Beyoncé has broken the record for the most Grammy Award wins of all time, after collecting her 32nd trophy at this year's ceremony. The singer made history ...

The Highs, Lows, and Whoas of the 2023 Grammy Awards (Vulture)

The 2023 Grammys featured performances by Harry Styles, Bad Bunny, and Lizzo, along with tributes to hip-hop and Smokey Robinson.

Clearly, that wasn’t even enough, after Beyoncé was snubbed in the category for a fourth time for [her earth-shaking seventh album Renaissance](https://www.vulture.com/2022/08/beyonce-renaissance-review.html). Lizzo brought a whole choir for her performance of “About Damn Time” and “Special,” with some church-worthy belting; Luke Combs showed off the vocals that got him out of his bar bouncer gig; and Mary J. The speech that followed was a rare moment of vulnerability from Bey, who, on the verge of tears, thanked her late Uncle Johnny and the queer community for paving the way for her dance history tribute Renaissance. [Vulture’s Rembert Browne wrote](https://www.vulture.com/2017/02/what-more-does-beyonc-have-to-do-to-win-album-of-the-year.html) she would “have to make an album of the decade” to win the top honor. The Grammys gave fans a bit of a warning by announcing that Quavo would be one of the In Memoriam performers, honoring his late nephew and collaborator Takeoff. Beyoncé wasn’t even there to see herself tie the record for most Grammy wins of all time because she was stuck in a limo on her way to Crypto.com Arena. (That said, [Petras gave a touching tribute to her late trans collaborator SOPHIE](https://www.vulture.com/2023/02/sam-smith-kim-petras-grammys-win-history.html), while also managing to shout out her gay mother Madonna and her actual mother.) Not that it mattered — the tribute in honor of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary was an exciting, whiplash-inducing trip through rap history, featuring the most legends you could crowd on stage in 10 minutes. [Brandi Carlile](https://www.vulture.com/2021/04/interview-brandi-carlile-memoir-broken-horses.html) found a new way to break Grammys ground this year, netting awards for Best Rock Performance and Song. Younger acts like Billie Eilish, Lizzo, and Olivia Rodrigo have been some of the biggest Grammys players in recent years, so it’s great to see the Academy carrying on that investment to the next generation. In his third year of hosting, and first away from The Daily Show, Trevor Noah seemed more comfortable than ever at the Grammys. That happened tonight, when Benito kicked things off by snaking through the audience to an equally crowded stage, with dozens of dancers and a full backing band.

Instead, the night’s most prestigious trophy went to pop star Harry Styles for his album “Harry’s House.” Styles appeared surprised as he arrived onstage, and the censors quickly jumped into action as he uttered a few shocked expletives.

Grammys 2023: If someone had to pip Beyoncé, you could do worse ... (The Guardian)

The queen of pop broke records – though not for the big gongs, again. But if the Recording Academy has a history of unexpected choices, this year's wins for ...

[Harry Styles](https://www.theguardian.com/music/harry-styles)’s Harry’s House beating Renaissance to album of the year doesn’t feel the same as Beck’s Morning Phase triumphing over [Beyoncé](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/dec/13/beyonce-album-first-review) in 2015, nor does it feel the same as if, say, Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres had won this year. [Beyoncé](https://www.theguardian.com/music/beyonce) has only ever won one of them once – song of the year in 2010 for Single Ladies – which seems a fairly inexplicable state of affairs: you don’t need to be a rabid member of the Bey Hive to know that she’s had an immense cultural and commercial impact over the last 20 years. Under the circumstances, Samara Joy – a hugely gifted jazz vocalist, gradually emerging as a significant songwriter as well as an adept interpreter of standards – feels like a worthwhile choice: rooted in tradition, but too soulful to qualify as easy listening. The weirdest success was Bonnie Raitt’s [Just Like That](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Skd0XR3twCA) winning song of the year, at least from the perspective of the UK, where the album it’s from didn’t even make the charts. Certainly they’re one of the biggest-selling groups in a field where several of the nominees didn’t even seem particularly new: Molly Tuttle’s first album came out in 2006; Tobe Nwigwe’s first EP six years ago; Muni Long is 34 and released her debut album, albeit under her real name, Priscilla Renea, in 2009. Without wishing to cast shade on those doughtily toiling away in the areas covered by the best score soundtrack for video games and other interactive media and best new age ambient or chant album categories, the Grammys are ultimately about four awards: album of the year, record of the year, song of the year and best new artist.

