David Beckham Is the World Cup's Missing Mouthpiece (The New York Times)

DOHA, Qatar — In the early days of the World Cup, with the group stage underway and the world's eyes locked on Qatar, the host of soccer's biggest ...

A day later, Lycett revealed that the destruction of the money had been a stunt and that the money had instead been donated to L.G.B.T.Q. Beckham, who left halfway through the tournament before returning to Qatar for the closing stages, has been provided with more lavish accommodations than other players; he stays at the Mandarin Oriental hotel, while the others have been staying in apartment-style rooms at a Hilton on the other side of the city. All but the most essential staff were cleared from the room and asked to wait in a corridor. Beckham’s relationship with Qatar has damaged his reputation in Britain, particularly within the gay community, which until his reported $150 million agreement had seen the former soccer player as a champion of L.G.B.T.Q. At one pre-World Cup event held at one of the tournament’s eight stadiums, for example, Qatar’s pitchmen were called to record content for one of its signature campaigns. But Beckham and his team balked at the idea, and when Neville’s interview was broadcast, Beckham’s unwillingness to talk about Qatar was noted once again. In London, for example, months before the World Cup, tournament officials thought it would be a good idea to promote the work of the female Qatari artist behind the tournament’s official posters at a special event at the Design Museum. In their view, Beckham, by not speaking up and by avoiding questioning by the media, was wielding his influence in ways that were at times counterproductive. Qatar has been assailed over its human rights record, its laws criminalizing homosexuality and the treatment of migrant workers from some of the poorest corners of the earth recruited to build the World Cup. Now, the time had come to roll out its biggest signing, the one star in its arsenal in a league of his own: David Beckham. Here’s a primer to the But it also has produced a strange reality in which one of the world’s most recognizable celebrities is at once everywhere but also nowhere.

Football, the most popular sport globally, has a genuine ability to bring people together and make a real contribution to communities,” Beckham’s spokesperson added. A report from Human Rights Watch (HRW) published in October documented alleged cases of beatings and sexual harassment while in detention. “David has been involved in a number of World Cups and other major international tournaments both as a player and an ambassador and he has always believed that sport has the power to be a force for good in the world. “We understand that there are different and strongly held views about engagement in the Middle East but see it as positive that debate about the key issues has been stimulated directly by the first World Cup being held in the region,” Beckham’s spokesperson told CNN via a statement Friday. [ Joe Lycett ](https://cnn.com/2022/11/20/football/david-beckham-joe-lycett-world-cup-spt-intl/index.html)called on Beckham to step down from his role fronting the tournament due to Qatar’s human rights record, particularly its stance on homosexuality, which is illegal in the Gulf state, and said he that he would shred £10,000 ($11,800) if he did not receive a response from the football star. He also interviewed Dr Nasser Mohamed, the first openly gay Qatari. Lycett's stunt involved him issuing an ultimatum to Beckham, claiming he would shred £10,000 of his own money if Beckham didn't step away from his deal before the tournament's opening ceremony. Then, Lycett explained in a subsequent video that he "never expected" to hear from Beckham before the deadline he had set, and that the money that came out of the shredder was fake – further stressing that he would "never be so irresponsible" as to destroy real money, particularly during a cost-of-living crisis. He added that he performed the stunt because he wanted to "get people talking" about the situation. The programme showed how Lycett had arranged for the shredder to be blocked off inside and refitted with a chute which dispensed shredded paper that looked like real money, to create the illusion. In full, the statement reads: "David has been involved in a number of World Cups and other major international tournaments both as a player and an ambassador and he has always believed that sport has the power to be a force for good in the world.

David Beckham breaks silence on Joe Lycett's money-shredding stunt (Sky News)

David Beckham has broken his silence over his controversial multimillion-pound World Cup deal with Qatar after heavy criticism from the comedian Joe Lycett.

The physician and activist, who said LGBTQ+ issues in Qatar were "life-threatening", claimed he was blocked by Beckham's Instagram account after he "tagged him" in a post to say "this is what is happening" in relation to Qatar's anti-LGBTQ+ stance. "We understand that there are different and strongly held views about engagement in the Middle East but see it as positive that debate about the key issues has been stimulated directly by the first World Cup being held in the region. Lycett revealed he had received the "exclusive statement" on Twitter before the programme, adding: "As far as we are aware this is the only statement he or his team have given to any outlet regarding his involvement in Qatar. "David has been involved in a number of World Cups and other major international tournaments both as a player and an ambassador and he's always believed that sport has the power to be a force for good in the world," it said. In a nod to the widespread condemnation over Beckham's role as ambassador to Qatar, for which he was rumoured to have been paid up to £150m, his team said he understands there are "different and strongly held views about engagement in the Middle East". The former England footballer's spokesman said he saw it as positive that debate about "key issues" has been stimulated by the contest being held in the country.

His face can be seen in various locations on billboards around Qatar and he has popped up throughout the tournament but, according to [The New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/16/sports/soccer/world-cup-david-beckham.html), bosses are 'exasperated' over his reluctance to face questions on awkward issues. Beckham was paid a mammoth sum to front up the region's first-ever major football tournament but criticism has still been fierce during the course of the tournament. Qatari chiefs were angered even further earlier this year when Beckham was visited by Neville in the Middle East.
