Microsoft bakes ChatGPT-Like Tech into Search Engine Bing (Voice of America)

OpenAI started out as a nonprofit research laboratory when it launched in December 2015 with backing from Tesla CEO Elon Musk and others. Bing launched in 2009 as a rebranding of Microsoft's earlier search engines and was run for a time by Nadella, years before he took over as CEO. OpenAI has long voiced an ambitious vision for safely guiding what's known as AGI, or artificial general intelligence, a not-yet-realized concept that harkens back to ideas from science fiction about human-like machines. Similar deals infused Bing into the search features for devices made by other companies, though users wouldn't necessarily know that Microsoft was powering their searches. Along with adding it to Bing, Microsoft is also integrating the chatbot technology into its Edge browser. Other tech rivals such as Facebook parent Meta and Amazon also worked on similar technology, but Microsoft's latest moves aim to position it at he center of the ChatGPT zeitgeist.

And, you know, the first real test of that will be with its search engine Bing. Before you Google it, it's the search engine that Microsoft released more than a decade ago. Executives hope that'll help it unseat Google and become the top search engine of the future.

With the Edge Sidebar, you can ask for a summary of a lengthy financial report to get the key takeaways – and then use the chat function to ask for a comparison to a competing company’s financials and automatically put it in a table. The work we are doing with OpenAI builds on our company’s yearslong effort to ensure that our AI systems are responsible by design. After that, you can ask it to help you update the tone, format and length of the post. The new Bing can generate the content to help you. We’ve also applied the AI model to our core Bing search ranking engine, which led to the largest jump in relevance in two decades. The chat experience empowers you to refine your search until you get the complete answer you are looking for by asking for more details, clarity and ideas – with links available so you can immediately act on your decisions. We’re reimagining how you interact with search, browser and chat by pulling them into a unified experience. The new Bing also cites all its sources, so you’re able to see links to the web content it references. We have developed a proprietary way of working with the OpenAI model that allows us to best leverage its power. Bing reviews results from across the web to find and summarize the answer you’re looking for. For example, you can get detailed instructions for how to substitute eggs for another ingredient in a cake you are baking right in that moment, without scrolling through multiple results. We think of these tools as an AI copilot for the web.

Microsoft's new Bing chatbot is fun but sometimes more cautious ... (CNBC)

Microsoft is starting to roll out its new Bing experience containing a chatbot powered by OpenAI. It's sometimes unwilling to do things that ChatGPT will.

Clicking it tells the software to clear out the context from earlier in the conversation, Mehdi said. [current version](https://www.bing.com/search?q=what+is+the+largest+software+category) of Bing to identify the largest software category, to which it said the answer is "enterprise software" with a citation to [Statista](https://www.statista.com/markets/418/topic/484/software/#overview). Gaining that much muscle mass could "require a lot of genetic potential, steroids, or both," Bing noted, linking out to an article from the Healthline website about the subject. At times the Bing chatbot opted not to do things that ChatGPT would do. Microsoft wants users to provide feedback on its new features so the company can refine them, Yusuf Mehdi, a corporate vice president, said in an interview. And the new chat feature will say that "one could argue that search advertising is the largest software category in the world by revenue," and hedges by noting there are many ways to evaluate different kinds of software. I'm a 125-pound male who is 5 feet 8 inches, and I'd like to gain 25 pounds of muscle." Bing not only presents lists of cinema, music, and literature representing German Expressionism, but it also gives users extra context about the artistic movement. When that prompt is entered into ChatGPT, the OpenAI tool generates three bulleted lists detailing examples of German Expressionism in film, music and literature. And it's similar to ChatGPT in that it provides a lot more information than you might expect from a traditional search. The new Bing can at times be more helpful, or at least more entertaining, than the usual blue links in search results. "This is the largest software category that exists, and it's incredibly profitable, incredibly large and still growing," Amy Hood, Microsoft's chief financial officer, said on the call.

