Playing predominantly as a defensive midfielder, Perrone will stay in Manchester but is unlikely to feature and compete against Rodri and Kalvin Phillips for a spot in Guardiola’s XI, who are currently second in the Premier League table. Perrone, currently competing in the South America Under-20 Championship with Argentina, is understood to have made it clear that he didn’t want to be loaned out by any of the clubs interested in his services and will therefore remain at the Etihad Stadium for the rest of the current season. City will pay a fee of around €9million (£7.9m) for the 20-year-old, who arrives on a five-and-a-half-year deal until June 2028.

Manchester City have signed Argentine midfielder Maximo Perrone from Velez Sarsfield on a contract until 2028, the Premier League club said on Monday.

City are second in the Premier League, five points behind Arsenal, having played a game more than the London side, who they play in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday. Perrone is currently playing in the Under-20 South American championship and at City will join compatriot and World Cup winner Julian Alvarez, who arrived in Manchester last year.
