India, Australia, and the start of a larger-than-life cricket yarn (ESPNcricinfo.com)

The high-profile series plays out against the broader narrative of a World Test Championship final.

[is Australia](https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;home_or_away=2;host=6;result=1;spanmax1=08+Feb+2023;spanmin1=08+Feb+2013;spanval1=span;template=results;type=team;view=results). [in Pune](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/ind-v-aus-2016-17-1030197/india-vs-australia-1st-test-1062573/full-scorecard)six years ago - is minimal. [Virat Kohli](https://www.espncricinfo.com/player/virat-kohli-253802)put out a story with the words "Sitara" meaning star, and "the future is here". [happens on June 7](https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/wtc-final-at-the-oval-from-june-7-to-11-1357809). But Australia are here and they usually have a way of [getting his blood pumping](https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/virat-kohli-accuses-australia-of-crossing-the-line-on-drs-1085719). [chewed up and spit out](https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/david-warner-gives-up-appeal-against-captaincy-ban-says-review-panel-wants-public-lynching-1348427), he is trying to be better. When Cheteshwar Pujara [plays through pain](https://www.espncricinfo.com/cricket-videos/cheteshwar-pujara-on-his-gritty-half-century-in-brisbane-in-2021-1357352), he is trying to be better. But that loss is mitigated somewhat by a feeling that these four matches could pretty much put the blue tick (wait, it's gold now, isn't it?) against [their next superstar batter](https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/sidharth-monga-breaks-down-shubman-gills-batting-technique-1357372)and [the return](https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/ind-vs-aus-ravindra-jadeja-eager-to-play-after-recovery-from-knee-injury-1357472)of one of their biggest match-winners. And considering their [win-loss record at home](https://www.espncricinfo.com/cricket-videos/india-s-unparalleled-home-dominance-1357195)over the last 10 years is 42 and 2, they'll be fancying their chances. Much more recently, he has [shrugged off the notion](https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/virat-kohli-reveals-his-mindset-and-mantra-while-going-out-to-bat-for-india-1353215)that what he does on a cricket field is what defines him. When Steven Smith yells "no run" after straight up leaving the ball, he is trying to be better. There are no absolutes except for the absolutes, one of which is time and how everything fades in front of it.

India vs Australia: Can Pat Cummins and Co. conquer 'final frontier'? (The Federal)

For Australia, India still remains the Final Frontier. For more than 50 years since Bill Lawry's team pulled off a 3-1 victory in 1969-70, it has tilted at ...

The former skipper, who has averaged less than 30 in Test cricket in each of the last three calendar years, has found length-picking too much of an ask and therefore made bowlers appear far more potent than they are. Few, if any, possess anywhere near the wherewithal, say, of a Sunil Gavaskar, who negotiated Tauseef Ahmed and Iqbal Qasim with consummate ease on a veritable minefield of an M Chinnaswamy Stadium surface in Bengaluru in what turned out to be his final Test innings in 1987, when he made the best 96 in the history of the game. Whether, in that eventuality, Australia is able to hold its nerve and poise and bounce back from a bad session or a bad day will decide how well it goes over the next five weeks. Not even the multiple visits to India in the last quarter of a century, or significant representation in the Indian Premier League (IPL), served to explode the myth and mysticism in Aussie minds when it comes to India. Australia’s preparations entailed arriving in Bengaluru at the beginning of February and having a five-day camp at the Karnataka State Cricket Association’s (KSCA) Alur facility. Apart from an isolated 2-1 victory in 2004, it has come out second best, coming unstuck through a combination of India’s near-invincibility at home, its own misgivings about this country and the gremlins of self-doubt that have germinated at the first instance of having been pushed on to the mental backfoot.

IND vs AUS Live Cricket Score, 1st Test Day 1 Latest Updates: India are looking to make a good start to the series as they look for a fourth consecutive win ...

As stated earlier, it's Test cricket time! It's Test cricket time! India and Australia have played each other in 12 series, 50 Test matches to be sure before the contest was given its current name in 1996/97. Ian Healy found an early way of absolving Australia of any wrongdoing incase they get pancaked in this series by stating that a defeat for the visitors will occur if India produce “unfair” pitches. Pat Cummins: "I think that's part of the challenge of playing away. There was the brain fade moment where Steve Smith looked towards the dressing room while contemplating whether to take a DRS or not, leading to Virat Kohli stepping just short of calling them cheats. Regardless of what the spinning wicket is like, it will always be one where Ashwin would be almost unplayable. Right, here are Rohit Sharma and Pat Cummins in their Test blazers. We feel we are really well placed. We have had a good prep for the last 5-6 days. - Catch live score and updates of India vs Australia 1st Test Match here.

India v Australia: first Test, day one – live (The Guardian)

13th over: Australia 29-2 (Smith 6, Labuschagne 14) Siraj gets a spell and Shami returns. Australians will recall the veteran India quick from the 2015 ...

