5 Jobs That Didn't Exist 5 Years Ago (TIME)

The pandemic shifted the way people work, live and socialize. In some cases it has led to the creation of new jobs altogether.

The whole idea of influencer marketing is a strategic relationship between the influencer’s brand and the company’s brand, Sawhney says. “It was a space that a lot of us were interested in as investors ourselves, but our clients were coming to us with questions.” Regulatory framework and standards would help to build trust in that space to calm the volatility and help against illegal activity.” “Lately, it’s dwindled down to where I don’t have as much CCO work as I do medic work,” says Schlund, who estimates that compliance officer jobs in 2022 were only about 25% of what they were in 2021. Schlund says he also has to patrol the different so-called bubbles on set, keeping actors apart from crew and other parts of the production staff. In some cases it has led to the creation of new jobs altogether.

Taiwan in Time: Soccer madness in the Japanese era (台北時報)

When Thomas Band set out for Taiwan in 1912, he made sure he brought one item with him: a soccer ball. The 26-year-old British missionary was the captain of his ...

As I peered in wonder out the window, I saw that the university was now called Eternal Sincerity University (slogan: the Taiwan university of the Future, Today!). I hit a button to close the window, and the car suddenly exploded into the air! I was driving my Delorean across a university parking lot in Taoyuan, listening to the news about the Vietnamese students in Taiwan who had been kidnapped and forced to work as prostitutes. Shanghai reporters came to Taiwan to examine the local sports scene, concluding that its weakest points were soccer and basketball. However, after his beloved teacher Lin Mao-sheng (林茂生) “disappeared” in the aftermath of the 228 Incident, he left for China and never returned. In November 1929, the Presbyterian Middle School and Tainan First High launched the Southern Soccer League with Band as president. That year, the all-Japanese Taihoku High School beat out the competition to represent Taiwan, but they lost in the first round. Physical education was not a common subject then, and as principal of Tainan’s Presbyterian Church High School (renamed Chang Jung High School in 1939), he at first had to drag the students from their dorms after school to the field. This also happened in the south, as the crew of a visiting British warship played a friendly match with the Presbyterian students. Post-match brawls were common, and the authorities tacitly allowed them to happen as a way for people to blow off steam as imperialism grew. He believed that soccer was a better team sport than baseball and more conducive to teaching the importance of cooperation, Lin writes. By 1920, the Presbyterian school had two soccer teams, and it was the most popular activity during recess.

It's Time To (Re)Visit San Francisco's Maybeck's, Here's Why (Forbes)

The Marina District favorite, Maybeck's restaurant recently reopened with a new California-inspired menu and talented chef/ owner line-up.

The cocktail and bar program are one of the things we updated when we reopened. We're really excited about what the team is putting together and can't wait for our guests to enjoy these special menus! The current stand out dishes are the Korean Fried Potatoes, the Ricotta Gnudi, the Liberty Duck, and the Local Cod. The desserts are all inspired by American favorites, specifically my love of layer cakes, cheesecakes, crisps, bread puddings and root beer floats. The updated restaurant interiors also feature a crudo bar and soon it will include an all-glass wine shop and private dining room. The private dining room will eventually be a retail wine shop during the day which is something we feel this side of the Marina is currently missing.

When UTC became the standard of time (The Hindu)

These atomic clocks were able to show that Earth's rotational period actually varied ever so slightly on an everyday basis owing to tectonic movements, melting ...

Irrespective of where you are on Earth, the time in that region can be given in terms of UTC. Instead of having it as CUT or TUC, a compromise was reached, and the acronym UTC was born. This meant that UTC had effectively become the successor of GMT, providing for the basis of time worldwide. It was a way to accommodate the differences in timekeeping that arise between atomic time and solar time. The idea for a universal time stemmed from this requirement and it was first conceived late in the 1800s. UTC is not only kept within an exact number of seconds of International Atomic Time (TAI), but is also kept within 0.9 second of solar time or astronomical time, denoted as UT1.

Happy New Rear! Time-Tested Diet And Exercise Tips For Travelers ... (Forbes)

Let's face it, when you travel, usually your diet-and-exercise routine takes a vacation of its own. Here are some of my personal travel fitness trips.

