"I’m sure if he was here he’d have enjoyed so much and been the first one on the pitch," Scaloni said. A player and person who gives so much to his teammates." "It’s such a huge pleasure for us to coach him and his teammates. Everyone is pulling in the same direction for their country. He’s more than entitled to decide if he wants to keep playing for Argentina or not, or what he wants to do with his career. After scoring twice in the dramatic win over France on penalties, Messi said he would not retire from international football, but before the final he insisted this will be his fifth and final World Cup.

What lessons can 2026 World Cup learn from 2022 tournament? (Los Angeles Times)

Now that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is over, the focus turns to 2026 and the World Cup's return to North America. What are the logistical challenges that ...

What is the legacy of this World Cup and how are we changing the game? Still, Cone believes if this next World Cup comes and goes and nothing changes, it will be a costly missed opportunity, regardless of the financial constraints. The new model will likely narrow the list of countries able to bid on future World Cups to wealthy nations such as the United States or authoritarian ones such as Russia, China and Saudi Arabia, Rothenberg said. The host cities are going to have the responsibility to operate the event and provide all the public services, and [FIFA is] providing very limited revenue opportunities for the host cities. As a result, the 1994 tournament, still the best-attended World Cup ever, produced a surplus of about $50 million, more than double original projections. And then also participate in the ticket revenue,” Rothenberg said. FIFA has wrested control of much of the marketing and organization of the event away from its local partners, meaning FIFA will reap most of the profits while leaving the costs to local organizers. Qatar had to build seven of the eight stadiums and its Metro system from scratch and spent billions more to upgrade its international airport. As a result, no World Cup will ever again produce the kind of domestic surplus the 1994 U.S. So I took that approach with Qatar, taking a look around and seeing how they’re doing it, comparing it to how I think things may work in the U.S.,” said Cone, who spent 2½ weeks in Qatar during the World Cup. But it’s the differences more than the similarities that stand out when comparing the 2022 World Cup with the 2026 tournament. It was great theater, a bare-knuckle brawl that played out over 120 minutes and four rounds of penalty kicks before Argentina was declared the victor after a game that ended in a 3-3 draw.

2026 World Cup: What you need to know as focus shifts to Canada ... (Sportsnet.ca)

That's where an invite to the 2024 Copa América to battle South America's elite would be massively beneficial. However, there should be gaps in the calendar. In the meantime, Canada finishes its Concacaf Nations League group stage action in March against Honduras and Curacao. Topping the group means progression to the semifinals against the likes of Mexico and the U.S. will host every single match from the quarterfinals onwards, with Canada and Mexico receiving 10 games each. It was the first city announced by FIFA, which may not be a coincidence. There will be six playoff teams in total: every confederation has one team, with Concacaf receiving two, while UEFA is the only confederation that will solely have automatic spots in its qualifying campaign. FIFA hasn't determined which cities will host specific matches, like the final. The format for determining the two playoff winners is not yet official. For starters, it means 16 teams wouldn't be eliminated after playing two matches. Two are Canadian, 11 are in the U.S., and three are in Mexico. Canada, the United States and Mexico will co-host the men's World Cup in 2026, which will be a tournament of firsts.

They may not have qualified for a World Cup before but the Eagles went close to reaching Qatar with a squad that should only get better over the coming years. They did however give the Dutch and Turkey all sorts of problems in a difficult group and you would expect them to be one of the 16 (!!!) best teams in Europe who will be given a spot at the tournament. Qatar was a step too far for the Luis Suarezes and Diego Godins, the frustration for Uruguay might be that Diego Alonso, who had seemed to be the man ready to usher in the new generation, persevered with them for too long in this tournament, on occasion to the detriment of Darwin Nunez and company. Eventually, the likes of Josko Gvardiol and Luka Sucic will be ready for the step up though, the former showed in Qatar that he already was some time ago. Thibaut Courtois could still be one of the world's top goalkeepers and though the next generation will surely not be as prized around Europe as those who came before them, there is promising young talent in Jeremy Doku, Amadou Onana and Charles De Ketelaere. It might seem perverse to put a team who did not qualify for Qatar over some of the tournament's great luminaries but the reigning world champions at the Under-20 level have an extremely talented young squad, most notably Andriy Lunin, Mykhaylo Mudryk and Illya Zabarnyi. It is easy to envisage the Morocco of 2026 being rather like Croatia of 2022, experienced operators who are hellish to beat even if they do not score that many goals. This nation will doubtless be a contender in the next World Cup but may not go all the way. It is of course way, way, way too early to think about who might be lifting the trophy in a stadium to be confirmed on a date to be confirmed, but that has not stopped us. Almost all of England's best players in Qatar ought to be greatly improved by 2026 and there is a tempting narrative whereby the pain of Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup are the growing pains any great side must go through before they reach the summit. He showed in Qatar that that is still a reasonable prospect but he will need to find a more conducive environment to fulfill that potential than Barcelona. However, there is certainly work to be done before 2026 if they are to break the streak of group-stage eliminations, starting with a defensive production line that has dried up over recent years.
