'You' Season 4 Review: A Risky Reinvention for Joe Goldberg Pays Off (Collider.com)

Hello, You. It's been far too long. Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), resident serial killer with a penchant for baseball caps and pretentious literature, ...

At the end of Season 2, we learned that Love is not who Joe thinks she is – and certainly not who we thought she was either. You Season 4 Part 1 is now streaming on Netflix. The last five episodes of You Season 4 are Badgley’s most impressive performance to date. Season 4 of You is bold and unexpected with twists and turns that are simply wicked. You is the master of twists, and Season 4 is no exception. Yes, it’s fun watching Joe scramble to pin down his own mysterious stalker, but it lacks that extra spark that kept us on the edge of our seats the last three seasons. The second half of Season 4 is admittedly stronger than the first. Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), resident serial killer with a penchant for baseball caps and pretentious literature, is back for the newest season of You – but this time, he’s got a new name, new city, and new objective. All of that said, however, Season 4 proved that You can still be good without Love because of one key reason: it finally broke its [tried-and-true formula](https://collider.com/you-season-4-repetitive/). There are certainly some standouts in You’s new supporting cast – Charlotte Ritchie gives a beautiful depth to her character Kate, who may be a member of the elite, but has an emotional backstory that balances out her initial “ice queen” act. He is surrounded by a new cast of eccentric characters – a group of friends who all met as students at Oxford. The start of Season 4 sees Joe in London with a brand-new identity: Professor Jonathan Moore, a college instructor of American short fiction.

You season 4 review: A muddled British whodunit (The A.V. Club)

Part one of the Netflix thriller's latest installment finds Joe Goldberg flailing (and killing, of course) amid the U.K. elite.

[The White Lotus](https://www.avclub.com/tv/reviews/the-white-lotus)’ Lukas Gage plays her partner, Adam, and makes the most of his one-note character. He’s not wholly innocent, of course, and finds himself in a bloody mess of his own making once again. In her absence, he’s the sole notable performer of season four so far. [Netflix](https://www.avclub.com/what-to-watch-on-netflix-best-tv-shows-1848758095) (although the streamer’s decision to split the season is a ridiculous choice), which brought new life to the Lifetime original after picking it up for season two in 2019. The hunter becomes the hunted once the real killer takes a page out of [these burning questions](https://www.avclub.com/you-season-4-burning-questions-netflix-tv-thriller-1850065317), however, which is kind of a problem if you’re breaking it into two parts. One of the strongest hooks of previous seasons was Badgley and Pedretti’s incredibly chaotic back-and-forths. American Iconoclasts of the Short Story, of course. The man is drawn to it, whether he’s living in a New York City walkup, an affluent Los Angeles suburb with his family, or a spacious London loft by himself. Still, with the number of bodies he leaves behind every time he runs, how long can this go on? He’s not a swoon-worthy anti-hero; he’s a straight-up villain. Each season provides character development and backstory as he sincerely thinks he’s trying to improve.

What happened to Marienne in You season 4? (Radio Times)

Marienne Bellamy, played by Tati Gabrielle, is back for You season 4, but does Penn Badgley's Joe Goldberg find her after all? Read on to find out.

Netflix is also available on [Sky Glass](https://www.awin1.com/cread.php?id=489797&clickref=radiotimes-1774390&awinmid=11005&p=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sky.com%2Fglass) and [Virgin Media Stream](https://www.awin1.com/cread.php?id=489797&clickref=radiotimes-1774390&awinmid=6399&p=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.virginmedia.com%2Ftv%2Fstreaming). The rest of the series is mainly concerned with Joe facing the Eat The Rich killer who also somehow knows his true identity – but will Marienne appear in the series again? But he tasks Joe with one last thing: because Marienne knows Joe is alive, he now has to kill her. The last we saw of Joe in season 3 was wandering around Paris, a place Marienne had mentioned to Joe about going earlier in the season. He has his first flashback and explains that he thought the distance he had travelled would count for something to Marienne. After seeing Marienne, he explains that his only plan was to get out of London but he's approached by Elliot Tannenberg (Adam James), an employee of Ray Quinn's, Joe's former father-in-law. He's wondering whether he did commit the murder or not and in his narrative monologue, is penning it as if to Marienne. She runs into an old warehouse building, hiding in a disused room and thinks she's hidden away from Joe, but he confronts her in the stairwell. But in fact, we learn pretty early on (as in, in season 4's first episode) what happened to her. As previously mentioned, Marienne got caught up in the Love and Joe saga – and it very nearly got her killed. Although it looked like Love was going to kill Marienne, she had a change of heart and thus, Marienne's whereabouts were unknown going into season 4. But the librarian had enough problems of her own to contend with before Joe's arrival.