“Sky” has become a people’s hero with his six-hitting in the white ball formats and after 79 first-class matches he will finally gets to pull on the Test shirt for India at the ripe old age of 32. That was a big toss to win and Pat Cummins’ run of luck with the coin has continued. There was much talk in the lead up to this series about Head’s disappointing record on the subcontinent and his plan to combat it with the all-out aggression so successful in the home summer. 3rd over: Australia 6-2 (Smith 0, Labuschagne 0) Even two wickets down after three overs, the names Smith and Labuschagne inspire confidence. His first ball of the series is wide and skids low. He pulls his head in on the last and lets it drop at his feet. He wants more of a look at the leftie and a single is sufficient from this 10th over. However Smith swipes at the fifth ball and pulls it just short of a fielder. 15th over: Australia 33-2 (Smith 6, Labuschagne 19) Shami returns and so does the Australian stalemate. 18th over: Australia 44-2 (Smith 10, Labuschagne 24) Here comes Patel, a slower action to Jadeja but all the venom comes from that final flick of the wrists. 11th over: Australia 27-2 (Smith 6, Labuschagne 14) Siraj steams in for a fifth over, this one to Labuschagne who has now faced twice as many balls as Smith. Australia have broken the deadlock now and the pace is quickening.

Jasprit Bumrah and [Shreyas Iyer](https://indianexpress.com/about/shreyas-iyer/) are also set to miss the first test of the series. Swepson is a slow right-arm wrist spinner – the kind of bowler who has traditionally underperformed on subcontinental surfaces (think of Warne’s record in India). On the other hand, Murphy’s off-spin is quite similar to Lyon’s and might be targeted by a batting lineup full of right-handers. In fact, India will be missing arguably its strongest players of spin in Iyer and Pant. While Axar is definitely better with the bat and has impressed in the opportunities he has received in Jadeja’s absence, Kuldeep offers variety as a left-arm wrist spinner. There is a scenario where all four might play, but that will require India to play a batter less and Jadeja or Ashwin to bat at number six. Also, the benefit of playing four spinners is questionable as all four will ideally want to bowl long spells. With Ashwin and Jadeja being near certainties to start, Axar and Kuldeep will vie for the third spinner’s slot. The current Australian team has as many as five lefties in its top order: Usman Khawaja, David Warner, Travis Head, [Alex Carey](https://indianexpress.com/about/alex-carey/) and Matt Renshaw. [David Warner](https://indianexpress.com/about/david-warner/) today, Australia has a history of producing top-class left-handed batters. The India-Australia test match series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is set to begin today, with the two sides playing the first test at Nagpur’s VCA Stadium. One can be certain that the pitch will turn at some point in time. This is going to be Australia’s first test match tour to India since 2017, when the hosts beat the visiting side, 2-1.

The duo removed openers Usman Khwaja (1) and David Warner (1) within the first three overs as the ball swung. Mohammed Siraj from his first delivery of the match trapped Usman Khawaja in front of the wickets. So the post-lunch session is underway and Mohammed Shami bowled the first over of the second session. Pat Cummins did win a good toss and opted to bat as batting fourth would be an onerous task on a pitch which will deteriorate as the match progresses. Behind the stumps, debutant wicket-keeper KS Bharat collects the ball in a flash and removes the bails in no time. After Jadeja picking two quick wickets, Steve Smith counter-punching Axar Patel from the other end to keep the scoreboard moving and relive some pressure. The Indian players appeal and the umpire raises his finger. The rest of the Aussie batters Peter Handscomb, Alex Carey and captain Pat Cummins will have to play their part. Ravindra Jadeja is on fire as he has now accounted for the all-important wicket of Steve Smith. So the hard work done by Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith before the Lunch has been undone as Ravindra Jadeja has broken through and picked two wickets off successive deliveries to push Australia on back foot once more. Smith punished Axar for three boundaries in one over to stamp his authority. Bowling again a wicket-to-wicket line around off stump, Jadeja forces Smith to push forward and defend but the ball goes straight through the gap between the bat and the pad and hits the off stumps.

india australia series: India vs Australia: Cricket's biggest rivals - The ... (The Economic Times)

Aussie aggression and Indian mind games have become part of the new pitch mythology, giving the game that extra frisson on and off the field.

In the wake of India's 2004 series, no less than 3,000 Indians resident in India arrived in Australia to cheer their team, a first for Indian sport. With another chapter starting, made special by the 75th anniversary of India-Australia cricket, we can expect the highest quality of cricket to be played and consumed over the next one month. [Monkeygate](/topic/monkeygate)controversy - where a verbal altercation took place between Andrew Symonds and Harbhajan Singh in which the Indian had reportedly hurled a racist slur at the Australian - these figures witnessed a sharp rise. [India](/topic/india)toured Australia in the 1947-48 season to play a five-Test series, the first tour by a newly independent India. India's tour of Australia in 2003-04 assumed great significance here, interest stimulated by spectacular individual performances from India in the Test series. Even when bilateral relations were at a low (1950-70), cricket was seen as the bridge between the two.

