Construction of Cross Island Line begins, with 12 stations in Phase 1 (CNA)

SINGAPORE: Construction of Phase 1 of the Cross Island Line (CRL) – Singapore's eighth MRT line – began on Wednesday (Jan 18).

All rail and road works will take place concurrently where possible. Productivity is further increased through platforms such (as) computer simulations of different operating scenarios at the Changi East Depot,” said LTA. This will be the case, for example, at the intersection between Teck Ghee station and the North-South Corridor, as well as at Loyang station and Loyang viaducts. Additionally, construction of the CRL will be done in “close proximity to densely built-up spaces”, and ensuring minimal disruption to residents, roads and existing rail lines is “a tall order and a complex undertaking”, noted Mr Iswaran. “Special machines and added precautions will be needed, to ensure the safety of our workers, the stability of the ground and the integrity of adjacent buildings.” As the CRL traverses the entirety of the island, construction will “test the professional mettle of our engineers and all our partners”, noted Mr Iswaran.

Large-diameter tunnel-boring machines will be used to construct parts of the CRL, such as the stretch that connects Aviation Park station and Loyang station. The depot, like MRT stations along the upcoming Jurong Region Line, will be fitted with photovoltaic solar panels to generate renewable energy for its operations. Iswaran said that with the CRL, the time taken for a Sin Ming resident to travel from Bright Hill to Pasir Ris East is expected to be cut by more than half, from 80 minutes to 30 minutes. The construction of the CRL has been split into three phases. This is a 2km stretch of road that is integrated with bus lanes, wider footpaths and dedicated cycling paths or shared paths. Besides connecting commuters to the new MRT station, the Transit Priority Corridor will also link residents in the Sin Ming area to Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park.

He cited the example of reduced travel time for a Sin Ming resident going from Bright Hill to Pasir Ris East. This 2km stretch includes a dedicated bus lane, wider footpaths, and cycling paths. According to LTA, the CRL will be Singapore's eighth MRT line, and the longest of the fully-underground MRT lines.

In the initial stages, the CRL will use six-car trains, which will be housed at Changi East Depot. The Operations Control Centre and maintenance facilities for up to 70 CRL trains will be there. As such, the CRL will eventually be able to fit eight-car trains instead of the six-car ones in use elsewhere, to accommodate the larger ridership in future. There will be an expected daily ridership of 600,000 when Phase 1 opens in 2030, which will increase to more than 1 million with the other phases. At Bright Hill station, there will also be a connection to the Transit Priority Corridor (TPC) along Sin Ming Avenue. The CRL will make it so that eight in 10 households have an MRT station within a 10-minute walk, Mr Iswaran said.

Speech by Minister for Transport Mr S Iswaran at the Cross Island Line Phase 1 Ground-breaking Ceremony (Ministry of Transport)

Thank you for joining us today to mark the start of construction of Phase 1 of the Cross Island Line. 2. Just last week, we broke ground for the Jurong Region Line. In the span of a fortnight, we have commenced construction on over 50km of rail lines.

Together, let us all build a transport system that we can continue to be proud of, one that will serve the needs of all Singaporeans for many generations to come. While we look forward to the addition of CRL and other lines, the resilience of our rail network does not just depend on building newer and longer rail lines. As for the other three core systems – the renewal of the power supply system is more than 80% complete, having replaced 1,050km of cables and the equipment at 63 stations and power substations. Special machines and added precautions will be needed, to ensure the safety of our workers, the stability of the ground, and the integrity of adjacent buildings. This will be the case, for example, at the intersection between Teck Ghee station and the North South Corridor, and at Loyang station and Loyang Viaducts. Hence, construction of the CRL will need to navigate a maze of utilities, telecommunication cables and foundation piles. The Pasir Ris CRL station will hold the new record of the deepest station in Singapore, at 47m underground. One of the largest Tunnel Boring Machines ever deployed in Singapore will be used at various stretches of the CRL tunnels, such as the portion between Defu and Tampines North stations. The CRL will certainly test the professional mettle of our engineers and all our partners. As our eighth MRT line, the Cross Island Line will strengthen the connectivity between the eastern, western, and north-eastern parts of Singapore. For example, the travel time of a Sin Ming resident from Bright Hill, where we are, to Pasir Ris East, will be more than halved from 80 to 30 minutes. In the span of a fortnight, we have commenced construction on over 50km of rail lines.
