Cricket is heavy with statistics and the battle over fair usage and control of them is just beginning.
The focus for the early part of this year is to move that forward.” “Fundamentally, the debate comes back to, do the players own the data?” Hudson says. “It probably ran for the majority of 2020, just as a bubbling topic,” Hudson says. It formed part of their presentation to professional players before the start of the 2021 season and progress has continued slowly since. A megabucks lawsuit does remain a possibility: “We all get into asking what the potential value of this is for our members. It’s a topic that’s sat within our organisation for a number of years, but has felt it’s gathered pace in the last 12 months.” “We’re talking about any personal data – tracking and performance data is the classic, so in cricket it’s runs scored, how fast, where they score, all that stuff. “There’s lots of talk around litigation, but that’s not a strategy we’re really pursuing,” says Rich Hudson, the PCA’s head of cricket operations, who has led their work on the issue. It’s more than the value of lawsuits, it’s the ability to say: ‘That’s mine and I can say yes or no to people using it.’ That’s the fundamental principle.” Just as GDPR laws forced companies to seek customers’ permission before they could use their data – hence having to accept cookies when you land on a new website – the belief is that cricketers should be able to control who uses data about them. Last September, GSDT launched a lawsuit, which has now been joined by more than 1,400 professional footballers, over the use of their performance data by gaming and bookmaking companies, seeking an eyebrow-raising £500m in damages. Cricket lovers by their nature are probably more inclined than most to appreciate things that happen at a gentle pace, sporting encounters – and perhaps also stories – that unfold leisurely over an extended period rather than with great dramatic swoops and squalls.

Introducing… Emily Iveson-Pritchard, Head of Sustainability at Surrey County Cricket Club. As part of our 'A Life In Cricket' Campaign, we will be talking ...
Although we have made lots of progress in this area already, I can now feel the buzz of understanding in all the business stakeholders and the drive to create real change in so many people. Sustainability is something I am truly passionate about and to be able to focus on that area as a job is unbelievable – I am very lucky. Growing up, cricket was one of the only sports that existed in my house and at the age of about 7 my dad brought me to a cricket game at The Kia Oval. I remember being sat in the stands in front of the old click-a-clack scoreboard just being amazed at the game and the opportunity to spend time with my dad and his best friend. I started working at Surrey as a casual waitress during one summer as The Oval is about 10 minutes from where my parents used to live and I needed a job. Sustainability is so important, not just for the planet but the very survival of the human race and I find that exhilarating.

Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom believes the Irish government is ready to begin discussions on a new national cricket stadium.
"We sold out in about 24 or 48 hours. Those are numbers which other sports probably only dream about. "And what we are doing in a way is using our global visibility to try and drive the sense of being a major sport here." "The vision that we have needs to cleave very closely to Sport Ireland's and the government's own vision for infrastructure on the campus which is going to be 'world class'," he said. In November, Irish Minister of Sport Jack Chambers said the Sport Ireland Campus should be "the home of Irish sport" and Deutrom says Cricket Ireland's vision tallies with this. "The next cab off the rank for us was to ensure the degree of urgency that it was going to be developed as quickly as possible and the government's announcement around that over the weekend was obviously terrific because it means we can crack on seriously to look at the feasibility of this."
