This leaves a trace of chosen words in the final text that can be identified statistically but are not obvious to a reader. The firm said that in tests, its latest tool incorrectly labelled human-written text as AI-written 9% of the time, and only correctly identified 26% of AI-written texts. For scientists’ purposes, a tool that is being developed by the firm Turnitin, a developer of anti-plagiarism software, might be particularly important, because Turnitin’s products are already used by schools, universities and scholarly publishers worldwide. One is ‘perplexity’, a measure of how familiar the text seems to an LLM. Edwards suggests that existing laws on discrimination and bias (as well as planned regulation of dangerous uses of AI) will help to keep the use of LLMs honest, transparent and fair. The journal Science has gone further, saying that no text generated by ChatGPT or any other AI tool can be used in a paper [5](#ref-CR5). “Why would we, as academics, be eager to use and advertise this kind of product?” wrote Iris van Rooij, a computational cognitive scientist at Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, “If you believe that this technology has the potential to be transformative, then I think you have to be nervous about it,” says Greene, at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora. Besides directly producing toxic content, there are concerns that AI chatbots will embed historical biases or ideas about the world from their training data, such as the superiority of particular cultures, says Shobita Parthasarathy, director of a science, technology and public-policy programme at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. It is one of the much-hyped generative AI chatbot-style tools that can churn out convincingly fluent text, whether asked to produce prose, poetry, computer code or — as in the scientists’ case — to edit research papers (see ‘How an AI chatbot edits a manuscript’ at the end of this article). (Even so, Carr says that when he asked ChatGPT for 20 ways to solve a research query, it spat back gibberish and one useful idea — a statistical term he hadn’t heard of that pointed him to a new area of academic literature.) “I use LLMs every day now,” says Hafsteinn Einarsson, a computer scientist at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik.
A search bot you converse with could make finding answers easier—if it doesn't tell fibs. Microsoft, Google, Baidu, and others are working on it.
China’s leading search engine, Baidu, is [working on a Chinese language bot similar to ChatGPT](https://www.reuters.com/technology/chinas-baidu-launch-chatgpt-style-bot-march-source-2023-01-30/). When asked about me, You Chat accurately described my role at WIRED but also credited me with being a running back at the University of Delaware and a professional creative. The tools they have built illustrate both the potential and the challenge of adapting ChatGPT-style technology to search. But the model sometimes combines sources that don’t belong together. Tinkering with the bot can give a sense of experiencing a more fluid way to interact with machines. You.com, founded by Richard Socher, an expert on language and AI, can provide answers through a chat interface. Asking about a person, for example, can produce an answer that combines information from the bios of multiple people with the same name. There’s plenty of inaccurate information on the web already, but ChatGPT readily generates fresh falsehoods. [reported to be scrambling](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/21/technology/ai-chatgpt-google-search.html) to respond. Chen’s new AI search tool was great at pulling up all sorts of useful information from such documents, including serving up addresses and phone numbers—but some of them weren’t real. The chatbot can provide complex and sophisticated answers to questions by synthesizing information found in the billions of words scraped from the web and other sources to train its algorithms. Its underlying algorithms don’t draw directly from a database of facts or links but instead generate strings of words aimed to statistically resemble those seen in its training data, without regard for the truth.

Speaking on the challenges and potential for ChatGPT in health care, Parsa says, “The challenge of mass adoption of ChatGPT is the same challenge of revolutionizing health care in the U.S. ChatGPT is ushering in a new phase of health care assistance in the following ways: in general; it's a complicated system that takes time to change. The process is designed to ensure accuracy when predicting what comes next in a sequence of words. ChatGPT has been known to make up references or factually provide incorrect information. “Moving to conversational systems powered through AI models such as GPT-3 (and others), which are contextualized with patient information, will provide more personalized and clinically accurate answers for patients.” In medicine, ChatGPT is a major topic of conversation among providers and patients alike. “Conversational AI can support automation and delivery of improved clinical care,” Parsa explains. ChatGPT is trained on extensive amounts of data to learn language patterns. Among these users are health care professionals leaning into AI as the near future of medical management. In November 2022 the world was introduced to ChatGPT—an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot capable of mirroring intuitive human conversation. Open AI describes ChatGPT’s dialogue features as being able to "answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests."

Google has announced they will be releasing a generative AI app called Bard, based on their Lambda AI app. Microsoft is going to incorporate OpenAI ChatGPT ...
It could be that Bard will be made available on let’s say a standalone basis at first, and some people decide to go at it, pushing mightily to get the generative AI to emit foulness and falsehoods. To some degree, perhaps this takes the wind a bit out of the sails of the Microsoft and OpenAI ChatGPT juggernaut. Strategically, a search engine provider is adding functionality to their search engine that can dramatically bolster usage and make the world want to use your cup of tea. Sure, the usual warning is that you, the user, have to be diligent and double-check the AI-generated essay. You keep running that until the targeted AI is able to essentially outdo the adversarial AI and keep itself from emitting foulness (this is not going to be perfect). There was also the use of adversarial AI techniques, whereby you pit one AI that is trying to get the other AI to spew forth foulness. They will simply be lured to the Bing search engine because it has a “better generative AI” and otherwise they might not have a clue of what is under the hood. One supposes that the phasing will be something along the line of this generative AI brought to you by the makers of ChatGPT. AI insiders will cringe that people will assume that Bing is using ChatGPT, when in fact it probably will be using GPT-4, but to those outside of the AI realm, this is a distinction without a difference. About the only solution that works expeditiously is to rapidly withdraw the AI from public access. Presumably, you could ask the generative AI to produce a recipe for a delicious meal, and have it compose the recipe without necessarily going out to do a search across the Internet. The more eyeballs, the more money goes to the provider of the search engine.