Subverting repetitive patterns and finding new directions to pull Joe in is the name of the game for season 4. The second part of season 4, arriving a month later than the first, is the better half, so it's worth sticking it out in this world of the British royal adjacent. He and Joe share a love of books, among other similarities. But you know it's just a matter of time, because it's Joe. Joe is quickly entangled in business he strictly set out to avoid. Flashbacks to Paris reveal what happened when Joe first escaped the mess he left behind in the US.

Penn Badgley explains You's "new genre" for season 4 (Capital FM)

Penn Badgley has spoken about the new direction Netflix's You is taking, calling the reset a "fun challenge".

In 'You' Season 4, Joe Goldberg Is No Longer in Control (The New York Times)

The Netflix thriller's latest episodes have its antihero, played by Penn Badgley, on the back foot as he navigates the world of London's ultrarich.

In London, “not only are there people who have a ridiculous amount of money and have no idea what’s going on in the world, but they have titles,” Gamble said. “We never felt any responsibility to reform Joe, to give him a particularly happy ending,” Gamble said. It’s an evolution that Badgley is also keenly aware of: Joe is now “managing to grow emotionally, while not growing at all,” he said in a recent video interview. In Joe’s twisted mind, “he seems to actually respect her more,” he added. The stories he told himself with previous love interests, like Beck in Season 1 or Love, “stopped in those scenes with Marienne,” Gamble said. Setting the fourth season in London was, in part, a practical one: Paris would have been more complicated in terms of language and logistics. The season sees Joe “walking himself closer and closer to a self-awareness that he really won’t know what to do with,” Gamble said. Ahead of each new season, the production team ask themselves, “what kind of thriller we’re going to put him in,” Gamble said. His plans, however, are quickly scuppered when members of the ultrarich group of friends he resentfully joins start getting killed, and Joe must find the murderer before he’s framed for their crimes. (“In a more just society, we would all see Joe as problematic and not be interested in the show, but that’s not the society we live in,” Badgley [told The New York Times in 2019](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/24/arts/television/penn-badgley-you-netflix.html).) Not only is it set in London, but we soon find Joe on the back foot, being manipulated by a mysterious enemy who may be an even more accomplished killer. Marienne fled to Paris with her daughter — and Joe vowed to find her.

Review: 'You' turns the tables on Penn Badgley in somewhat ... (USA TODAY)

And in its fourth season, "You" is beginning to turn from sinister to soap opera. Penn Badgley's psychotic stalker and murderer Joe Goldberg has his own stalker ...

It doesn't help that the "eat the rich" subgenre has been done and redone on TV and film lately, much better than "You" manages here, at least in the first part of the season. The slice of British upper-crust society "You" slips Joe into this time around seems more of a caricature, perhaps a pitfall of transporting an American series abroad. A series intently fascinated with books and literature makes its inspiration well known from the outset, as Joe peruses a stack of Agatha Christie novels, searching for a formula that will help him find out who the "you" is. Of course, his life never stays quiet, and after one drunken night out with members of the upper class and a mysterious death, Joe is involved in a new crime spree and is drawn to yet another woman, icy Kate (Charlotte Ritchie, "Call the Midwife"). And in its fourth season, "You" is beginning to turn from sinister to soap opera. It might as well hit the audience over the head with a copy of "The Mousetrap."

