Five... Boxing Day belters! (Tottenham Hotspur)

It's one of those special days on the football calendar - and we've certainly helped spread a little Spurs festive cheer in recent years on Boxing Day.

Harry needed one goal to topple Alan Shearer's record of 36 in the Premier League in a calendar year - Shearer achieved the feat for Blackburn in 1995 - and took just 22 minutes, heading home Christian Eriksen's cross from close range. Christian Eriksen, Heung-Min Son and Lucas were the beneficiaries of the Academy graduate's creative work down the right flank as we were 3-0 up by half time. Indeed, we forced an incredible 15 corners in the first half, but had to wait until another deadly finisher in our ranks, Jermain Defoe, opened the scoring at the start of the second half via a clever pass from Kyle Naughton. Bale darted in from halfway, rounded goalkeeper Brad Guzan and slotted for 2-0 before two piercing finishes from close range saw us home 4-0. That was Premier League goal number 75 for us, plus 25 for Coventry City and Leeds United. Steffen Iversen converted Chris Armstrong's cross between those goals and Sherwood completed the scoring with another header, this time from Stephen Clemence's corner.

The St Stephen's Day and Boxing Day celebrations also involve several sporting events, including horse races and rugby. It is quite similar to the Black Friday madness in the United States. Though the name suggests that the day might be associated with a sport, it is far from that. What is Boxing Day and how is it celebrated? (AS English)

Ultimately, what we can say for sure is that the holiday has its roots in the giving of gifts to those less fortunate. Until 2004 when the practice was banned, it was still common for hunters in the UK to gather en masse for a large-scale Fox Hunt. With that in mind, when the 26th rolled around it was seen as an opportunity for the wealthy to show appreciation to those who had worked tirelessly during the holiday season and of course, throughout the year. What we can say, is that some theories behind the use of the word “Boxing” seem to suggest that it came from Christmas gifts, while others cite charity drives and some even reference a nautical tradition. Whether it was extravagant dinners with geese, turkey and other delicacies exquisitely prepared by kitchen staff, or massive spending on gifts, the point is that the entire British class structure worked fervently, to make the holiday season as perfect as it could be for the elites of the time. Once a day on which the upper class of British society gave gifts to their staff, it has now become one of the biggest shopping holidays on the calendar.

The highest-scoring Boxing Days in Premier League history (90min)

The Premier League marks its return from a winter hiatus with a healthy set of fixtures on every English football fan's favourite day on the calendar.

That's 4.6 goals a game! What more do you want from a festive fixture? Although, Wigan's 4-3 victory over Man City was a vintage festive classic. What a barrel of laughs this was: six games, 28 goals. Since 2000, though, Boxing Day has been where it's at in regards to Premier League football. It wasn't all that much better two years later, to be honest, but there was one less game. 2014 (27 goals) 2001 (24 goals) 2015 (23 goals) 2016 (21 goals) Festive football has been entrenched in British culture for decades. 2010 (20 goals)

Big spenders set to hit Boxing Day sales (South Coast Register)

Despite inflation and cost of living pressures squeezing budgets, the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) forecasted retail sales would remain strong.

The Nation Retail Association predicted a $3 billion spend in Boxing Day sales alone across Australia. The predicted spend looks to be a 7.9 per cent increase on last year's post-Christmas shopping which takes in the period from December 26 to January 15. Big spenders are expected to hit the Boxing Day sales with force as retailers prepare for a predicted $23.5 billion splurge across Australia.

The Boxing Day Test is a seasonal rite, an occasion not easily ... (The Age)

Over the past week the MCG pitch has endured the kind of relentless attention that only Harry and Meghan could understand.

There is plenty of time for endless discussion about weather, team selections and – most importantly – the pitch. The At the very least, let us hope that play on Boxing Day is followed by one more day, then another and – wouldn’t it be luvverly? He signs the money! This Test is an event: an occasion; a seasonal rite dating back to 1950, when the game (against England) actually started on December 22 and included a two-day break for Christmas. With a mere three runs – one boundary – needed for a miraculous local triumph, I was distracted by the sight of a deputy editor, a distinguished journalist who’d covered the Falklands War, sitting on the floor, head in hands, moaning. The number of runs required diminished in inverse proportion to the Englishmen’s pulse rate. I recall an extraordinary number of Age staff crammed into the office of the sports editor. Australia, meanwhile, required 37 more runs – a tall order, given that one of the batsmen, Jeff Thomson, was a bowler. But the best was still to come. But what unfolds at the MCG today is often just the start of something. The final day of the 1982 Boxing Day Test began with England needing a solitary wicket for victory.

