn't coming up in the predictions at all. That removes one of the headwinds for the yen." "None of the three governor/deputy governors appear to have the (dovish) reflationist idea. "The issue will be how to take the first step toward policy normalization. "In August, he also questioned whether the Fed was a bit late in raising rates. "Basically, whoever becomes next BOJ governor, it is not the situation in which the current monetary easing stance to be changed sooner.

Kazuo Ueda Is the First Surprise of the Post-Kuroda Era (The Washington Post)

Kishida's reported pick to lead the central bank wasn't on many shortlists. For all that, Ueda may not be a total shock to the system.

Uchida, known as one of the key architects of many of Kuroda’s greatest policy hits, was unusually reappointed for a second term as executive director in charge of monetary policy last year. That step by the bank was opposed by the government, and quickly turned into a fiasco. The comparisons do have a shelf life, however: Bernanke served as a member of the board of governors before being elevated to a prominent White House job as head of the Council of Economic Advisers, when he was nominated by George W. Like the previous two Federal Reserve chairs, Ben Bernanke and Janet Yellen, he brings a predominantly academic background to the job. The good news is that Kazuo Ueda, the surprise pick to run the Bank of Japan, was on the right side of history at one critical juncture in the country’s economic policymaking — two decades ago when a majority of officials cast an ill-fated vote to lift interest rates. Educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he has most recently been teaching at Kyoritsu Women’s University in Tokyo.
