Anwar: I offered Nurul Izzah senior adviser post without allowance (The Star Online)

IPOH: Nurul Izzah Anwar is not paid any allowance as a senior adviser to the Prime Minister on economics and finance, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"As for Nurul, her first degree is in engineering, but her second degree from the renowned John Hopkins University in the United States is in public policy," he said. "So when they raise such issues, it must be consistent; so it must be that a Health Minister is a doctor, a Water Minister holding an engineering degree, but that does not happen "Leaders from Perikatan Nasional also did not have a degree in finance when they were in the government.

Former Permatang Pauh member of parliament (MP) Nurul Izzah's recent appointment as the Prime Minister's senior economic and financial advisor has been.

"So, is it true that a health minister must be a doctor? And a water minister must be an engineer? As for Nurul Izzah, she has an engineering degree and a public policy degree. "So, I guess it does not augur well for the Prime Minister because he will be questioned over the appointment as there are many better qualified experts in economics if he really needs an advisor," he said, adding that Anwar already has a group of advisors in the Ministry of Finance and Rafizi Ramli as the Economic Affairs Minister. The Tambun MP, who is not taking home a salary for serving as the Prime Minister, also mentioned that his daughter will not be taking any allowances for her role. Many people on Twitter were critical of the appointment, as Anwar is known to the rakyat as the leader who pushes for political reformation and is said to be against cronyism, a term that bears somewhat the same meaning but the favouritism extends beyond families to friends and associates.

PETALING JAYA: A PKR MP has questioned the appointment of Nurul Izzah Anwar as economics and finance senior adviser to the Prime Minister.

Nurul Izzah had revealed in an exclusive interview with Sunday Star that she had been serving as senior adviser to the Prime Minister since Jan 3. Some have claimed that the Prime Minister's act of appointing his daughter as his advisor amounted to nepotism while others questioned his commitment to institutional reforms and weeding out cronyism, something which Anwar had been very vocal about. In Ipoh on Sunday (Jan 29), Anwar had said that his daughter would not receive a salary or an allowance for the adviser role.

Economic adviser must have economics background, says think ... (MalaysiaNow)

The Center for Market Education says it is irrelevant whether Nurul Izzah Anwar is paid a salary as the people would ultimately suffer from bad policies.

In his response, Anwar defended his daughter, saying she was qualified for the role despite not having a suitable economics background. "Nurul Izzah Anwar studied engineering and international relations and does not possess any specific background in economics or finance, a background that, while not necessary for primary political roles such as ministers, should be a must for advisers and counsellors," said the think tank's CEO Carmelo Ferlito. The Center for Market Education (CME) said the role of economic adviser requires someone with suitable background as it is not a political position.
