'I've got to be honest' - What Sean Dyche said about Mikel Arteta ... (Liverpool Echo)

Sean Dyche and Mikel Arteta will go head-to-head this weekend as Arsenal take on Everton.

"Beyond that, I don't think we're quite in the same league as them financially, I've got to be honest. Meanwhile, Everton enter the second half of their season with their ever-present Premier League status well and truly on the line as they sit 19th in the table having not won a game since October. I think that's a stretch in the mark a little bit." It was the only negative response all afternoon for the hosts, who were cheered from first to last by supporters desperate for some relief from a second successive relegation battle. Neal Maupay replaced Calvert-Lewin as the Everton defensive rearguard began and his first intervention was to send Gabriel tumbling in the box, resulting in a VAR check for a penalty which came back to nothing. It was the centre-back’s first goal since joining from Burnley on a free in the summer – and his first since the opening day of last season – and ended a run of no wins in 10 matches in all competitions.

Sean Dyche steps back in time with nod to a very different Everton era (The Guardian)

Sean Dyche's sheer energy galvanises Everton with echoes of club's history evident during their victory over league leaders Arsenal.

At the end, as Goodison erupted, there was a brisk handshake with Arteta and a couple of members of his staff, a brief acknowledgement of the crowd in a few sharp claps and then he was down the tunnel. In the eighties, particularly during their Cup-Winners’ Cup success in 1985, Everton had been a pioneer of a five-man midfield and Dyche, ripping up the 4-4-2 blueprint of his Burnley days, paid homage to that. There had been demonstrations outside before kick-off and early in the game a plane flew over dragging a banner that proclaimed Everton “the league’s worst-run club”. Dyche had spoken of wanting to recapture the spirit of the eighties, which is reasonable enough if only as an appeal to the traditions of the club. Most of the time, particularly after half-time, Dyche was bellowing at his defence to push up, with expansive wafts of his right arm. Vast sums have been spent very badly and again the board stayed away for its own safety, but just because there are a lot of things to put right it does not mean that you shouldn’t correct the things you can.

The gap could obviously close to two points, but Arsenal will have a game in hand - against Everton. Arsenal have proved their credentials so far this season, and they will have to do so again. "We had loads of the ball but we lacked that purpose and quality in the final third, we generated many chances. It was another huge examination of Arsenal's title credentials but having come through the Spurs and Manchester United tests last month, this was a hurdle they couldn't clear. The Everton players - just as they did at the end of last season - responded. I want to them to understand the basics of the game." "This is not going to be a rose pathway. "It's been tough for us and for the fans and for the staff. But Everton suddenly have momentum and will be eagerly anticipating another hot atmosphere at Anfield for the Merseyside derby with Liverpool on Monday February 13. Their fans had protested against the board before the game but left Goodison celebrating a vital three points. But the energy of Everton's supporters was firmly focused on the football when the action got underway, roaring their side forwards. The minimum requirement is maximum effort and we saw that today.

"The players have taken ownership and pride in what we have tried to do this week and I value that. He has done it in a couple of days and Everton played with confidence and energy. It was disappointing from our side; we did not get the result. "I have been here when it has been rocking and it certainly was rocking today. It doesn't guarantee the next one, that is what I have learned. "I am aware there is a lot of noise. There has been a heartbeat here for many years." Sean Dyche's first week at Everton – how he set foundation to beat ... (The Athletic)

Everton have endured a miserable season but Sean Dyche has transformed the mood around the club and among fans at Goodison Park.

In his interview for the job, Dyche had impressed with his vision to take the team forward and get them out of the mess they were in. He plans to set up a phone call between the young midfielder and his countryman Steven Defour next week with a view to his former charge passing on some key pieces of advice. Expectations will be tempered and nobody will be allowed to get ahead of themselves. Collectively, this was also the most distance Everton have covered in a game this campaign. The message was that this would be a clean slate. [Dwight McNeil](https://theathletic.com/football/player/dwight-mcneil-aw0nascKPN8CLL5O/)’s inswinging cross to the back post for Tarkowski. Most of that came in the first half, but they did not panic at the break. [Amadou Onana](https://theathletic.com/football/player/amadou-onana-hRwgTNqRKqyTsqeX/), towering in midfield during the 90-plus minutes, pounds the Everton crest on his shirt in front of the Gwladys Street. It is meant as a compliment and there may be an element of truth in the comparison. It made for a shorter lead-in to the weekend match than had been usual under Lampard. Sean Dyche has already proved that Gary Neville was right about ... (Liverpool Echo)

Chris Beesley reckons Sean Dyche looks a good fit for Everton and is already getting the team back to playing in a manner that Blues fans appreciate.

It could be said that not since the days of the Catalan’s long-serving predecessor [David Moyes](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/david-moyes) almost a decade ago now have Everton really served up the kind of football that their fanbase really appreciates. When was the last time that an Everton side really played in a manner that upheld the kind of values that Blues supporters want to see? [Roberto Martinez’s](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/roberto-martinez) sides had their moments and enjoyed some impressive results during his first season in charge on their way to a club record points haul in the Premier League era. Moyes’ Everton sides would try and get the ball into the opponents’ danger areas quickly and then attempt to play their football there. [Dominic Calvert-Lewin](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/dominic-calvert-lewin) has only scored once all season but could have conceivably netted a hat-trick against the team who GQ magazine last April claimed he was on the “brink” of joining, much to the fury of Everton chiefs ahead of a survival showdown at Turf Moor, which proved to be Dyche’s final home game in charge of Burnley. Before each game at Goodison, a series of Everton songs from various eras are played on the stadium’s PA system to get fans in the mood and they often include lyrics pertaining to how the Blue boys are expected to approach the game. [Rafael Benitez’s](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/rafa-benitez) ill-advised and fractious tenure, he appeared increasingly helpless when it came to stopping what looked like dramatic plunge towards the Championship. Whatever many of us think is ‘the Everton Way’, this correspondent would argue that the Blues have veered sharply away from it in recent times. Curiously, Everton’s only ever success there also came via an Arsenal player putting the ball into his own net in the same 2020/21 season. For all that the first half of Everton’s season was rotten, time though still remains on their side. Apart from a few one-eyed Gooners online throwing their toys out of the pram over the result like spoilt children who for once didn’t get their way, few could begrudge Everton this potentially season-saving win as they finally stopped the rot. Having lost his first 10 games against Arsenal as a manager, Dyche had only beaten them once before.