[a rough draft of a hip-hop chronology](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/05/arts/music/grammys-hip-hop-50th-anniversary-performance.html) that was a cavalcade of dozens of performers onstage, most spitting a memorable line or verse, and a few — like a forthright Queen Latifah and a speed-tongued Busta Rhymes — getting more valuable seconds to show off. His performance — a medley of “El Apagón” (“The Blackout”), a tribute to Puerto Rican culture amid adversity, and “Después de la Playa” (“After the Beach”), a come-on — was a carnival and a dance party. ( [The-Dream](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/03/arts/music/the-dream-muni-long-grammys.html), one of her fellow writers, spent a few seconds onstage instead.) And when Noah, after blaming Los Angeles traffic, eventually did find Beyoncé at her table, bringing her the trophy she had won, the singer just nodded politely, giving him — and the show that would go on to both celebrate and disrespect her, again — basically nothing. Stan service gone wild was on full display during the misleading — and often humiliating — interstitial segments that showed (alleged) superfans of the 10 artists nominated for album of the year spouting P.R. [“Un Verano Sin Ti,”](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/06/arts/music/bad-bunny-un-verano-sin-ti.html) the year’s most streamed album and a Billboard No.

DJ Khaled ran up from his table to the front of the stage steps to wave a lighter, and, as the set finished, Machine Gun Kelly, who attended with fiancée Megan Fox, could be seen standing on a chair, despite being well over six feet tall. After about a minute of smiling and talking, the two parted, with Swift returning to her table where she sat with her frequent collaborator, Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff. Other stars sat comfortably back in their seats, bobbing their heads along to the music. (Earlier in the night, Swift jammed out to Styles' performance of "As it Was." Here are all the juicy highlights from Sunday night.

Grammys 2023: 10 Reasons the Grammy Awards Were a Win for ... (globalcitizen.org)

This year's Grammy Awards was a night to remember where social justice, the power of music, Black excellence, and LGBTQIA+ representation took center stage.

“It’s Black kids and white kids rejecting segregation in the 1950s, and instead, blending R&B, country, and even gospel into rock and roll,” the comedian said. However, the awards saw four artists take home a Grammy in their respective categories, which had the continent continuing the celebrations. ”Sam graciously wanted me to accept this award because I’m the first What a way to kick off the US and Canada's Black History Month! It’s the harmony of human beings of different races, genders, religions, identities, sexual orientations … Black History happened on our TV screens at this year’s Grammys when Lizzo took home Record of the Year, becoming the first Black woman to win the award this century. “In the 1980s, a young Black rapper from Queens and a Jewish white kid in his NYU dorm came together to make some of the greatest hip-hop of all time. [40 million times](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8mpmNtmZ9Y) worldwide last year. [their song, “Unholy,”](https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/smith-smith-kim-petras-unholy-1234597969/) — making Petras the first-ever transgender woman to win a Grammy in this category. God bless you.” “I would like to thank the queer community,” said the performer, “for your love and for inventing the genre. Throughout her career, Beyoncé has used her music and her platform to advocate for women and girls through songs of female empowerment like “Run the world (girls).”

How Harry's House Beat Beyoncé (Vulture)

Beyoncé lost Album of the Year for Renaissance at the Grammys, for a fourth time, to Harry Styles's album Harry's House. Why did Harry Styles win the top ...

