Since its launch in January 2023, Bondee has quickly become one of the most popular apps in Asia, topping the Social Networking rankings on the App Store in Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. Once you’ve downloaded the app on your device of choice, register your account using a mobile number and a password. It is lacking in some features, like the ability to play games with friends or do anything beyond what has been mentioned above. The last thing players can potentially find through sailing is exclusive, seasonal items, which include clothing and room decorations. Adding real-life friends into Bondee is as easy as scanning each other’s personal QR codes, but what about meeting new people on the app itself?

To keep it realistic, you might even throw in a dying plant, spilled coffee and bags of trash. You design your room from scratch, and guests can visit your crib at will for a virtual sleepover or jamming session. My friends got distracted by the dizzying variety, sharing screenshots in our group chat and matching each style to a mutual friend of ours. If you remember Habbo Hotel, you probably grew up in the nineties. Already, the app has topped charts in app stores across Southeast and North Asian countries. Essentially, you join the app to chat and hang out with your friends in a metaverse setting, all while dressing up your avatar and designing your surroundings – in 3D.

The closest thing it has to scrolling is “floating.” Here, your avatar boards a dinghy and floats through the sea. When you float, you can also get more items to decorate your space with, throw and pick up messages in bottles, and meet other avatars. Call me romantic, but that kind of makes every Bondee friend you have more special. Giving users a “space” to land on, instead of a profile, also just feels more social and less… Instead of emoji reactions to messages, the avatars act out reactions like pouting, falling in love, or, uh, farting. Aside from not showing your current and ex-situationships who you’re friends with, Bondee also puts a cap on the number of friends you can have—50. Bondee has been compared to The Sims because each avatar gets its own “space,” or room to decorate with furniture and even photos from your camera roll. Decorating my space was infinitely more interesting than figuring out what to put in a bio and felt so much more satisfying than, say, carefully archiving and unarchiving my Instagram posts to curate my feed. Here's why everyone is obsessed with Bondee (Vogue Singapore)

Here's what to expect from Bondee: the unexpected social media platform that just might be our gateway into the metaverse.

Considering how most of our private bedrooms are a visual extension of our preferences and tastes, this function broadens the scope of expression you can be granted— with your choice of wallpaper, furniture and even posters which you can upload your own photos to. From the hairstyle and length of your avatar to skin colour and facial expressions, there are ample points of variation for you to differentiate your appearance from everyone else. Whilst hanging out with your real-life friends online is an exciting and fun activity all on its own, Bondee has its sights set on the bigger picture. Where you can create your own avatars, chat and hang out with your friends and even choose to share [snippets](https://vogue.sg/philip-colbert-interview/) of your real life; the latter being reminiscent of another popular app that was all the buzz in the past year: BeReal. [screen](https://vogue.sg/accessibility-in-the-metaverse/), it’s safe to say that our virtual lives are as essential as the ones we live in reality—and Bondee proves it knows that with its crystal clear focus on the user experience. [digital](https://vogue.sg/netflix-kaleidoscope-review/) detox the past week, it should have come to your attention that there’s a new social media platform out there and it’s taking over the whole of Asia by storm.