Everything you need to know about the Boots Boxing Day 2022 sale (Manchester Evening News)

Our ex-Boots employee has spilled all the tips and tricks for shopping the Boots Boxing Day sales.

Boots have not - and are unlikely to - reveal when the 70 per cent off sale will launch, but we can expect it to be at the end of January based on previous years. Simply take the item and your receipt and you’ll be offered a refund or replacement. In 2022, the sale launched in March. Shoppers will often find Christmas gifts heavily reduced as a result of damaged boxes or a product missing - but you can usually salvage a lot of the contents to create hampers or use as stocking fillers, too. This is a very low-key sale in-store only, and usually runs around the fourth weekend in January. If you have any physical coupons, too, bring them along and the checkout assistants will be happy to help you work out which ones to use. A lot of stores will use an end aisle or a small section of the store for clearance products which are often discontinued, partially damaged or nearing their expiry date. These will automatically give you the best deals and most points when you scan them at the till. First of all, you should visit your local stores around an hour before closing on Christmas Eve to give you an idea of what will be in stock and reduced on Boxing Day. Remember, it’s not a bargain if you weren’t planning on buying it in the first place. Make sure you’ve downloaded the Boots app and loaded all of your offers to your card. Be sure to check with your local store before you head out.

"The children in the Northwest region have gone through very disturbing times due to insecurity, and once displaced, you bear with me, you already have some psychological instability,” he told VOA via a messaging app from Bamenda, capital of the Northwest region. "Children that have been displaced are living in very deplorable situations,” Ndi said. Cameroon is marking Boxing Day, the day after Christmas when gifts are traditionally given to the poor, with a nationwide gift drive for internally displaced children. “We thought it necessary that we could seek assistance and donations from some of our elite and then we get to these children so that some that didn't have anything to eat at all, can have something to eat.

Better-than-expected numbers after 2021's Covid-hit Christmas remain well below pre-pandemic levels.

Having said that, retailers can take confidence knowing shoppers still plan to make the most of the deals and discounts on offer.” “While I’m heartened to see that the West End’s recovery has continued during a busy festive season, the district would have performed much better if public transport was running as normal. In central London, footfall more than doubled on last year – up 139%, but was down 22% on 2019. Some shops including Home Bargains and Poundland remained shut. Boxing Day shoppers spent record-high of $100 million on sales (Stuff.co.nz)

Shoppers were out in force for the sales, but Black Friday shopping outpaced that of Boxing Day for the second year in a row.

“There were a lot of people hitting the shops yesterday and buying things online. This trend reinforces previous data suggesting that main metro areas are seeing a faster pull-back in spending. It was up 15% in Southland and 13% in Marlborough, while the total regional spend declined by 3.2% in Wellington. Olsen said Boxing Day was not the spending bonanza it once was, with spending on Black Friday a month earlier closer to $150m, and spending in the lead up to Christmas topping $200m on peak spending days. ”In general, spending in Auckland and Wellington looks considerably softer than the national average, with lower spending compared to a year ago in both areas for the three weeks leading up to Christmas. “A number of regional areas, particularly in the South Island, are seeing stronger spending than the national average, with a better summer than last year as international tourism has fired back up and visitor numbers recover.” Worldline NZ chief sales officer Bruce Proffit said Black Friday spending exceeded that of Boxing Day sales, but spending on both days remained below that of the days immediately prior to Christmas. This was the second year in a row that spending on Black Friday outpaced that of Boxing Day sales. The average transaction size in the lead up to Christmas was $56.76, down 2.8% on last year. Annual spending growth on Boxing Day was highest on the West Coast, up 33% on last year. Compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, spending on Boxing Day was up 3.1%. Kiwis rang $100.5 million through tills around the country on Boxing Day – a 2.6% increase on spending recorded during the sales day last year.

New Zealanders break record, spend $100m on Boxing Day sales (RNZ)

While Boxing Day spending reached record heights, it was overshadowed by the amount spent in the lead-up to Christmas.

"There's huge customer demand for deals in that month or so out from Christmas. This year it was spread out over two days - so the Friday and the Saturday, given that Christmas was on the Sunday - but both those days were very large in terms of Kiwis spending." Christmas Eve though, for the last 30 years has been twice as big as the next day and we don't see that trend changing at all." "It's hard to say as well because a lot of retailers have been stretching out Black Friday, some retailers are doing the whole month of November and things like that, so just Black Friday as a day sale is not quite a thing anymore." "There has been some suggestion that there's a bit of buyers' fatigue, that the sales seem to continue for so long that when it comes to Boxing Day, people have already got the deals that they were chasing." "It certainly announces the start of the sale period, and what we tend to see now is that the sales start at Black Friday and don't seem to stop until Christmas.
