How a retired Sergio Agüero became Argentina's 27th-man at the ... (The Athletic)

The game carried on, as it does whenever great players retire. Barcelona would build its line around another great striker in Robert Lewandowski. Argentina ...

And, with Messi as the obvious centerpiece of the celebration, there was no more worthy support to carry soccer’s singular talent than the once-again roommate. At that point, whatever “weird situation” there had been at the start of the tournament had passed and Agüero’s reintegration was completed when he was asked to once again be Messi’s roommate and ensure their iconic talisman was in the right frame of mind ahead of Sunday’s final. [In a Twitch stream](https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=07vFqwrz5iA) during this World Cup, the retired striker learned that Messi had opted to have his own space rather than take in another roommate for the tournament. After Argentina’s win over Croatia in the semifinal, Messi gave Agüero his match shorts, which Agüero passed along to his son. Though Messi and Ángel Di María are among the nation’s most notable players, there was still a steep learning curve for the likes of Martínez, Álvarez and Enzo Fernández. After the Manchester City man’s interplay with Messi bore a less cagey match in the final third, he became the better option to lead the line for Argentina. “Today the game was not for Lautaro,” he said in ESPN’s studio coverage. While the Inter Milan striker started the ensuing win over Mexico, he was replaced by Álvarez for the Group C finale against Poland. I spoke with Chiqui (Tapia, Argentina Football Association president) and I was clear with him about my goal to enjoy my time,” Agüero told ESPN. Things got off to a rocky start for Agüero in Qatar, though. It’s a difficult role to embrace, but this went beyond playing the devil’s advocate; Agüero knew, better than most, why Argentina fell against perceived inferior opposition. He had just been a prized signing for FC Barcelona, but his impact was limited to just a handful of matches following a storied spell at Manchester City.

John Terry mocks Aguero as former Argentina star joins in World ... (beIN SPORTS USA)

John Terry famously pulled on the Chelsea kit to join in the 2012 Champions League final celebrations, despite being suspended for the game.

The skipper had been absent from that game due to suspension, but his status and contribution through the campaign meant he had a right to be involved when it came to accepting the silverware. It was the sight of him in a shirt but non-matching shorts and socks, and white trainers, that drew the attention of former Chelsea and England captain Terry, who knows a thing or two about turning out in full kit after playing no part in a game. He scored 41 goals for his country before having to hang up his boots, but Aguero was out on the pitch with Lionel Messi and a host of former team-mates, in the thick of the partying players, after Sunday's dramatic final against France.

During a live session on Instagram, the former Argentina and Manchester City striker was heard making a filthy remark about the Real Madrid player.

On Sunday, Argentina beat France 4-2 in the penalty shootout to win its first World Cup since 1986, when Diego Maradona won it for the La Albiceleste. He was seen celebrating the win with Argentina’s World Cup-winning team. Aguero, 34, had to end his career in December 2021 after cardiologists found a cardiac arrhythmia in his heart.

'I did it first!' - John Terry reacts to retired Aguero donning Argentina ... (Goal.com)

Chelsea and England legend John Terry jokingly claimed Sergio Aguero imitated him by joining Argentina's World Cup celebrations in full kit.

He would have likely been involved for La Albiceleste in his final World Cup, had it not been for the sudden retirement. As Argentina climbed atop the footballing mountain once more, one of the greatest footballers to hail from the country in Aguero joined the celebrations after full-time. Terry made light of the circumstances, comparing Aguero's situation to his own when Chelsea won the Champions League in 2012.
