'It Rained Oil': Remembering the Explosive 1958 Hancock Refinery ... (KCET)

On May 22, 1958, a series of oil spills and explosions ignited the Hancock Oil Refinery in Signal Hill, burning for two days and sending thick plumes of ...

I can still tell by the stench in the afternoon air when a valve in a refinery's tangle of pipes and towers has failed. Hancock wasn't the first refinery fire on the hill. The bravery of the firefighters who walked into the refinery's inferno is acknowledged by the press and Hancock company officials. Then the fire is finally out, and the aftermath begins. Daylight and the fire burns as fiercely as yesterday, but efforts to drain tanks around the fire should deny it new fuel. The fire is even changing the weather. At the foot of the hill is a Navy airbase and the Long Beach airport. Nightfall makes the fire even more terrible — a hell of smoke and flames, easily seen from my front yard when the veil of black smoke shifts. If the temperature of the tank goes above 200 degrees, the contents will boil out as a toxic cloud that will drift over east Long Beach and into Orange County. The fire is uncontrollable. But the river of fire escapes and widens as it flows, following the contours of the hillside toward the refinery's parking lot and a natural gas storage facility. A "white mist" rises from an 80,000-gallon tank of partially refined oil at the southwest corner of the Hancock refinery.

Boulder mobile home fire likely related to furnace issues (The Daily Camera)

A mobile home fire in Boulder Meadows on Sunday was likely caused by a problem with the structure's furnace and heating system, officials said.

“Furnaces and HVAC systems, if not properly maintained and updated, can become fire hazards,” the release read. But “based on interviews and aspects of the investigation that the team could complete, the home’s heating system is the most likely cause.” The residents of the home were able to evacuate, and there were no injuries to residents or firefighters.

A wildfire that started as a structure fire in Sunshine Canyon has forced evacuations in the Boulder County foothills.

A separate set of crews were dealing with the original structure fire, but according to scanner traffic that fire had been contained to only one home and was under control.
