Newcastle United beat Leicester City to reach first League Cup semi ... (Eurosport.co.uk)

Newcastle United progressed to the League Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1976 thanks to a 2-0 win against Leicester City at St James' Park.

That is the type of chance Vardy has scored over and over in his career. 60' GOAL - NEWCASTLE UNITED - Newcastle finally find the breakthrough! Joelinton finds himself in acres of space, cuts into the box from the right and sees his effort strike the post. He was at the heart of everything good the Magpies did, always looking to get on the ball and dictate proceedings. Leicester had to ride their luck but they weathered the storm well and began to grow in the game. The way for that to happen is simple, Newcastle have to end their trophy drought and tonight they took one giant leap towards doing that.

League Cup Match Report: Newcastle United 2 - 0 Leicester City (Fosse Posse)

The Foxes were fortunate not to be behind on just 45 seconds. The Geordies' counterattack carved open the Foxes' defence as Miguel Almiron carried the ball half ...

With the entire goal to aim at and ages to do it, he slid the ball wide. It was just a third of an hour playing out the match with the Foxes already beaten. The former Newcastle striker slid it to the unmarked Vardy in the centre. The Belgian tried the same thing, he also failed, and it bounced to Dan Burn. Almiron received the long throw and just slid it into the path of Joelinton, who outraced Albrighton and finished calmly. That worked about as well for us as you’d imagine, but Ward was able to deflect the few shots that were on-target and see us through to halftime at nil-nil. It didn’t do anything change the run of play, as the Geordies doubled their lead in almost equally silly fashion. He got the angle wrong, and the ball stayed in play, but it fell to Castagne. His snapshot was on-target, but Ward did exceptionally well to turn it wide of the post. He curled the ball to Daka who had only keeper Nick Pope to beat. The Foxes were fortunate not to be behind on just 45 seconds. His cross found Sean Longstaff alone at the far post, but he somehow put the ball over when just letting it carom off of him would have resulted in a goal.

Newcastle dreaming of long-awaited silverware after League Cup ... (The National)

Boyhood fan Dan Burn set Newcastle on the road to their first League Cup semi-final for 47 years with his first goal for the club as stubborn Leicester ...

We gave away two soft goals. The 6’6” full-back burst into the penalty area from the left after the Foxes had conceded possession cheaply and fired across Ward and inside the fire post to send the home crowd into raptures. Guimaraes missed the target once again after Willock and Joelinton had linked well down the left, and it took a fine reaction save by Ward to deny Longstaff after his defence had failed to clear Trippier’s 19th-minute free-kick.
