If you needed further indication that Meta's pursuit of the metaverse is moving in the wrong direction, look no further than this latest development.

VR can bring value to most of the people in the world, and no company is better positioned to do it than Meta. I wearied of the fight and have my own startup to run, but the fight is still winnable! He goes on to say that while maybe he could have done even more himself and been even more invested in his role at Meta, he often didn’t feel like he was being listened to, or it took years to implement his advice. His GPU metaphor is that Meta has all this power at their disposal, but they’re only using a small portion of it. Gaming industry legend John Carmack has quit his advisory role at Meta, and posted a lengthy letter on his way out that is far from your typical “it was so nice working with everyone!” fluff you normally see in the industry. We have a ridiculous amount of people and resources, but we constantly self-sabotage and squander effort.

Citing Inefficiencies, John Carmack Quits Meta (Thurrott.com)

Legendary programmer John Carmack announced last night that he has quit Meta after struggling to deal with the company's inefficiencies for 8 years.

But “there is plenty of room for improvement,” he says. But he left the firm, now named Meta, in 2019 and became a “consulting CTO” so that he could spend 80 percent of his time on AI. If you know anything about Carmack, that last bit will make lots of sense: this is the man who wrung ungodly graphics performance out of mediocre PC hardware, catapulting the platform into a lucrative new category.

VR can bring value to most of the people in the world, and no company is better positioned to do it than Meta. I think my influence at the margins has been positive, but it has never been a prime mover. A good fraction of the things I complain about eventually turn my way after a year or two passes and evidence piles up, but I have never been able to kill stupid things before they cause damage, or set a direction and have a team actually stick to it. Speaking metaphorically, Carmack stated it was "the personal pain of seeing a 5% GPU utilization number in production" that frustrated him the most. John Carmack is perhaps most famous for developing groundbreaking games in the 1990s, including Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Doom 2, and Quake. Carmack thinks that Meta "is operating at half the effectiveness that would make [him] happy."
