When he returned to Liverpool, his form tailed off, and while this may partly be down to the devastation of losing in the showpiece (also to Senegal), fatigue was arguably the biggest factor. The unique nature of the season could make Salah, last season's Golden Boot winner, and Haaland, almost certainly his successor, more dangerous than ever. Midway through the 2021/22 campaign, he was called up to represent his country at the Africa Cup of Nations, progressing all the way to the final. There were very few who believed that Haaland's move to Manchester City could fail, but one of the few concerns raised was his injury record.