The bails were ripped off the stumps by Bharat, but Smith was home and there was no edge heard. Jadeja's pace is in the low 90's, that one was 93kph, then the next 89kph. What a delivery, 89kph, genuine turn and real class. Is there a plan afoot? Not sure the sweep is on just yet, if I'm being honest. Bottom edge as Marnus tries to sweep and if he hadn't got that, he'd be out. Another lovely shot from Labuschange, pushing the ball to the long on boundary. He's starting to read this pitch and this turn and is reaping the rewards before lunch. Marnus that's a wonderful shot! Apologies if you covered it earlier Simon, I've only just tuned in - India must be laughing loud and hard to themselves - definitely won the mind battles in Australia dropping Head, who has averaged >50 over last couple of summers. Surely the match referee would have something to say if that was the case? By Simon Smale

Just after Rohit Sharma clumped Nathan Lyon over mid-wicket, the off-spinner stared suspiciously at the surface. The pitch might have stared back ...

[David Warner](https://indianexpress.com/about/david-warner/) in the space of six balls; Labuschagne and Renshaw in two. He would sweep and reverse sweep to glory for his 33-ball 36, and it was he who rattled India’s spinners more than Smith and Labuschagne, where the spinners knew that a killer ball was lurking and it was a matter of pressing and probing. In doing so, he might have laid the blueprint of batting on this surface, which would progressively get worse for batting as the surface wears on and the redness beneath turns the more prominent colour. [Steve Smith](https://indianexpress.com/about/steve-smith/) and Pat Cummins. [KL Rahul](https://indianexpress.com/about/kl-rahul/) where the ball gripped and turned and clouded his judgement, originated from the surface playing wicked. Labuschagne especially looked unalarmed — he drove [Ravichandran Ashwin](https://indianexpress.com/about/ravichandran-ashwin/), bowled from around the stumps he played inside out through extra cover for three before he paddle-swept him for a four, Smith gorgeously drove [Axar Patel](https://indianexpress.com/about/axar-patel/) through the covers. They get carried away and end up getting frustrated, lose control over their plan and mess up with the lengths. He was not often, rather he was hitting boundaries off even semi-loose balls and trusting his percentage strokes and defence. [Ravindra Jadeja](https://indianexpress.com/about/ravindra-jadeja/) would later say: “This wasn’t a rank turner. Maybe, India’s spinners simply bowled better, tighter and sharper, though without any doubt this was a challenging surface to bat. Maybe, Australia were a fraction overcautious in phases in the first session. Perhaps, this was a case of batsman’s skills providing the pitch a harmless makeover.

Bit of a muddle between the India batters on ball four as Rohit runs for a single despite it being Ashwin’s call. Eight runs from the over and India are in overdrive now. 36th over: India 115-1 (Rohit 72, Ashwin 21) As the partnership heads towards 40, Scott Boland barrels in to Ravi Ashwin who is into the twenties and growing in confidence. – Rohit hooks it off his eyebrows into the grandstand to uproar from the fans. Lyon tosses the fourth one up a little more and it worries Rohit and draws a yelp of excitement from wicketkeeper Alex Carey. What a bittersweet experience this must be for Agar, to be on the field but unable to bowl. As if Covid in his Test recall in January and that golden duck in the first dig didn’t batter Renshaw’s confidence enough now he’s heading to hospital for scans! Instead, Rohit flicks the final ball of the over past Boland at leg slip and all the way to the boundary. Pujara is quickly out of the blocks with six runs from his first five balls and Rohit Sharma has rocketed along to 73. So much so that Murphy completely flummoxed KL late in the day and he popped a return catch. First ball of the new Murphy over strays onto leg and it’s easy pickings for Rohit Sharma who clips it off his toes for a sweet boundary. Australia with their tail up and the dream debut for 22-year-old off spinner Todd Murphy continues.

Earlier, in the first session, it seemed the pitch had something in it for everybody. Huge turn on the first ball, Ashwin tries to defend but it takes an outside edge and runs away for a FOUR. Mix-up between the batters, Rohit defends on the backfoot, Ashwin is almost halfway through the pitch and the Indian skipper says no, Ash survives a scare. Just one from the over Wide outside off, Ashwin opens the face of the bat and guides the ball towards the boundary. Appeal for an LBW as Ashwin gets beaten on the flight but Nitin Menon is unmoved. Single off the final ball and Rohit retains strike Australia on the other hand, looks clueless and is still in search of that elusive wicket. Width offered and Pujara slaps it through the covers for a FOUR! India has managed to score just 6 runs in the past 30 balls but won’t mind it as long as it doesn’t lose wickets. Boland continues and Carey is still keeping close to the stumps. Pujara is in at four and he gets off the mark immediately with a couple of runs.
