'The Last Of Us' star Bella Ramsey reveals she's gender fluid (NME.com)

'The Last Of Us' star Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie in the new HBO video game adaptation, has revealed that she is gender fluid.

HBO Max is not currently available in the UK. NME is supported by you. “Gamers have been burned before by poorly conceived adaptations of their favourite titles, so they were naturally skeptical. But in terms of pronouns, I really couldn’t care less.” Most recently, Ramsey starred in 2022 medieval comedy film Catherine Called Birdy, which was directed by Lena Dunham. But I knew that if someone called me ‘he,’ it was a bit exciting.”

Lena Dunham, who directed Ramsey in the excellent 2022 comedy Catherine Called Birdy, told me in an email interview, “I know every director who works with Bella never wants to let her go.” She added, “I consider Bella a true lifelong friend, and was amazed because I went in determined to be a force for good in her life as the older and ‘wiser’ one, and Bella quickly proved to me that her own wisdom was all-encompassing.” “They can do as many games as they like, as many series as they like, and I’ll be here, flying back out to Canada.” She’s already watched gameplay from Part II, which features an older, more violent version of the Ellie we meet in the original. “Forever,” she tells me, when I ask how long she’d be willing to commit to The Last of Us. Despite the genuine joys of self-discovery she experienced on the set of The Last of Us, Ramsey, who uses she/her and they/them pronouns interchangeably, is still hesitant to affix herself with labels. “All the fear goes away; all the panic goes away; all the stress goes away,” he says. (Today, she says her faith has transformed into something less church-directed and into “one that [is] totally my own,” though it is still “a fundamental part of my life.”) But she knew the time had come to stop denying herself. “It took a long time, actually, for me to accept that I was Ellie, and that I could be her and that I was the right fit. In interviews and at work, she exudes an energy that one of her Last of Us scene partners, Euphoria's Storm Reid, calls “cool, calm, and collected.” Mazin says it’s something of a vanishing act. It was during production in Canada that Ramsey turned 18—on a day off, much to her chagrin—and it was while making The Last Of Us that she underwent a diagnosis process to learn she’s neurodivergent. “I guess that’s the first time that I ever felt something was shifting in my life.” She started online homeschooling soon after, and continued to film two additional seasons of Thrones, far more screen time than showrunners David Benioff and D. “I never really was an anxious kid,” she says of her youth in Leicestershire, England, where she joined an amateur theater group at the age of 3. Mazin and Druckmann met with Ramsey over a Zoom callback, for which Ramsey says she prepared with a vicious treadmill walk, during which she repeatedly muttered one of Ellie’s beloved curse words—in this case, “Motherfucker.” From there, Ramsey officially clinched the role, and Mazin had his Ellie.

“There was a time I was so anxious, I couldn’t leave the house,” she said. Ramsey has never been much of a gamer, but she was aware of “The Last of Us” when her agent emailed an audition script and Ellie’s character description. “For the year we were shooting in Alberta, it was primarily the two of us, with other actors and directors coming and going,” he wrote in an email. Instead, the actor watched YouTube clips of significant gameplay scenes, she said, in order “to feel confident that the Ellie I felt inside of me, under my skin, was the right one.” “It was very brief and special,” Ramsey said of their initial meeting. “I don’t know what relaxing is, and I’ve never been very good at it,” she said. Now, if she sees “nonbinary” as an option on a form, she will tick it. “We were looking for a specific combination of contradictions: Someone that can be funny and quirky, and violent and rough,” Druckmann, who also led development of the game, said in a phone interview. Ramsey has been a working actor since she was 11, when she signed on to “Game of Thrones” and made a memorable professional debut as headstrong house leader Lyanna Mormont. “I guess my gender has always been very fluid,” she said. “She would push through occasional bouts of self-doubt, anxiety or panic and rise above it,” he wrote in an email. “The Last of Us,” however, brings Ramsey’s biggest role to date.

Known for playing darker characters such as Ellie Williams, the young actress proves she can also do comedy. catherine-called-birdy-bella-ramsey-featured ...

In Catherine Called Birdy, we are finally able to see her thrive in an environment free of zombies and whatnot, with a production design and cinematography that favor bright colors instead of darker tones. Here’s to a long career for Bella Ramsey, with lots of characters like Lyanna Mormont and Ellie Williams, but also lots of Birdys! If Lyanna Mormont became a beloved character and one of the few good things in the final seasons of Game of Thrones, it’s all because of Ramsey and her ability to find the right tone. One performance that is particularly worthy of note when it comes to how it complements Ramsey’s and vice-versa is that of Lesley Sharp, who plays Birdy’s nursemaid Morwena. As viewers, we are supposed to side with Birdy and enjoy her shenanigans, and it would be a real shame if someone less skilled than Ramsey were to take over the part and ruin the experience. The problem is that Birdy isn’t the least bit interested in being taken by any wealthy lords and does everything in her power to scare them away. Now, in order to keep the family afloat, Rollo is trying to marry off his only daughter to any wealthy lord that will take her. Throughout the movie, she manages to convey all the energy, street smarts, and inventiveness of her character in a delightful way. It’s Christina Ricci’s Wednesday Addams stating that she has only murder in mind or, to stick with Game of Thrones, Maisie Williams’ Arya Stark saying that the correct way to use a sword is to “stick them with the pointy end.” It’s threatening, it’s adorable, it’s perfect. She’s loud, messy, and constantly making jokes, and though it is pretty clear that the adults in the film find these traits to be less than charming, it would be a disaster if audiences were to agree with them. [Game of Thrones](https://collider.com/tag/game-of-thrones/), none of us would’ve guessed that, just seven years later, she would be fighting to survive the apocalypse alongside [Pedro Pascal](https://collider.com/tag/pedro-pascal/) in HBO’s adaptation of [The Last of Us](https://collider.com/tag/the-last-of-us/). It's a fable about learning to find happiness even in the direst of circumstances and fighting for your rights.

Bella Ramsey Proves The Ellie Casting Backlash Wrong (Screen Rant)

HBO's The Last of Us faced some backlash for casting Bella Ramsey as Ellie, but the show's first episode proved this backlash wrong almost instantly.

[a Last of Us game character](https://screenrant.com/last-of-us-show-game-characters-confirmed-explained/) — also showcases the other part of Ellie's personality that makes her character so beloved: her innocence. This involves Marlene returning Ellie's belongings, with Ellie immediately clutching her switchblade, showing off the aforementioned temperamental nature of the character. Ellie is told to count from one to 10 slowly and clearly, which she completely rushes through in a way that is clear she is done with their endless tests, complete with flipping off the Firefly after the test is finished. Kaitlyn Dever and Elliot Page are some of the more popular choices due to their similar looks to Ellie's game design. The Last of Us centers on Joel and Ellie, thrusting the two together in a post-apocalyptic America for a mission bigger than anything they have ever known. Ramsey is best known for her role as Lady Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones seasons 7 and 8.
