We are all agreed that our current league position must and will improve.” Everton is in the relegation zone having made a poor start to the season, losing 10 of 19 matches under manager Frank Lampard, the latest defeat coming at home against Southampton. “This is an unprecedented decision,” a club spokesperson said in the statement. Everton said the directors had “reluctantly accepted” the advice to miss the match after the club had received “malicious and unacceptably threatening correspondence,” in addition to “targeted physical aggression” at recent home matches.

Everton Lose To Southampton (Everton Football)

Amadou Onana's first Everton goal was not enough as a James Ward-Prowse double condemned the Blues to a 2-1 defeat at Goodison Park.

It nearly came in four minutes of added time as Gordon cut back from the byline, Bazunu punched out and Tarkowski’s goalbound shot was deflected behind by Walker-Peters. Another Southampton counter ended with substitute Anthony Gordon being penalised for a barge on the edge of the area and Ward-Prowse sent the free-kick over the wall and into the net. Ward-Prowse was not to be denied seconds after the restart, however. With Iwobi back, there was concern Everton would lose a different player to injury just seconds into the contest when Ben Godfrey went down after making a clearance. A winning goal felt inevitable. The Blues couldn’t capitalise on Gray’s whipped free-kick from 20 yards, however. Both teams pushed for a winner to ignite their seasons, leaving spaces at the back and it needed a solid block from Coady to deny Adams as he shot from the right edge of the area. Instead of 2-0, it was so nearly 1-1 with nearly the last kick of the first half, Southampton’s fast counter ending with Ward-Prowse placing a low shot into the bottom left-hand corner that Pickford did superbly well to tip on to the post and out for a corner. First, the 26-year-old jinked one way and then another to earn a corner off Walker-Peters and, as he whipped in a teasing set piece, Onana was on hand to plant home a header from 10 yards out for his first Blues goal. The best move of the early stages came on 20 minutes as Mykolenko slid through a pinpoint pass to Gray on the left edge of the area, where the in-form forward took the ball past keeper Gavin Bazunu and squeezed his finish over from a tight angle. Iwobi was in the thick of the early action and, on 10 minutes, he threaded a ball to the right wing for Seamus Coleman to do well to turn Kyle Walker-Peters and get dragged down by the defender. Everton: A broken football club (The Athletic)

It was a toxic atmosphere at Goodison as Everton slipped to another loss, with the board of directors told not to attend for their safety.

Others, such as Gordon, had been instructed not to stop and young striker [Ellis Simms](https://theathletic.com/football/player/ellis-simms-JTkz1KK1Gd56bDBg/), recalled from a loan at [Sunderland](https://theathletic.com/football/team/sunderland/) in a desperate bid to add firepower, looked shell-shocked as he drove through the same maelstrom. [Yerry Mina](https://theathletic.com/football/player/yerry-mina-ffsXRLMcYtrnA5xy/), an unused substitute, as he drove away from the ground later. The belief that this game would represent a much-needed turning point started to fade and it ebbed even faster when [Anthony Gordon](https://theathletic.com/football/player/anthony-gordon-XWTlQLC5wKZFGPRN/), brought on to provide attacking threat, conceded a brainless free kick in the sort of area a specialist like Ward-Prowse craves. [James Ward-Prowse](https://theathletic.com/football/player/james-ward-prowse-jorBuYFJn6c29bUM/) levelled so easily just after half-time, the mood in Goodison started to turn. [Alex Iwobi](https://theathletic.com/football/player/alex-iwobi-zJvlNcTBesoxCAqk/) to the starting line-up despite sustaining what appeared to be a serious ankle injury at Old Trafford should have offered an uplift. Everton later confirmed they are liaising with Merseyside police around the overall security threats, but that no formal complaint around a specific incident had yet been made to the force. Lampard appeared later than usual to face the media with an apology and stoicism that underline his qualities as a person. It is perhaps too early to judge the wisdom of signing Some of the anger against Everton’s board, particularly chairman Bill Kenwright and chief executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale, has vaulted rather than crossed the line of acceptable criticism. It was only matched the last time they were relegated in 1951. Opposition manager Nathan Jones afterwards compared the contest to a Championship game with its physical nature. That’s 10 defeats in all competitions for Everton from their last 13 games.

‘We got a goal straight after half-time and felt that was the turning point.’ This is certainly a brutal situation for Everton, one that seems entirely of their own making. This is a time for character and resolution, but as those chants rained down it was impossible not to detect how startled those in blue were. Their current tally of 15 is their lowest ever at this point. For a few moments, fury towards the board was put on hold and redirected at the players.
