Man Utd v Everton FA Cup Preview - GrandOldTeam (Grand Old Team)

All the hallmarks were there. Six weeks off and enticed back with misplaced optimism? Check. 94th minute losing goal against bottom of the league on a cold ...

Check. And that’s a match preview of sorts. I don’t hate our players, hate is too strong a word reserved for the likes of the politicians and poor faith actors oppressing pain on the people around me. Still, they’ve had more success than my godforsaken team and they occasionally sign nasty songs so, for the purposes of performative rage and parochialism, I’ll despise them on this first Friday evening of 2023. May this whole fucking shit show of a corporate grab league get to fuck and we have a competitive game once again with players, managers, owners that sit in some sort of sync with the fans and the communities their clubs have represented since the year eighteen fucking something. Make something real, something relatable to Evertonians, something at least competent and reflective of the values its fans hold dear. No 120 points, no starting again, no judging at the end of the transfer windows. And take the others with you. Everton in this instance being more than a football club or a sanctioned oligarch and his accountant’s ego thing, but a community, a heritage, a bond between family and friends, a weekend stronghold and – to some – an ethos, a way of life. Not salt in the wounds, but sulphuric acid. Just so the pain of crushing disappointment can be more raw. If one were to study Everton for any length of time it would lead to a deeply distrusting affliction that pervades the mind and senses and leaves one in a perma state of rage and delirium.

FA Cup third round: 10 things to look out for this weekend (The Guardian)

Another Manchester City and Chelsea clash, plus Wrexham, Chesterfield and Boreham Wood flying non-league flag.

The United he has constructed can play on the break and in possession and despite the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho being unavailable for selection, is able to rotate personnel and still win. In the last round, Boreham Wood travelled to the Memorial Ground and knocked out Bristol Rovers, currently sitting nine places clear of Accrington in the League One table. Mid-table in the National League and through to the third round for the third consecutive season, Boreham Wood are the lowest ranked team left in this season’s FA Cup and might have hoped to welcome more glamorous opposition than Accrington Stanley. Danny Cowley, a manager perhaps even more animated on the sidelines than the Italian, would have been Conte’s opposite number only to be sacked in midweek as a team expected to be competing for promotion from League One languishes in mid-table. A huge giantkilling, it came to be recognised as the first of many dominos to fall in the subsequent decline, a financial meltdown that led to the phrase “doing a Leeds” entering the football vernacular and the club itself entering League One at the lowest ebb of their 16-year absence from the top flight. But with the World Cup star offering an enticing solution to Liverpool’s problems on the left flank – and needing game-time to shake off the Qatar rust – a weary Wolves in the FA Cup provides an ideal opportunity for Anfield to welcome its latest recruit. At 18 years and 76 days, Ferguson Jr scored and supplied an assist on his first start at Goodison, the second-youngest to do so in the Premier League after Michael Owen in 1997. In apparent financial meltdown off the pitch but in form on it, West Brom travel to Derbyshire to take on Chesterfield, currently battling to win promotion from the National League during their fifth year in non-League purgatory. Beating Coventry, 14th in the Championship, and reaching the fourth round would be a highly significant storyline for the National League club’s owners to bask in. [FA Cup](https://www.theguardian.com/football/fa-cup) in 2016, a raft of injuries, a packed schedule and the need to prioritise a looming Champions League match and the League Cup final compelled Manuel Pellegrini to field five teenagers for full City debuts at Stamford Bridge. While the FA Cup is unlikely to feature prominently on Jesse Marsch’s list of priorities, any failure to take his first ever match in the competition seriously will not be tolerated by Leeds fans travelling to the Cardiff City Stadium. To nobody’s surprise, his callow side was walloped by their far more experienced hosts and Pellegrini went on to be replaced by one of the few Premier League or Championship managers who treat the world’s oldest cup competition with the utmost respect and seriousness.

Webb 2.0: Chesterfield and the link to a stolen FA Cup winner's medal (The Guardian)

National League side, who face West Brom in third round, have 1970 Cup hero David Webb's son Danny as assistant manager.