Peacock, You Season 4 Part 1 introduces us to a cast of characters that fit a murder mystery's many caricatures and that all exist as players on the killer's board game. While mysteries are usually good fun, Part 1 of You Season 4 begins to drag fairly quickly because, believe it or not, Joe is the most likable character this season. Joe's new crew of nepo-baby socialites are entirely boring and so exaggeratedly out-of-touch that it's impossible to care that they're being killed off one by one; given that their convoluted monologues about the woes of caviar or their school years at Oxford earn them more screen time than any other characters, this is a problem. If you thought the slew of cartoonish characters ends there, think again, because we also have Gemma (Eve Austin), Roald (Ben Wiggins), Blessing (Ozioma Whenu), and Connie (Dario Coates) as aristocratic archetypes to add to the playing field. You season 4, part 1's ending explained | Digital Trends (Digital Trends)

We explain the ending to You season 4, part 1 and reveal the mysterious killer who is stalking a seemingly reformed Joe Goldberg.

He’s preparing to feed the obsession that has now bubbled back to the surface in a way he never had before: to hunt for a killer and, oddly, a kindred spirit. The sick, twisted man decides to make a game of his revenge, partly fueled by his own narcissism and partly because he’s drunk and high on numerous drugs. Joe continues to be invited to the elite parties thanks to Kate’s best friend, Phoebe, who has seemingly taking a liking to him and views him as a sort of pet project. Joe frantically manages to escape and, unlike his old self, saves Roald in the process. He also tells her the true story about Malcolm and the killer’s messages to him. Rhys intrigues Joe with a similar life story of a sordid childhood and a rise from the ashes. Wanting to prevent more bloodshed, Joe enlists the help of a student named Nadia, who has a vast knowledge for murder mysteries. They have papered his walls with old articles about the death and destruction from a man named Joe Goldberg. He’s a refreshing departure from the vapid others with whom Joe was forced to converse at the soiree. That led him to London, where he assumed the new identity of a man named Jonathan and began working as a professor teaching a literature class. Joe was determined to turn his life around, especially after running into Marienne and seeing the terror on her face over who he was and what he had done. He had killed his wife, Love, set his house on fire, and cut off his own toes to suggest he had perished in the blaze.

Although he doesn’t appreciate the company, Joe shares the evening with Malcolm and his rich friends, drinking to the point of total blackout. But seeing how Joe disposed of the body, the real killer is now intrigued and wants to know more about the professor. Joe didn’t kill Malcolm, and the culprit is probably one of the wealthy people Joe met the night before since the killer followed them after the party. To show how grateful he is to Jonathan for saving Kate from the robbers, Malcolm drags his colleague to Sundry House, a nightclub for the wealthy. After the assault, Joe asks Kate not to mention him to the police since his working visa is shaky. Bored by his mundane life, Joe is attracted to Kate and gives into his obsession by researching more about the woman. Due to his white knight complex, Joe intervenes and saves Kate from the criminals. Also, Joe is asked to get rid of Marienne, the only person that knows he’s alive. That’s because, for Season 4, Joe uses the identity of Jonathan Moore to score a job as a literature professor in a college in London. Freed from his marital ties, Joe decides to go to Europe, where Marienne goes with her daughter Juliette (Dallas Skye) to escape the killer after learning about his true nature. After staging his death, Joe goes to Paris to search for Marianne. And since no season of You can be like the previous one, the series is once again taking us to uncharted territories by giving Joe a new identity and carrying him across the ocean.

