The A24 film from the Daniels is a smash hit that garnered 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture—and one of its starts has an idea why.

And for it to now be a movie that has shifted the world of cinema and also is in, you know, [the] Oscar conversation is pretty wild.” I think back to that all the time, because so much magic has been happening for us and we never should have been as successful as we are. And, you know, because of the success of it and all the all the good things that have come from it,” she said. And so we did that on the first day. Basically you bless the set for smooth sailing, and the directors and the lead actors—we take a big knife and we hold onto the knife at the same time, and you cut the pig from head to tail to bless an easeful shoot. The film is based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Miriam Toews. Host Young talked to Bassett last November about the impact of working with primarily-Black actors and continuing Boseman’s legacy. Based on a true story, the short film tells of former marine Richard “Mac” McKinney’s plan to bomb a local Islamic center in Indiana. When Meilin gets emotional, she turns into an 8-foot-tall red panda. It tells stories of family and love, intermixed with visuals of nihilistic bagels and floppy, hot dog fingers. Ke Huy Quan, who plays Waymond Wong, is nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

How 'Everything Everywhere All At Once' Captures My Family's ... (LAist)

In the end, Evelyn introduces Becky to her father using the Cantonese word for "girlfriend," a scenario I could only wish for myself. Because the reality for me is that my mom, the one that conveniently forgets her son is gay, let alone married a Black man — is stuck in an alternate world of early dementia where she constantly asks: "Did you eat? Evelyn questioned what her life would have been like had she not gotten in that cab to move to the U.S. The idea that a Chinese kid, a child of immigrants, would receive any form of apology from their parents is a fairy tale. When faced with the reality of her business and relationship failures, Evelyn is then called upon to fight in the multiverse. When Jobu shows up at the laundromat, Evelyn protects Becky by shooing her away from the fight, a small gesture that acknowledges the girlfriend, and an Asian nod to keep other people away from family drama. She fights her alpha father while also fighting for approval from her real-life father, who disowned her for leaving to the U.S. But in this world, alpha Waymond is the long lost (now debonair) love waiting for her — or maybe she was led to him. But this "evil" that came to be is explained by alpha Waymond, who said that Evelyn pushed Joy beyond her limits to become Jobu. When she brings her father with her to the IRS audit, the guilt of disappointing him led her to deny that there's anything wrong. But this messiness is what lies beyond the "saving face" of Asian American families, including mine; in Evelyn's case, the family-run laundromat is failing, her husband is getting ready to serve divorce papers, and her lesbian daughter is silently suffering from trying to gain her acceptance. And it's true: Evelyn is constantly fighting — fighting the IRS in reality, and various villains in the multiverse.

The former child star from "Indiana Jones" and "The Goonies" is now an Oscar frontrunner.

I think this means that I get to do this for as long as I like. When I stepped in front of the camera, I didn’t know whether I could do this again, and I didn’t know if the audience wanted to see me do this again. All I knew was that I felt happy when I was in front of the camera. For the longest time, when I was much, much younger, I was so lost because I didn’t see a road for me. And when I was dispirited, they were worried for me. So this nomination means that I made the right decision. They would always ask if there was anything they could do for me, even offering me to go up to Houston — where the majority of my family lives — to see if I wanted to do something else. I felt exactly how I felt when my agent called to tell me I got the part of Waymond. The last time they saw me up on the screen, I was a little kid. They saw me when I was struggling. When I heard the nomination, I jumped up and I screamed so loud. I cannot believe this is happening.

Editing 'Everything Everywhere All At Once' Had Many Tricky ... (Forbes)

'Everything Everywhere All At Once' has lots of bravura rapid-fire scenes that likely helped editor Paul Rogers earn an Oscar nomination today.

“So it was a lot of figuring out when we needed to give the audience a break, which was not that often.” “How to make sure that the audience was invested in these characters emotionally and that we were staying true throughout this two-and-a-half-hour film to the characters’ journey,” Rogers said of the challenge. The worst day on the movie was the day we locked (the print) and I realized it was over. Unlike the rest of the industry, Rogers said, “I had this really wonderful project that I cared about with my friends who I could get on a Zoom (call) and talk to every day and then keep my mind off the world by focusing on the story. Unlike the start-slow-and-build approach of many action films, Rogers said EEAAO took a different approach, launching at an explosive pace, before ending, more or less, with a scene featuring two rocks “talking” in the forest. “He gave me a lot of good advice in general, but one of the pieces he gave me was at the very beginning: don't think big picture, because you'll drown, you'll get overwhelmed,’” Rogers said. “But I think being there and seeing the kind of love for other actors and other directors that was just being shown amongst colleagues and friends, that cynicism started to wash away the more that I was there, and the more that I saw that genuine celebration of a lot of people's hard work and sacrifice and histories. And it was clear to me in our making of it, it was like a joke amongst us of like, wouldn't that be funny? “But I was lucky,” Rogers said. “Actually the first person that really mentioned it to me was (lead actor) Ke (Huy Quan) after we did the friends and family screening. Early on, they talked through the script with Rogers, “to workshop it, without any kind of presumption of involvement on my part.” “And I think that was clear in the (spring timing of the) release of it.