It is fair to say Croot has seen his fair share of highs and lows since his association with the club began in 1978 as a programme seller at Saltergate, yards from his secondary school. During the 1998 World Cup some Japan fans approached a group of Chesterfield supporters having spied the club crest and after reuniting at the 2002 World Cup held in South Korea and Japan the Tokyo Spireites were born. “When the Trust took over the club, it was in a really dark place. It felt like the club was going into oblivion. But it’s not as if we’re going from 2,500 to 10,000 and the players are going to go: ‘Bleeding hell, what’s this?’” It was a different time but the passion of the game would be the same if you got a big final nowadays.” Chelsea would like put them in their museum but I think Dad wants to keep them to himself for the next few years.” Webb and Gary Roberts, the former Chesterfield midfielder who returned to the club in April as first-team coach, visited the Hawthorns on Monday to take in West Brom’s win over Reading. “He put a brave face on but it was horrible for him. “The first thing Dad checked was the medals,” says his son Danny, now assistant manager at David, a former defender, won the FA Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup with Chelsea but his silverware was stolen. When David Webb, while manager of Southend United, returned home from a family friend’s New Year’s Eve party in the early 90s, his heart sank as it quickly dawned on him that he had been the victim of a burglary.

FA Cup third-round talking points: Chelsea face imperious ... (Sky Sports)

Kai Havertz adorned the matchday programme for Chelsea's Premier League clash with Manchester City on Thursday and it was a reminder of his famous winner in ...

Liverpool have not had the best recent record against Wolves in recent FA Cup meetings, and they will be only too aware that it takes one moment to knock a team out. Welcome to the FA Cup third round where the biggest of giant-killings can happen. The Toffees are in a spiral and Friday's FA Cup trip to Manchester United will not provide the board with welcome respite. Indeed, Wolves have eliminated Liverpool in five of their seven FA Cup ties, including two under Jurgen Klopp - doing so again in the 2018/19 season. He has reinvented himself at St James' Park and earned the adoration of the fans with the speed of the club's transformation. The FA Cup visit of League Two Stevenage could just be the perfect opportunity. He has not started a game since the 2-0 loss to Newcastle in May. And that makes Chelsea's task of trying to break their losing run against City in the FA Cup this Sunday all the more difficult. Perhaps Havertz can come up with a special moment to stun Man City once more, as he did in that Champions League final... They will have to keep Erling Haaland quiet again and bring their youthful energy and intensity in midfield once more - but Potter can't magic up a more clinical attack and that looks to be where Chelsea's progress could come unstuck again. A lot has changed since that night - and this week's defeat means Chelsea have now lost four on the spin to City without scoring since that final. Mason Mount had missed the fixture entirely after picking up a knock in training and while there is hope he could be back in time for the weekend, Graham Potter's options look limited in comparison with what Pep Guardiola can call upon.

Varane and Antony also ome into the side, with Van de Beek, Maguire, Lindelof and Wan Bissaka dropping out. One of football's greatest venues. With a wet deck and plenty of rain, I'd expect plenty of agricultural tackles and heat to be generated from the players in this one. But it is the first time they're colliding in the third round of the competition, and the earliest since a second round tie in 1908-09. They've been eliminated before the quarter-finals a staggering 62.7% of the time, but the Toffees did reach the quarter-finals in both of the last two tournaments. He beat them twice and drew once as a player, and then beat them in the semi-finals of the 2019-20 competition with Chelsea, although he went on to lose the final to Arsenal. For the Toffees, it's a defensive team that will be on show tonight, with Godfrey, Coady and Tarkowski all in the side, although it remains to be seen how they will line-up on the pitch. Three full-backs in the side for United - you'd expect that one of them will be filling in at centre-back with Varane, with Maguire and Lindelof both out the team. A whopping 209 meetings between these two in the past - 12 of those of course coming in this competition in the past.

Marcus Rashford starred as Manchester United kicked off the FA Cup weekend with a 3-1 defeat of Everton. More to come including Manchester City vs Chelsea.