If that wasn't disturbing enough, he cut his own toes off to make a meat pie and fake his death for a clean slate (which he also frames Love for). After marrying and having a baby boy with Love Quinn (a.k.a his victim in season two), Joe moves to the suburban neighborhood of Madre Linda. After killing Marienne's boyfriend, Ryan, to get him out of the picture for good, Joe's plans to run away with her go awry when his wife finds out and attempts to poison him. But after Joe fakes his death and moves to Europe, he becomes friends with some of London’s elite class, and the script is flipped on its head: someone knows Joe’s secret, and, this time, he is the one being stalked by a killer. You Season 4 Part 1 Ending Explained: Who is Joe's Stalker? (Den of Geek)

Joe Goldberg returns for another rousing game of cat-and-mouse on You Season 4 — only this time, he's the mouse.

Eventually, Joe is shocked to find that Rhys is both his stalker as well as the killer. That’s not going away anytime soon.) And now that Rhys has his number, he’s ready to deliver a dose of Joe Goldberg justice. Once he’s back in London, the news is aflutter with the news of the latest killing … There’s never been such a disconnect in the way that Joe presents himself to the outside world and what he’s really thinking in the innermost reaches of his devious brain. Thanks to his star pupil Nadia, Joe has already read “Good Man, Cruel World,” Rhys’s captivating memoir of how he went from rags to riches, pulling himself out of a childhood of trauma and poverty and ending up in the company of high society. Under the principle of Chekov’s gun — a gun in the first act will resurface by the third — it seems that Marianne will somehow come into play later in the season. Why the detective accepted a simple image of a locket as proof of her murder is perplexing, but whatever. The first half of the season establishes the cat-and-mouse game between Joe and his stalker, even revealing the man behind the shady, disappearing texts in the final few moments of the Part 1 finale. Joe’s focus immediately shifts as he scrambles to try and figure out who is stalking him, why, and what they have planned for him in the long run. When we first check in with Joe, he’s living a pretty normal life, working as a professor of literature and spending his nights curled up with a book and a cuppa in his fancy flat. It’s a delightful twist that upends the typical You narrative, putting Joe Goldberg on the defensive instead of the offensive. I was going to ask about The White Lotus because of Lukas Gage. And I was like, "That guy from White Lotus!" When I got the part, I had a meeting with Sera Gamble, our showrunner; John Scott, our director; and some of the other writers. There's another socialite in England who passed away a few years ago named Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, and I got a lot of inspiration from her and her talk show appearances. But in London, more so in the '90s, there was this culture in the tabloids about our royal family and the people associated with them. But there was a caveat of her being lovely and genuine. So I thought she was safe. The series does a really good job of creating very unlikeable characters or making you love a character and killing them off. I enjoyed playing the upper-class-removed-from-reality character and poking fun at it. Hiding out with a new identity, Jonathan Moore, aka. Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) begins to stalk Marienne (Tati Gabrielle) again, this time in London.

Will Love Quinn Be in Part 2 of You Season 4? (Seventeen.com)

In You season 4, Joe Goldberg is now Professor Jonathan Moore and he's left every single detail of his former life behind — including his ex-wife, Love Quinn.

[Catch Up on Part 1 of Season 4 Now](https://www.netflix.com/title/80211991) Joe’s mission in Part 2 is to stop [the “Eat the Rich Killer” (IYKYK)](https://www.seventeen.com/celebrity/movies-tv/a42814849/eat-the-rich-killer-you-season-4/) before they strike again, so perhaps Love materializes to give her ex a word of advice (or remind him that he really isn’t the selfless martyr he considers himself to be). [season 3 finale](https://www.seventeen.com/celebrity/movies-tv/a42802926/you-season-3-recap/), it’s probably safe to say that Love isn’t actually alive in this scene. I'm not trying to be ‘was there a parachute under that seat in the airplane?’ She is [dead],” she told [Newsweek](https://www.newsweek.com/you-season-3-ending-love-quinn-dead-killed-love-alive-victoria-pedretti-penn-badgley-1638558). Right around 0:23, she’s sitting in a chair, an annotated book in hand, with a slight smirk on her face. He stages Love’s death to look like a murder-suicide — faking his own death in the process — sets their home on fire, and escapes Madre Linda, California, sans a couple of toes.