If there’s a wild-mushroom tart on the menu, I’m definitely going to have two bites of it and forego having a piece of bread. I make a point to have a meeting with the Executive Chef, first thing after boarding, and request all kinds of special meals – say, a lowfat ratatouille made with very little oil. Go ahead and order that lobster Thermidor – but you can actually ask that it be made with a minimum of butter and oil. If there’s a Nutella crepe on the menu, you know I am going to fit it into that day’s calorie intake. Breakfast is either a bowl of oatmeal and fruit, or two scrambled eggs (with no butter) and toast and fruit. Have you made a New Year’s resolution to lose some weight and stay in shape?

When is the right time to sell your house? (AsiaOne)

Whether it's buying or selling a house, it's hard to predict when prices will hit an all-time low or reach a new peak. Even with property transaction data, it's ...

Or you just want a newer home, because the current house is getting old and harder to maintain. You shouldn't sell your house just because it's a seller's market and everyone around you is selling. It can be very tempting to sell your house in a seller's market. The bank will charge you an early redemption penalty if you sell your house within this period. Figuring out when is the right time to sell your house is hard. The house may be in a good location. On top of that, the URA master plan doesn't indicate any future developments nearby to support any significant price growth. In a seller's market, you'll have to buy your new home at a high price. You may have run into financial trouble and can't keep up with the mortgage. near the rubbish chute, on a low floor, etc.), if you list it during a seller's market, there's a high chance you can sell it quickly. But this may be more applicable if you treat your house as an investment. After all, these are historical data; they're recorded after the deals have been sealed.

We are at a time of year when booze-induced dread peaks. So I quit ... (The Guardian)

Facing fear and uncertainty without reaching for liquid courage unlocked a new level of confidence in my life.

In that feeling of relief itself (wine won’t cure my husband of disease) and also in undermining my ability to navigate the turmoil that was 2021 while being fully present. But while I knew that reaching for a glass of wine would give the impression of immediate “relief”, I also knew the feeling it promised was deceitful. Not being able to be with my husband while he was in hospital for surgery led to a level of fear I had never known before, that had manifested even as physical pain. Alcohol seems to fit this need with the immediate impact of increasing the body’s production of serotonin and dopamine, the “happy” hormones. I thought the first days of sobriety would be my hardest. I quickly learnt that having a “drink” (soda water with lemon) in hand was enough to stifle unwanted curiosity and avoid empty-hand anxiety.

200 Best Singers of All Time (Rolling Stone)

That kind of deep, empathetic bond between artist and listener is the most elemental connection in music. And you can think of our list of the 200 Greatest ...

And on immortal hits like “Heat Wave,” “Dancing in the Street,” and “Nowhere to Run,” Reeves did it — sang pop hits with deep soul, or made soul records that popped like corn — as well as anyone. Dion had the swagger of a teen Sinatra (“Runaround Sue”), but he also had the heart of a premature old soul (“Abraham, Martin and John”). His happy burble on “The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite,” from the latter, and his steely keen on the former’s closer, “Me in Honey,” tell the story as well as the hits do. An instrument of power, precision, and staggering range, it was the central feature of her debut album, Some Hearts, and hits like “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” “Before He Cheats,” and “Wasted.” Fifteen years and numerous hits later, she’s still singing like she’s got something to prove — 2022’s Denim & Rhinestones has a more aggressive rock edge than some of her past work and boasts some of her most demanding vocal work yet. “A certain reverence for the past, and a steady determination to take her place in the long story she was telling.” —A.M. Nobody can top Morrissey when it comes to flamboyantly melancholy ballads, in the grandeur of “I Know It’s Over,” “Now My Heart Is Full,” or his signature song, “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out.” —R.S. 2013’s “Vivir Mi Vida” — a tropical reinvention of a hit by Algerian star Khaled — found him at the top of his game, while the rugged title track of his 2022 album, Pa’llá Voy, confirms him as one of the most distinctive and expressive vocalists in the Afro-Caribbean spectrum. Throughout her prolific discography, she pushes hard in both directions, as on 2014’s “Brooklyn Baby,” when she plays a coquettish character with her tone of feigned innocence, or 2021’s “White Dress,” on which she reveals all the scratches and imperfections of her airy head voice. His gritty warmth is there in rugged ballads like “Turn the Page,” “Mainstreet,” and “The Famous Final Scene,” but most of all in the 9-minute Live Bullet medley of “Travelin’ Man”/“Beautiful Loser,” where he’s barely in his thirties, but already looking back at a life of blown chances. pop market cemented her status as “The Madonna of the Middle East.” —I.W.