(AE) Per the report both Werner and De Ligt are up for the move, with the Dutch center back set to be the new center-piece of Thomas Tuchel’s defense, while Werner is keen for a fresh start in Italy as his goalscoring woes in the Premier League continue. (JPW) What a move this would be for a Chelsea team already loaded with attackers, just the latest sign that no one besides (probably) Kai Havertz and Mason Mount are safe in their status with Thomas Tuchel’s Blues. This time around, Lukaku scored 15 goals in 44 appearances (all competitions – 8 in 26 in the Premier League), bringing his Chelsea career total to 15 goals. His quality is clear for all to see and he would slot in well to the 3-4-2-1 system and is very comfortable on the ball and coming out of the back to start attacks. The focus at Chelsea will likely now be on selling players and they will have to move on a lot of fringe players to offset this huge spending spree. As for De Jong, well, Chelsea’s priority is to sign a center back but with Jorginho and N’Golo Kante coming towards the twilight of their careers, De Jong is a very similar player and would slot in very nicely to safeguard the future of Chelsea’s midfield. It is reported (below) that Chelsea will pay the Norwegian side $12.7 million for Fofana. According to The Athletic, the Everton academy product has told Frank Lampard and the Everton board he wants to move to Chelsea to play in the Champions League and push for a place in the England squad. 31, following the completion of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the USMNT reached the round of 16 for a third straight appearance (2010, 2014). The 50-year-old famously give Los Blancos to three a UEFA Champions League three-peat (2016, 2017, 2018), while also winning La Liga and Copa del Rey twice each.

It’s very good when the player tells us they are not 100 per cent as Skippy was and he played well. James Ward-Prowse sent what looked to be an innocuous free kick into the area but Joel Ward mistimed his effort to head clear. “I feel in good form and I feel fit. “He tried to push himself but he was not 100 per cent. “The first task is progress and we have to say compliments. “We had the control of the game for all of the 90 minutes but we didn’t create many chances in the first half because they were so compact and we tried to create more space in the second half.”

Another good shift from Gil and he gets a big ovation from the crowd. It's a potent front three which should cause Pompey plenty of problems, especially with their renewed confidence. He's a talented player." One more to go for Harry Kane to become Spurs' joint all-time top scorer with Jimmy Greaves. Son Heung-min has opened up on the troubles he has had with his face mask, including his struggles to see the ball during a game. Emerson Royal gets the nod over Djed Spence which won't go down too well with the Spurs fans while Ryan Sessegnon comes in for Ivan Perisic, who with Eric Dier gets a complete rest from the squad and Fraser Forster gets his third start in a Tottenham shirt. In behind it's a big chance for Pape Matar Sarr with his full debut for the club after impressing from the bench in recent games. Tottenham have made a late change to the starting XI with Oliver Skipp replacing Yves Bissouma in the team. He plays a one-two with Sessegnon and curls a beauty into the far right corner of the net. It has been a very lively start to this FA Cup contest in N17, with Portsmouth fans making plenty of noise from the away end. With Spurs next in action against Arsenal in eight days' time, the head coach has a decision to make over players such as Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as they need to ensure they are not victims of a cup shock. Sheffield Wednesday spring shock by putting Newcastle out of FA Cup (The Guardian)

Josh Windass's two goals took League One Sheffield Wednesday to a shock 2-1 victory over Newcastle in the FA Cup third round at Hillsborough.

Howe used the break in play to introduce Kieran Trippier, whose corner was flicked on by Chris Wood and tucked in by Guimarães. And so home supporters sang the blues. Windass was sent away by Michael Smith – a product of Tyneside’s famous Wallsend Boys Club – and curled a lovely finish past the helpless Dubravka. Had VAR been in operation the goal would not have stood. It came after a moment of quality from George Byers earned him some space in the midfield. Moore was a picture of calm, unlike the majority of north Sheffield. He was replaced at the break. The strike was straight at Dawson. The club’s record signing looked as dangerous as he was rusty during his 45 minutes of action. Soon after the break they led. It is a message Eddie Howe ought to have relayed to Newcastle, who began shakily. A night when an old, somewhat unloved but far from unloveable mash of iron and concrete

And those stops proved pivotal as the Owls doubled their lead in the 66th minute, with Windass grabbing his second. Hwang earns FA Cup replay for Wolves in thriller at Liverpool amid ... (The Guardian)

Wolves earned a 2-2 draw at Liverpool in the FA Cup third round but Toti's apparent winner was disallowed for offside.

The goal was as out of the blue as Wolves’s first had been and proved the last act of an entertaining first half. When Jordan Henderson was passed to in came Adama Traoré like a train to take the ball and leave the captain on the turf. Moments later, Traoré hurtled down the right and fired in a low cross that Jiménez was agonisingly close to tapping in. On the touchline, Klopp fixed on a grin but he surely seethed. Towards the end there even was a third comedy of errors when a Liverpool goalmouth scramble after a corner led to Toti putting the ball in the net only for offside to be given, puzzlingly. More penetrative was a Mohamed Salah burst that caused Jonny to upend him outside the area but the Egyptian’s subsequent free-kick sailed over.