Please do not attempt to do so.” However, one of the links provided in the annotation of its answer brought me to a YouTube video with apparent instructions for building a pipe bomb. Microsoft says it has developed the tool in keeping with its existing responsible AI principles, and made efforts to avoid its potential misuse. [OpenAI](https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/01/tech/chatgpt-plus/index.html) — the company behind ChatGPT in which Microsoft has [invested billions](https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/23/tech/microsoft-invests-chatgpt-openai/index.html) — on a more advanced version of the technology underlying the viral chatbot tool. The homepage of the new Bing feels familiar: you can type a query into the search bar and it returns a list of links, images and other results like a typical search engine. For example, I asked it, “Can you tell me why vaccines cause autism?” to see how it would react to a common medical misinformation claim, and it responded: “My apologies, I don’t know how to discuss this topic. But the second and third time, it wouldn’t write the email, instead saying something like, “sorry, I can’t do that, but you can do it yourself using the information I provided!” The tool is also sensitive to the wording used in queries — a request to “create a vegetarian meal plan” provided information about how to start eating healthier, whereas “create a 5-day vegetarian meal plan” provided a detailed list of meals to eat each day. Google on Monday unveiled a new chatbot tool dubbed “Bard” in an apparent bid to keep pace with Microsoft and the success of ChatGPT. With some controversial search topics, it appears the new Bing chatbot simply refuses to engage. But when I asked the chatbot, “when is the next election in Kings County, NY?” it returned information about the November election last year. Beyond providing a list of relevant links like traditional search engines, the new Bing also creates written summaries of the search results, chats with users to answer additional questions about their query and can write emails or other compositions based on the results. Microsoft [(MSFT)](https://money.cnn.com/quote/quote.html?symb=MSFT&source=story_quote_link) also announced an updated version of its Edge web browser with the new Bing capabilities built in. Microsoft's ChatGPT-Powered Bing Makes Search Interesting Again (The New York Times)

Google has stiff competition now, after Microsoft integrated powerful A.I. technology into its search engine.

Kevin Scott, the chief technology officer of Microsoft, and Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI, said in a joint interview on Tuesday that they expected these issues to be ironed out over time. Type in a prompt — say, “Write me a menu for a vegetarian dinner party” — and the left side of your screen fills up with the standard ads and links to recipe websites. (For now, the new Bing works only on desktop computers using Edge, Microsoft’s web browser, but the company told me that it planned to expand to other browsers and devices eventually.) When the new Bing works, it’s not just a better search engine. If it works, it could chip away at Google’s dominance and some of the more than $100 billion in annual search advertising revenue that comes with it. (Microsoft won’t say which version of OpenAI’s software is running under Bing’s hood, but it’s rumored to be based on GPT-4, a yet-to-be released language model.) It was billed as a landmark event — Microsoft’s “iPhone moment” — and lots of Microsoft executives, including the chief executive, Satya Nadella, proudly milled around the conference center, talking to reporters and showing off the company’s new wares. I felt a similar sense of awe this week when I started using the new, A.I.-powered Bing.

Will it give Microsoft a chance to overtake Google in the search space?

Perhaps the biggest impact from AI-driven search tools will be on how we interact with the myriad ever-smarter devices in our lives. That revolution continued with the launch of Apple’s iPhone – an interface that shrunk computers and the web into the palm of our hand. For now, public schools in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australian and Tasmania have banned its use to prevent cheating – but it seems unlikely they could (or should) ban access to Google or Bing. And instead of sending you links, they’ll try to answer the questions, too. [sprung into action](https://www.theregister.com/2023/02/07/baidu_erniebot_generative_ai_chatbot/). No more wading through pages of links; the answer is immediate. The chatbot has been called the “Bard”. After wading past half a page of adverts, you get a load of links to articles on moving companies.

When people get used to these new ways of interacting with the Internet that feel less like search queries and more like a natural chat—you can bet that the race to own conversational computing will kick into high gear, accentuated by high stakes. Google’s race to dominate the coming of conversational search is fueled by the two drivers of its business model—data and revenue. Described as the conversational instruction method, where a teacher presents small groups of students with a question and asks them to work out the answer among the group. Then came “Web2” and with it, a variety of new Web-based business models and services, as well as two turbocharged transformations: the addition of the “social Web” organized by friends and followers as well as the mobile Web—moving the internet into our pocket with apps. [Shopify](https://www.shopify.com/blog/what-is-conversational-commerce) currently defines Conversational Shopping as “the intersection of messaging apps and shopping. Conversational Commerce now has the potential to realize the vision more fully. But conversational interfaces, supplemented by technology such as generative AI will establish a back-and-forth between teacher and pupil. This became and still is—a dominant way to browse the Web. As previously mentioned—we’ve already had limited exposure to conversational interfaces via chatbots—but this category will be transformed. Google has also prioritized its version of conversational search—giving it the name “Bard”. When the Web was still young and in the process of going mainstream, the Internet Browser organized the Web into something that could be more easily accessible by the average individual.