In [the new Songwriter of the Year award](https://www.vulture.com/2022/11/songwriter-of-the-year-grammy-why-it-matters.html), two of the five nominees had cuts on Styles’s album, including the eventual winner, Tobias Jesso Jr. (It’s a little surprising “As It Was” didn’t earn any hardware, but the wins for Harry’s House seem to be recognition of the album as a body of hits.) After the Academy was criticized for giving Jon Batiste’s We Are, an album without a single top-40 hit, AOTY last year, Styles’s project gave them the opportunity to be on the pulse, at no expense of its perspective. [Shania Twain](https://www.vulture.com/2022/04/harry-styles-late-night-talking-boyfriends-shania-twain-coachella.html)) and present ( [Lizzo](https://www.vulture.com/2022/04/harry-styles-lizzo-i-will-survive-coachella-surprise-guest.html)). As it faded out, Styles and his team teed up hits-in-waiting “Late Night Talking” and “Music for A Sushi Restaurant,” both of which hit the top ten. Styles had a hold on the charts as well, with “As It Was” logging a record five separate runs atop the Hot 100, from its No. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, or Lizzo stole votes from her, why didn’t the same happen to Styles with ABBA, Adele, or Coldplay?) It also feels beside the point to argue whether Styles deserved AOTY over Beyoncé — [we’ve done that with her past two snubs for Beyoncé and Lemonade](https://www.vulture.com/2017/02/what-more-does-beyonc-have-to-do-to-win-album-of-the-year.html), and the answer remains a resounding yes. Beyoncé, on the other hand, added a fourth snub for the top honor to her career, this time for [Renaissance](https://www.vulture.com/2022/08/beyonce-renaissance-review.html), a spectacular, holistic project celebrating Blackness and queerness that [many critics](https://www.vulture.com/article/best-albums-2022.html) had already declared the record of 2022. Then when the record came out in May — logging over a half-million units, the second biggest week of the year behind Taylor Swift’s debut for Midnights — Styles hit the road. [took Best New Artist](https://www.vulture.com/2023/02/grammys-2023-samara-joy-best-new-artist.html) (the second jazz BNA win in less than 15 years, if you can believe it). [On Sunday evening](https://www.vulture.com/2023/02/grammys-2023-recap-best-worst-performances-winners.html), it was a different British pop star who stood between her and her first Grammy for Album of the Year: Harry Styles. Anyone other than Bey winning would’ve been met with some level of vitriol — especially after the Grammys spent the entire night hyping AOTY, and especially after [she became ](https://www.vulture.com/2023/02/beyonce-most-grammy-awards-history.html)the winningest artist in the Recording Academy’s history earlier in the ceremony. Styles won on his first AOTY nomination, for his third (solo) album [Harry’s House](https://www.vulture.com/2022/05/harry-styles-harrys-house-album-review.html), a pleasant but too-comfortable set of songs influenced by ‘80s synthpop and classic rock.

Brutally honest reviews of every 2023 Grammys performance ... (USA TODAY)

The Grammys brought us a stacked and uniformly strong line-up of performances from Bad Bunny, Harry Styles, Lizzo and more. Here's how they ranked.

["Renaissance"](https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/music/2023/02/01/beyonce-renaissance-tour-tickets-verified-fan-presale/11162728002/) in favor of [Harry Styles' "Harry's House." [Loretta Lynn's "Coal Miner’s Daughter,"](https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/music/2022/10/04/loretta-lynn-dead-country-music-legend-coal-miners-daughter-singer/8175642001/) strumming an acoustic guitar with a bed of flowers at her bare feet. Here are the best and worst musical moments from this year’s show: [Grammys 2023 full rundown: Harry Styles wins album of the year, Beyoncé breaks all-time record](https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/music/2023/02/05/grammy-awards-2023-live-updates/11170771002/) He then dueted with Robinson on "The Tears of a Clown," before blowing the roof off with his own "Higher Ground," which featured blazing guitar riffs from country artist Chris Stapleton. The Queen of R&B looked and sounded flawless singing the sumptuous title track from her 14th studio album, performing vocal acrobatics as she stood atop a pyramidal platform in a wide-brimmed hat and diamond-studded dress. The charismatic singer, clad in a baseball cap and jeans, proceeded to get the entire audience on its feet, with artists including Jack Harlow and Mary J. But the most emotional moment came from Quavo and Maverick City Music, [who honored Migos member Takeoff ](https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/celebrities/2022/12/02/takeoff-rap-group-migos-murdered-houston-police-arrest-2-suspects/10819485002/)with a heartbreaking mashup of "Without You" and "See You Again." The Puerto Rican rapper proved why he's one of the biggest stars in the world right now with his vibrant, infectious opening number. After a sweet introduction from her wife, Catherine Shepherd, and two daughters, the Americana singer gave an electrifying performance of her "In These Silent Days" single. Smith gyrated downstage in a devil horn-adorned top hat, but it was Petras who stole the show with a red-hot pyrotechnic display, mugging for the camera from inside a steel cage. Styles swapped his eye-popping jumpsuit from the red carpet for a frilly, metallic ensemble, hopping and darting across a giant turntable with his street clothes-clad backup dancers. It was a solid Grammys debut for the country artist, who unfortunately got seated with a third-hour time slot as viewers' attention spans wore thin.

Grammys 2023: Harry Styles AOTY acceptance speech sparks ... (INSIDER)

Harry Styles won album of the year on Sunday for "Harry's House." In the 65-year history of the Grammys, only 11 Black artists have won the award.

Only a couple of Latino artists have ever won, including the Mexican-American legend Santana (2000) and Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto (1965). Kendrick Lamar has similarly lost all four of his bids for the Grammys' top prize. [nearly half the time](https://www.insider.com/grammy-awards-all-best-album-winners-2020-1), beginning with the Cleveland-born composer Henry Mancini in 1959. (A representative for Styles did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.) "This is really, really kind. "On nights like tonight, it's obviously so important for us to remember that there is no such thing as 'best' in music.
